    3. Good Morning CARA, Thank you fore the listing of Dublin Streets. It is very Interesting to find that "SOUTH ANN STREET" which I have in 1898 was there in 1851. Could I point out to other listers, that in the 1851 listing I found it under A -Ann Street St. So If you are looking for a street name remember to look for possible variations. Also can I add (Not sure which list it was on] But no "* South Ann st Dublin" the street level was a shop [as it still is 4 years ago, the next three floors were let out as flats so you might have a problem with various listings if you are look on a list that gives trade or profession listings. Bye for now on this sunny day here in Cheltenham UK Regards to All Peter ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cara_Links" <cracker@hotkey.net.au> To: <irl-dublin@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 15, 2007 1:30 PM Subject: [IRL-DUBLIN] LIST OF STREET NAMES DUBLIN CITY 1851 A-C

    3. Cara, I suggested the site based on Valerie's response that your ancestor may have been with the British military and serving in Greece. Sorry it did not apply this time. The site is much more than military and is worth a look just the same. As for making payment, the site accepts all major credit cards so currency conversion is not a problem. 3. I must say it's news to me as only the subscribers name is listed in a street directory or almanack. That subscriber may or may not be the head of a household but even if he or she is, you won't see any mention of family members or even a lodger/tenant unless that lodger/tenant is also a subscriber or a gentleman in which case that entry will follow separately below the other. Needless to say, you can see any subscriber who is living or in business on a street but it is rare that anyone living above that address in rooms or tenements is ever named. Often subscribers names are published for many years after their death as a business will use the familar name rather than change,or the fact of a death has not been communicated to the publishers, so all you can get is an idea as to when someone died or moved, as the case may be. Basically, all you can deduce from a street directory, beyond the obvious, is clues and supposition, not proper insight as you cannot even say with confidence at that point, that someone listed in say 1867 was actually still alive that year. Brian ----- Original Message ---- From: Valerie Garton <vbgarton@optusnet.com.au> To: irl-dublin@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, 15 April, 2007 12:49:52 AM Subject: Re: [IRL-DUBLIN] 1888 Co. Dublin Street/Area Finder, plus a question You need to look at the street section of the directory to see who else is living with him, if anyone, and who else is living around him, what their occupations are and what size a property they are in. Also follow through all the Dublin Directories to see when he was first listed and when he disappears. These Dublin Directories can give a huge amount of family information but must be used fully and year by year to gain a proper insight in to the family. Dublin Street/Area Finder, plus a question I found this website, which lists streets, note registration districts, parishes, and wards, all on an easily downloadable .pdf file: http://users.skynet.be/ken.lennan/len008.htm Now, here's my question: my ancestor, Bartholemew Murphy, is listed in the 1850 City Directory of Dublin as a grocer on 65 Thomas St. Was it common for a business owner to also live at his place of business? I ask because if Bartholemew lived at that same address, which is in the parish of St. Catherine's, it narrows down where I might go for church or cemetery records. -Pat. 3. Cara, If you are looking for an ancestor born to someone while active in the British Military, regardless of their homeland you may find that record at findmypast.com formerly 1837online. The record of birth, marriage and death for the active military and dependents while in service is a British record. Here are the selections: Within this section: Soldiers Died in the Great War 1914-18 Armed forces births 1761-1994 National Roll of the Great War 1914-18 Armed forces marriages 1818-1994 Army Roll of Honour 1939-45 Armed forces deaths 1796-1994 Other army lists roll calls 1656-1888 It is in these lists that I found my ancestors born in Jamaica and Canada West (Toronto). It is a pay-per-view site. 1. Re: [IRL-DUBLIN] 1850 Dublin City Directory
    2. Norman Archibald
    3. Val, I live in Yarra Glen, East of Melbourne. Perhaps the Victorian State library might have the Dublin directories. I`ve been researching for a number of years now but have steered away from Irish research in Ireland up till now, for obvious reasons, but of course, my family history may remain a little "lop sided" if I don`t at least make an attempt. With names like MAGUIRE, COSTELLO, PHELAN and CANAVAN in my tree, I feel bound to press on and see what I can find. Norm. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Valerie Garton" <vbgarton@optusnet.com.au> To: <irl-dublin@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 15, 2007 1:50 PM Subject: Re: [IRL-DUBLIN] 1850 Dublin City Directory > Where are you Norm ? > > Regards Valerie B Garton [ Mrs ]in sunny Sydney > A/Dip LAH & Dip FHS. > Researcher in Genealogy > > -----Original Message----- > From: irl-dublin-bounces@rootsweb.com > [mailto:irl-dublin-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Norman Archibald > Sent: Sunday, 15 April 2007 1:38 PM > To: irl-dublin@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [IRL-DUBLIN] 1850 Dublin City Directory > > > Thanks for looking Pat. > Pat, would you know if there later directories than 1850.? > Norm. > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Wary" <we4wary1s@epix.net> > To: <irl-dublin@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Sunday, April 15, 2007 11:37 AM > Subject: Re: [IRL-DUBLIN] 1850 Dublin City Directory > > >> >> Norman, I found the directory at: >> >> http://www.dublin1850.com/dublin1850/index.html >> >> Unfortunately I could not find a Canavan or McCanavon. >> >> Kaye, Thank you for that bit of info.
