    1. [IRL-DUBLIN] Indentured Servants From England
    2. InTheWoods
    3. Here is the best link I have found on Indentured servants from England. YOU can click and search the court proceedings and find a wealth of information...not all very useful but still it is very interesting. http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/about/legal-info.html#top In 1718, the British Parliament passed the Transportation Act, under which England began sending its imprisoned convicts to be sold as indentured servants in the American colonies. After 1718, approximately 60,000 convicts, dubbed "the King's passengers," were sent from England to America. Ninety percent of them stayed in Maryland and Virginia. Although some returned to England once their servitude was over, many remained and began their new lives in the colonies. Needless to say they also shipped some of them to Canada, Australia and New Zeeland. The documents do give the destination when the sentence is transported. Hope this is a help to someone...Harold

    3. Hi Charlie, When I saw the name of Bowe, I thought of an incident that happened in my district in Nth Queensland about 40 years ago, a mystery that is still unsolved. A man by the name of James Bowe arrived here about 1920-30 and lived with a family in my district. He had confided to a few English families living in our farming area that he was really a brother/cousin/ of the late Queen Mother, formerly Lady Bowes-Lyon, the late mother of our present Queen Elizabeth 2, and because of a serious problem with the law in England, he was sent first to India and then to Australia. He was known as a remittance man, receiving a remittance from his parents in England so as not to cause any embarrassment to the Queens Mother and her family at that time. He eventually died around 1936 not sure of the date, but think I have a record here somewhere. He was buried in the district cemetery but the strange thing was, he had a beautiful tombstone placed on his grave, with his name shown as James Bowes-Lyon. There was a write up in the local paper when he died and he was known as James Bowe, an English Gentleman. Usually, no big write up was given to an ordinary worker and that was interesting, No one could tell us why his tombstone had a different name.. The reason I and my husband became interested, was because we used to visit the graves of my husbands grandmother and aunty and noticed this imposing looking grave stone and the name really caught my attention as we knew that was the same name of the late Queen Mother. . Then one day to our utmost surprise, the gravestone was smashed to pieces and the ground beneath seemed to have been disturbed. We never did find out why but we were suspicious that he may have been exhumed but to this day, we do not know and nobody I have asked seem to know the details. There were rumours that the family had a letter from the late Queen Mother after his death, thanking them for looking after him but we do not know whether to believe this rumour or not. So that is the mystery of a man called James Bowe, known as Jimmy to his friends and workmates. I thought you may be interested in this story as you are researching the name Bowe. 1. [IRL-DUBLIN] Bowe Families of Dublin and Kilkenny
    2. He Everyone, My gg grandfather, William BOWE, came to Rhode Island probably in the early 1850s. In the 1860 RI census he was living (along with, what appears to be, his sisters, Catherine, and Johanna and a brother, Michael) in No. Smithfield RI in the same house as the John SULLIVAN family and next door to the Stephen OWENS family in No. Smithfield, RI. The SULLIVAN and OWENS families were from Ireland and arrived in the US in the 1850s. I found a death certificate for one of the Owens boys (James) that indicated he was born in Dublin about 1852. So it might be possible the Sullivan, Owens, and Bowe families knew each other in Ireland (maybe Dublin) and therefore lived together to Rhode Island. Questions: Does anyone have any information on Stephen Owens born about 1823 in Ireland and married to Elizabeth ___ about 1840 possibly in Dublin? or John Sullivan born about 1837 in Ireland (possibly Dublin) and married to Julia ___ about 1854 ? Note: I have a collection of Bowe family data from County Kilkenny if someone needs a lookup on the Bowe families of this county. thanks for the help, Charlie King gg grandson of William Bowe of No. Smithfield RI and Ireland ________________________________________________________________________ Interested in getting caught up on today's news? 3. Hi Valerie..... I'm also searching for the Bow/Bowe family in Ireland. I don't know where exactly they came from unfortunately. Timothy Bow(e) was born Jan 1822 in Ireland. He married Catherine Clary (b. 1825 in Dublin) on 19 August 1849 in Burlington County, NJ. Timothy had two brothers, Edward (b. 1826) and William (b. Jan 1829). I know William immigrated in 1848, but I don't know about Timothy and Edward. Timothy and Catherine are my ggg grandparents. Do any of these names sound familiar to you?
