I found this website, which lists streets, note registration districts, parishes, and wards, all on an easily downloadable .pdf file: http://users.skynet.be/ken.lennan/len008.htm Now, here's my question: my ancestor, Bartholemew Murphy, is listed in the 1850 City Directory of Dublin as a grocer on 65 Thomas St. Was it common for a business owner to also live at his place of business? I ask because if Bartholemew lived at that same address, which is in the parish of St. Catherine's, it narrows down where I might go for church or cemetery records. -Pat. Wary

As I have stated before I am more than happy to look these up and as you can all imagine I have received a huge number of requests BUT the replies are coming in in all sorts of ways: from different web sites, with different subject lines, in replies to others requests and some with a subject line not related to the subject and these are taking up my research time and are very hard to try to work out. I also have some that I have looked up but have not had a reply as yet so I am unaware as to whether the messages have been received. SO to all those that have not had a reply and to those who would still like a lookup could you please: ** submit and/or re-submit to me personally at vbgarton@optusnet.com.au ** with " Mt Jerome Cemetery lookup " in the subject line. This will then allow me to reply to you in person and I will also send a general reply to all the lists. I will look up the ones with a time frame first and all those that request a general search I will keep these until I have more than one request for a specific letter eg " Elizabeth M'. I was going tomorrow BUT I will now leave it until Monday and see who replies to this e-mail. Regards Valerie B Garton [ Mrs ]in sunny Sydney A/Dip LAH & Dip FHS. Researcher in Genealogy

Sir Hugh Gough was married, aged 28, on 3rd June 1807, at Plymouth, Devon, to Frances Maria Stephens, daughter of General Edward Stephens, R.A.. They had a family of 5 children, 2 sons and 3 daughters. Frances died in 15th March 1863 and the Field Marshal at his home, St Helen's, Booterstown, Dublin, on 2nd March 1869. To find more on this family go here, the poem tells the story of what happened to the statue, but its a bit risque to say the least to put here but a laugh at the pranksters who did demolish the statue. http://www.turtlebunbury.com/history/history_family/hist_family_gough.htm#fmshg Other families with articles on this page are Articles Benson of The Fould Cuffe Family - The Earls of Desart Dacres Dixon - Astronomers & Earldoms De Burgh - The Gentry of Oldtown De Robeck - The Swedes of Gowran Grange Fennell Family - The Quakers of Burtown Whishaw Family: From Rudheath to Russia Yelverton, Viscounts Avonmore To find a photo of the statue go here, indeed there is some brilliant pictures of Dublin in this site. http://www.quinnipiac.edu/other/abl/etext/irish/pictures/p30.html And as I thought it simply was attacked becuase it had A touch of British history attached to it, although the man was irish born, a pure act of vandalism such a shame. Gough's Statue was a fine equestrian bronze statue of Field Marshal Gough a veritable Blimpish-Pukkah-Wallah Sahib old empire builder of the first water. Presumably it was for this reason that the fine equestrian statue in his honour had been singled out for an attack by a few of our own blimpish boyos. Certain armchair generals on the fringe of the republican movement were exultant at this latest 'strike' against the hated british empire But for the most part Dubliners of every persuasion and party deplored the mindless vandalism that robbed them of one of their familar landmarks an equestrian statue in bronze which was reputed to be one of the finest in Europe . go here to read the full article http://www.sluggerotoole.com/index.php/weblog/comments/former_irish_senator_not_wanted_in_louth/ And when you have gone through all those simply do a google and put in Gough Statue Dublin and you will be surpised what more you will find Cheers I enjoyed the read of all this great subject Cara ----- Original Message ----- From: "Karen Oleson" <oleson@earthlink.net> To: <irl-dublin@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 08, 2007 9:58 PM Subject: [IRL-DUBLIN] Help with Story of Gough Statue, Please Hi Dubliners and Listers ... HI Cara, The most common variations for the BOWE name that I have found in the Irish records are: Bowe, Bowes, Bow, and Bows These seem to be used interchangeably in IRL and to some degree in the US. In the US I have also found the name: 'Bough' as well, but not in Ireland. Valerie, I have observed your generous and helpful responses to many enquirers on the Dublin list. My enquiries relate to earlier periods, but in case you have relevant reference material, may I ask you to check for the name Conyngham particularly at the very early 18C. Three Conyngham brothers came from Dublin in 1826 (Patrick (b. ca. 1796), 1828 (Edward b. ca. 1806) and 1832 (George). One was described as wireworker, other as coach maker. I have found nothing on their Irish end re their family. A birth record of any of the above or of a younger brother, or burial of a parent, or marriage in Dublin of Patrick to Honora Kelly ca. 1826 or prior...all elude me.
