    3. Hi Janet, Doing further research on that name, it would appear it was originally McCrossan and other variants. Origin Leinster, where anciently they resided in the Ballymacrossan area, but are now situated mainly on the border of Leix and Offaly. 1. [IRL-DUBLIN] Canavan family
    2. Norman Archibald
    3. Dear Listers, This is my 1st. posting to the list which I hope will be the beginning of a fruitful relationship. My great Grandfather, John CANAVAN, occupation, "painter" ( house painter ) left Dublin arriving in Victoria, Australia, aboard the sailing ship, " Atalanta" on the 17th. of April, 1867. John`s parent`s names were, Michael CANAVAN, occupation, "painter" and Catherine MULVANY or MULVANNEY. I have a copy of a letter that was written to John from his father in Ireland, dated May 24th. 1868 in which Michael ( my great great grandfather ) makes mention of a Catherine and a Jemmy who may have been related to John and people who may have been members of the community in which the CANAVAN`s lived. There was a "young" DERONZY, Pat SLATTERY, Dan BYRNE, Tom O`FLYNN, Old NUGENT, Dick CLARK, John HOAD, Richard FORKINGTON. In the letter, there is also mention on a sister of John living in Victoria. Her name was Jane PIETERS, nee CANAVAN. In the letter Michael also makes mention that he will only be in Sibthorpe for a few days. I have learnt that Sibthorpe was a painter and decorators supplier in Dublin, so perhaps Michael came from an area somewhere outside of Dublin, but close by. If anyone on the list can relate to any of the above, I would love to hear from you. Regards, Norman A. in OZ. .

    3. Hello Group! I'm looking for my great great grandfather, Valentine Simpson McCoombe. He was born in Dublin in 1802-3. He later married Charlotte Ramsay, also born in Dublin in 1800, and lived in Liverpool and worked as a cordwainer-bbootmaker until his death. I have no birth record or marriage record or record of where he and Charlotte are buried. I am assuming buried in England. How will I find the correct parish in Dublin? This group is my last resort before hiring a professional. Without any more info on Valentine, I am stuck in my research. I've checked every link I can find that has Dublin records and no Valentine. Can anyone point me in the right direction to look further,or to a nice researcher in Dublin who could help? My thanks to you, Linda McCoombe Pennsylvania, USA. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to IRL-DUBLIN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    2. Angela, Ancestry, from my understanding, has an extensive Irish genealogy section. www.ancestry.co.uk is part of the ancestry hierarchy. Most of the other major websites such as www.genealogy.com are also related to ancesrty.com. You really should have no problem. If you are seeking documents, there are various county heritage centers, just google the county you rellies are from and you should have no problem. 3. Hi Janet, in the lists of families in Ireland residing between the 11th and 16th century, McCrosky is not listed. However, it seems likely you are looking at either:- MacCloskey Donegal, MacCloskey{chief] Derry or MacCrossan Tyrone, or MacCrossan Donegal. All form the North of Ireland. Don't forget in recording names, the English would only write down the phonetic equivalent sound as they had no conception of the gaelic tongue in which it would have been conveyed. After the 16th C: other names come into play, but these are the nearest i can find to your search from them. I'll keep looking through my Gaelic resources. 2. Hi Lou, I am also researching Gallaghers in Dublin. My GG Grandfather was named John and married GG Grandmother, nee Mary Smith. They owned a tobbaconist's at 32 Stoney Batter Road. Dublin census records indicate John Gallagher became deceased prior to 1901. On Mary's death certificate it says he was a Mason by profession. Her birthyear (1828) would make me think he was born in the 1820's. Are there any bells ringing for you with this? Susan

Dublin Library has a collection of photos taken as part of the insurance assessment of the North Strand bombings. http://www.dublinheritage.ie/historic_photographs/index.htm Might be worthwhile contacting the library and see what they have to say about number 30.
