Hello John, I looked at your 1920's map of Dublin with interest, as I have a relative who lived there from 1910 onwards at least. He was said to be a wool buyer of Merchants Quay. I couldn't find that address on your map, though I presume it's a riverside one? Merchant's Quay is on the south side of the Liffey where Capel Street crosses the river. The information I have on my maternal great great grandparents is as follows: James McDonnell was born March 8, 1831 in Garristown, Dublin, Ireland. His wife , Marcella Walsh, was born in Chicago, Illinois August 8, 1837 in Chicago, Illinois. James immigrates to this country sometime around 1852-1854. He is married December 6, 1856 at St. Bridget's Church in Chicago to Marcella. I know of his birth date from a notation in the family bible, but no other record exists to my knowledge. The marriage information comes from the parish log, as all civil records were destroyed in the Chicago Fire of 1871. Marcella and James have twelve children, and both parents expire in 1891. What I am interested in trying to establish is James' birth, and/or baptism records. I also know that some McDonnells still live today in Garristown. Any suggestions are to where to begin would be appreciated. Please contact me directly at young.m.f@sbcglobal.net. Thank you. Michael Young
Hello List Have just started researching my Irish connections and have the following:- Elizabeth Bayley b1838 Dublin Ireland, father John Bayley. According to Elizabeth Bayley's 1859 marriage certificate to William Edmunds in Surrey England her father John Bayley was a Sergeant in the 958th? Regiment and was shown as deceased. Any guidance in the way I can possibly trace Elizabeth Bayley, her family, and any information on the 958th? Regiment would be much appreciated. Regards Richard Hobbs Victoria Australia.

All Burials at Monkstown 6th October 1791 buried Francis Rickaby 23 August 1788 buried George Riccaby No date just the year 1794 John Rickabee buried Mr Rickaby ( No name ) buried July 13th 1787 Cheers Cara
Hi Kaye I am not sure if there are any RICKABY's buried in Deansgrange Cemetery. My G Grandfather, Thomas, was baptised at St Philips & St James Church in Booterstown in 1831. He came to Australia and died here. His parents are listed as John & Margaret RICKABY [her maiden name is unknown to me, at this time]. I have also a certificate of burial for John Rickaby, Feb 15, 1854 in the parish of Monkstown, Co Dublin. After visiting Dublin, I know that Booterstown, Blackrock and Monkstown are very close together. Could I impose on you to see if there are any RICKABY's in your cemetery list Regards Val > ---------------------------------------------------------------------- > > Message: 1 > Date: Sun, 18 Feb 2007 11:55:24 +0000 > From: <catherine10@eircom.net> > Subject: Re: [IRL-DUBLIN] WHITESIDE to Shirley > To: irl-dublin@rootsweb.com, irl-dublin@rootsweb.com > Message-ID: <200702181155.l1IBtRQj031387@mail.rootsweb.com> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii > > Hi Shirley, > > I own inscriptions books for Deansgrange Cemetery, Blackrock, Co Dublin, > Ireland. The streets are still there. They can be seen on the following 1920's map: http://www.mywebtree.co.uk/diane/dublin%2022%20Jan%2007.jpg You should be able to download this and zoom in or zoom in online. South Side Mercer Street Upper and Lower are to the east of St Stephen's Green - see bottom edge of the map, and look for a label Gaiety Theatre. Trinity Street is to the east of Trinity College, just off Dame Street. Look northwards from the Gaiety Theatre label. North Side Follow O'Connell St northwards from the river. Turn right onto Parnell St and then the second on the left is North Great Georges St. There are some more modern maps of Dublin in the same directoy at : http://www.mywebtree.co.uk/diane/ The files are largish. Thank you Marc. It's safest to review maps closer in time. Street names change quite a bit over the years. For example, here's some information I found out about two of the streets I mentioned: Mercer-str. (York-str.) 1773. >From its proximity to the hospital, for sick poor; erected by Mrs. Mary Mercer, spinster (will, 1733), opened in 1734, incorporated 1750, - on the site of an ancient S. Stephen's Church and Church-yard, and a still more ancient leper hospital. (See S. Stephen-str.) In 1728, the present Mercer-str. (up. and lr.) had been called Love-la. In 1860, the name Mercer-str. up. was given to French-str., q.v. Trinity-la. 1. W. (Near Christ Church Cathedral.) 1190. See Holy Trinity-la. 2. E. = Trinity-str., q.v., 1730. Trinity-str. (Dame-str.) 1728. -ct. 1790. -p1. 1792. From Trinity-hall, - a public free school erected here about 1616. (G. H. D., iii. 8.] Formerly called Trinity-lane (yet still so in 1756). The hill on which S. Andrew's Church stands was also called Trinity-mount. [(G. H. D., iii. 17.] (Cf. Jesus-la. in Cambridge, - and Holy Ghost-la. in Waterford.)
Hi Catherine, I would like a favor.............would you please look up the James MacKiernan Family plot in Deansgrange Cemetery? These are my Irish Aunts and cousins and I would certainly like to know what words are written on the stones. I believe there is a Kathleen (Aunt), James (Uncle) Maureen, Kathleen, Eithne, Teresa (1st cousins) and Elizabeth Murphy (Aunt). They are all in the same burial plot. I would greatly appreciate it if you have the time to do this. Many, many thanks. Can anyone direct me to a map of Dublin City from the 1850's and/or 1860's? I am traveling to Dublin for the first time this summer and I have several family addresses from that period that I want to visit. I need to verify that the street names haven't changed since then. >From a birth certificate in 1867 - 11 Upper Mercer Street >From Shaw's directory 1850 - 7 Trinity Street; 19 North Great Georges Street. Thanks. Adriana

Kaye, In your inscription book for the Deansgrange Cemetery, Blckrock, Co Dublin, is there one for JOHN or CATHERINE DOYLE? This is just a long shot. I don't know when or where in Dublin or the Co that they lived. My grandfather, Lawrence William Doyle, was born to them in May 1840. He died inthe US. Thank you for looking. I'm looking for a mentor because I so, need some help or direction. After many years of searching, I've only recently discovered my Brennan ancestors. Have now found my gt. grandfather Thomas Brennan but I'm finding it incredibly difficult to gather info on him because Thomas and his wife separated in the mid 1920's After the separation there is absolutely no details of Thomas until he turns up in Raphoe in 1929, nothing is known of his whereabouts after 1929,. it's not even know for sure where he is buried, but it's thought possibly with his comrades in Glasnevin. It's thought that Thomas may have originated from Kilkenny, probably born in the 1880's. He may have had a brother who was a priest, thought to have been in Wexford. Thomas married in Cootehill Kilkenny 1907. Thomas and his wife travelled around Ireland, Thomas as a stage performer and concert manager, his wife was a concert singer. They travelled with his wife's family, the concert proprietors Linehan/Lenahan's as a Travelling Bazaar.. Thomas and his wife had 4 children born Kilkenny, Leitrim, Tipperary and Cork.. It is known that Thomas was active during the Anglo/Irish war and it's believed he held a senior position. During 1920 Thomas's son was born in Cork but Thomas was not with them in Cork, he was living at 42c Great Brunswick Street.. Number 42 was the Ancient Concert Hall. Thomas was a professional Variety Artist but in 1920 whilst living in Brunswick Street, he gives his profession a a Mechanic. I have read the recordings off what was happening at that time in Brunswick Street and elsewhere and therefore realize why Thomas was was in Dublin but can any one throw any light on Thomas for me?.... Much appreciated Jackie.
