You need to look at the street section of the directory to see who else is living with him, if anyone, and who else is living around him, what their occupations are and what size a property they are in. Also follow through all the Dublin Directories to see when he was first listed and when he disappears. These Dublin Directories can give a huge amount of family information but must be used fully and year by year to gain a proper insight in to the family. Valerie, I live in a tiny town called Stillwater, Pennsylvania. We have no library. I checked a few of the local libraries online, and they don't have the directories. I did also check the LDS site, and fortunately they not only have several directories, but they also have a family history center not 1/2 hour away. So I'll try that. Thanks so much for the help. -Pat.
Pat, where did you access the 1850 City directory of Dublin .? My great great grandfather, Michael CANAVAN or McCANAVON was a house painter in Dublin, so perhaps he may have been mentioned in the directory, hence my interest. Norman, I found the directory at: http://www.dublin1850.com/dublin1850/index.html Unfortunately I could not find a Canavan or McCanavon. Kaye, Thank you for that bit of info. I had suspected that he might have lived upstairs from his place of business, and I will keep to that assumption. Valerie, I would love to follow your wonderfully sound advice about more thoroughly searching the city directories, but unfortunately it looks as though the online source only allows one to search by name, and I can only find the 1850 online. Thanks for the great tip though; I will try to find a way to follow through on it. I didn't realize so much information was available in the directories. And a BTW, I googled 65 Thomas St. in Dublin, and that address is now graced by a pub called O'Neill's. If I ever get to Dublin again, I'll be sure to visit it, and have a pint of cider. I just hope the street names and numbers haven't been changed since 1850, but even if they have, I'd go there anyway ;) I think that about covers it. Thanks for your responses. -Pat.
Hi Pat, It would have been very common for your Ancestors to have lived above their shop. If you can imagine Dublin ciy in 1850, much of it would be tenement dewellings as there would have been only private housing unless you were very rich to own one.
