He was born at Linen Hall Place, Dublin on 27 September 1904. The family moved to Oliver Bond House on Bridgefoot Street. Francis married Mary Margaret REDDY and they had three children. I believe Francis had an older brother called Patrick and two sisters, one of which was called Nellie - she went on to marry a man called Birch (?) and they ran a fish and chip shop in Ripon, UK. Francis' other sister may have married someone called Dalton, because my dad remembers cousins called Dalton. The father of Francis William CARROLL had the nickname Dancer. If you think they may be in a Church of Ireland graveyard have a look at www.ireland.anglican.org/library/ They may be able to tell you which churches were in the Newry area. The town of that name is in Northern Ireland. I am trying to find the last resting place of 2 of my ancestors. However I am not having much success in locating that place. James Henry Minty Harman - died 16 Nov 1894 Florence Elizabeth Harman - died 9 Jan 1895 Their father was a soldier with the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry stationed in Ireland at the time. Both death certificates are issued as District Newry No 1. Can anyone please point me in the direction as to where I may be able to locate the grave site records? I have tried writing to a couple of the Churches of Ireland, but obviously the requests fell into the "too hard basket". Being in Sydney it is hard to locate and access the relevant records. Any help would be appreciated Best Regards Michael

It's great to know someone else who is tracing the Dublin Smith line. We may not be tracing the same one, but at least it's a start! Simone Wendy Lewis <wendy.linedancer@btinternet.com> wrote: Hi everyone I joined this list a couple of weeks ago, knowing nothing at all about tracing Irish ancestry. I received no response to my first posting, which is fair enough, as presumably no one is tracing the SMYTH/SMITH, TANCRED AND TIERNEY families in Dublin in which I am interested. But I also asked how I could go about obtaining information on a couple of births in Dublin (c1831/1833) and a marriage c1850. I have since located the genfindit site:- http://genfindit.com/ireland.htm But this only seems to relate to Civil Registration from 1864 and Protestant marriages from 1845 (I have no idea whether or not they were Protestants) So, please, is there any way I can trace the above-mentioned births and marriage in Dublin? As I have no idea how to go about obtaining this information, any help will be much appreciated. Many thanks. Hello Wendy I must have missed your first request I'm also trying to trace a Smith family in Dublin My Great Grandfather was George Hill Smith born in Dublin in 1833. He was the 7th of 10 children of George Smith and Elizabeth Lee. George Smith was a government employee with a residence reported to be in Dublin Castle George Hill was reported to have been born in Dublin Castle. He became a Barrister and then a Judge I have some records (scrap books) kept by George Hill Smith from about 1900 till his death in 1926. Mainly about his family, friends and work Also a small Scripture Text book which I believe was kept his`wife which gives birth dates`of his` children and other people George Hill Smith married Eliza Graham in Muff Co Donegal in 1858. He moved to Armagh around 1865 and then to Belfast about 1880. The scrap books and the book of birth dates helped a lot in my research. I have been able to find some of the birth records for his children using the Registrations indexes. The IGI has a few records (early 1860's only). I have found a few people here. However to get BMD certificates to need to know the names, the parents names, dates and places. You can download order forms from the GRO Ireland web site. The National Archives in Dublin is also another place you need to contact/visit. Census records (1901 and 1911) and Wills are available here along with many other records. The National Library in Dublin is also another source for records. If you know where people lived then you need to look at the Parish Records. A lot of these are held by the Representative Church Body in Dublin I visited there a couple oy years ago and they were very helpful in explaining which records were available, which ones had been lost, etc. Then the plod work. The Griffiths Valuation and the Tithe Applotment records. These generally tell you heads of households and land ownership and tenancy. To use them effectively yuou really need to have some idea of where people lived I hope these notes help but if you have any questions`please ask Good luck with the Smith's Bill ----- Original Message ----- From: "Wendy Lewis" <wendy.linedancer@btinternet.com> To: <IRL-DUBLIN@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, November 28, 2006 11:24 AM Subject: [IRL-DUBLIN] Obtaining birth/marriage information > > I received no response to my first posting, which is fair enough, as > presumably no one is tracing the SMYTH/SMITH, TANCRED AND TIERNEY families > in Dublin in which I am interested. Wendy: Contact the records in Dublin-do not remember what they are called. This is where I found the will of a great uncle who died in 1916. There may not be any records except thru the churches. My g grandparents married in 1857 in Belfast and they had a marriage certificate. Wendy, Civil Registration began on the dates you stated in your email. It was not mandatory to report births prior to these dates. For information prior to that you would need to know the church of baptism. Do you have any addresses or know where in Dublin? ie Dublin South, etc. Gail --- Wendy Lewis <wendy.linedancer@btinternet.com> wrote: > Hi everyone > > I joined this list a couple of weeks ago, knowing > nothing at all about > tracing Irish ancestry. > > I received no response to my first posting, which is > fair enough, as > presumably no one is tracing the SMYTH/SMITH, > TANCRED AND TIERNEY families > in Dublin in which I am interested. Hello Ted, I guess you could start by obtaining the marriage certificate from Ireland. This should tell you the name of Mary's father and his occupation. It will also state where she was living at the time of her marriage and her occupation. It may also state her exact age. You are lucky, the 1901 Census will be online in the near future and you may find her living with her family. Your nearest LDS FHLibrary should be able to help you search the Irish Civil Registration Index films for the marriage. If you let me know where you live in Australia, I may be able to help. Hi Listers I have the following from military records and I'm anxious to find out more about Mary Murray William Fowler, a soldier serving with the 21st Lancers in Dublin married Mary Murray 22nd July 1901. The officiating minister or Registrar was J Hazelthwaite and there were two witnesses I and M Maguire. Mary had two children in Dublin before accompanying William back to England in 1904. They had a long and happy marriage with four more children but the remaining grandchildren have no knowledge of where Mary came from. I am hoping someone on this list may be able to advise me or (and stranger things happen all the time) someone will leap forward and claim her as a long lost great aunt. Wish you all well Ted Fowler Australia

Hi Peter, I will write you off list. I would like to know what you have already done to find your family. I consult with real estate and investment companies to find property owners who have moved away, sometimes to other countries. I've also written two books that relate to this - Forensic Genealogy and DNA & Genealogy (_www.forensicgenealogy.info_ (http://www.forensicgenealogy.info) ). If you have not already tried DNA as a means of finding your family, you should. There are DNA projects going on that you could join to find matches. I know of other people in similiar situations to yours who have been successful in finding family this way. There is no guarantee of a DNA match, but as more people get tested, your chances improve.
