    3. Hello to all........ I'm still searching for my ggg grandmother, Catherine Clary. She was born abt. 1825 in Dublin, Ireland. She immigrated to the U.S. bef. 19 August 1849 - her marriage date to my ggg grandfather, Timothy Bow(e) in New Jersey. I haven't found her on any passenger lists and I don't know her religion. My g grandparent's were married in a Methodist Church in Bridgeton, Cumberland County, NJ in 1897. I would appreciate any help in searching the Clary's from Dublin. Barbara in Wilmington, NC

    3. Matheson's Special Report on Surnames based on births registered in Ireland in 1890 gives a distribution of surnames and can be a start when looking for a family. For KEARNEY it says there were 147 registered in Ireland of which 50 in Leinster province, 31 in Munster, 45 in Ulster and 21 in Connaught. Name found all over Ireland but chiefly in Dublin, Cork and Antrim. Hope this is of some help. 3. Peter, Have you looked at Ithaca, NY records, city directories, history, etc., to see if there were certain times/reasons Irish immigrants came to that place? (For example, many Irish went to Chicago around 1850 for jobs constructing a (Sag) canal.) The local historical society might be a source of information. If you can find influx(es) of immigrants maybe you can find Kearneys arriving in Ithaca and thereby begin to narrow your search. As to searching for Kearneys only in Ireland, it looks as tho they are/were everywhere in similar numbers, and your given name (John) is the most common in Ireland. That middle name, Douglas, is intriguing...could be a surname... Good luck to you! 1. [IRL-DUBLIN] BROWNE and NOLAN
    2. Denise Thompson
    3. Hello Listers, I am searching for information relating to the founders of the publishing company BROWNE and NOLAN. In 1873 Browne and Nolan, steam-press printers, paper merchants and manufacturing stationers were at 24 Nassau Street. They were also described as Paper Manufacturers and Dealers. My ancestor Anne THOMPSON, nee BROWNE, is possibly the Annie Thompson who witnessed the marriage of Michael NOLAN to Harriet Sybilla PARKER in Dublin on 27 June 1873. Two of Anne's THOMPSON sons married two of Harriet Parker's sisters, so the relationship between the Thompsons and Parkers is established. I am nevertheless interested in finding a possible link between her and the Browne family of Browne and Nolan. Similarly I wonder whether Michael Nolan was from the firm. thank you and regards from Denise Thompson, Sydney, Australia

    3. Mount Jerome Cemetery is still fully operational and one of the largest and busiest here in Dublin. The Massey family are the owners now. If phoning, the International dialing code for the Republic of Ireland is 353 not 44 which is for England if memory serves. The numbers to dial direct are 00-353-1-4971269. 1. [IRL-DUBLIN] SMYTH/SMITH also TANCRED and TIERNEY
    2. Wendy Lewis
    3. I have just joined this list and this is my first posting, so I hope that someone might be able to help me. I have been trying to help my American second cousin, Joe, to trace his family and we have recently discovered that his great-great-grandfather, Patrick SMYTH (also known as SMITH) was born in Dublin. c1831. His wife was Rosanna TANCRED , also born in Dublin c1833, and I believe that they must have married in Ireland before travelling to Manchester, where Joe's great-grandfather, Edward SMYTH (aka Smith) was born in 1853. Patrick was described as a Clothes Dealer or Tailor. We have discovered from the English Census Returns from 1861 onwards that the family were variously known as Smyth or Smith and that Edward had five sisters and brothers - Mary, born in Dublin c1852 (who married Thomas TIERNEY in Manchester); Thomas born in Dublin c1859; John born in Manchester c1860 (who may have died young); Julia Ann born in Dublin c1864 and Elizabeth born in Manchester c1869. If anyone happens to be researching this Smyth/Smith family, I would love to hear from you. And if anyone knows anything about Rosanna's Tancred family, or Thomas Tierney (whom we believe was also born in Ireland c1853) and his family, this would be very helpful too. We would especially love to have details of Patrick's and Rosanna's birth and their marriage, but I have no idea how to go about obtaining this information. With many thanks to anyone who can help. Wendy Lewis Nottingham

    3. interesting that you mention his extreme deafness. In NZ it has been found that a high proportion of prisoners have a hearing loss to some extent. 3. Hello Shirley, Reasonably sure, a book it mentions he was sentenced to go to Bermuda but I understand the same ship went to both areas. The dates fit perfectly. I am hoping that any background details will mention his extreme deafness as it does in the other sources I have. The trial date on the transportation index gives the same month and year for the Thomas Beckham (murderer) as 9th July 1850 , same crime robbery, same sentence 15 years transportation, age 40 , which makes him 57 ish when the murder happened, at that time his ages was given as 50 to 60 or 61 in one report. All just hints of the same person, no definite answer.
