Alan, Kingstown has many references in the 1845 Dublin Almanac. Is there something in particular you are looking for? Let me know. My great grandparents John McKeown (McKeon) and Mary Monahan (Monehan) were married in 1856 in St. Michaels RC Church, Kingstown. They are reputed to have had 3 sets of twins - none of whom survived - until the birth of their son James in 1862. Sometime after his birth they went to live in Manchester, England, and a daughter, my grandmother Margaret McKeown was born there in 1864. I have not so far discovered anymore about the family in Co. Dublin other than their marriage. Another list member has kindly found 4 McKeon families and 3 Monahan families in Kingstown in 1851 and it is possible that some may be relatives. Any further help would be gratefully appreciated. I'm interested in Little Britain St. I know it is there in modern times, but didn't see it on your list. Anyone know if it changed names? Liz ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
Greetings, This is partly for Shelagh and her connection to James and Mary O'Neil (nee: Power) of Dublin. Just wondered if you knew anything further of Mary's family? I have an ANNE POWER - born in Dublin in 1823. From what I can figure out...she too had family in Wexford in the Edermine area. I think her father was in the military. She married JAMES ROURKE sometime between 1939 and 1845 in Dublin. James was a tailor before he joined the R.A. in Dublin. Their childrens names were RICHARD, JOHN, ELIZABETH, ROSINA, JAMES JOSEPH and JAMES MICHAEL JOSEPH. James was stationed at Charlemont, Armagh at the time of the birth of their first born Richard. They then went from there to Bermuda, where they lived for 5 years or so...where the birth of Rosina and James took place...so the family went with him. He was then stationed in India and other places, so the family ended up living in Woolwich, England, and stayed here until his retirement. >From the naming of their children, it looks like they used the Irish naming pattern...naming after the parents etc., but I haven't been able to find which ROURKE / POWER family of Dublin they belonged to. Would love to hear from anyone with connections to these families...to find a fit for my James and Anne. Regards, Deborah
Hello Bev., Just recently I wrote to the Secretary of the IRRS and received a letter back saying my request has been referred to the society's hon.archivist who will contact me in due course. I received the letter approx. 3 weeks from posting mine which I thought was very good as I live in Australia. I gave my email address in the letter, but don't know whether he will contact me that way. Perhaps your letter has gone astray. Hi... Does anyone have a contact at the IRRS? I wrote to the Society a while back. I had even made a phone call from the US to try and get a name of the archivist and was told just to write and I would receive an answer. I hope I am not getting too impatient, but I am still trying to find information about James Rawlins, who was the Superintendent of the Dublin and Kingstown Railway from 1843 - 1849. A book by the late K.A. Murray discusses Rawlins. It would be wonderful if someone from the society could direct me to more info. Thank you Brian, As always one learns a lot, when you join in. To tell the truth, I didn't even know that people had to subscribe to be included in Street Directories. I presume that goes for Thom's Directory, too. Regards Inga. ----- Original Message ----- From: "IrishRecordFinder" <irishrecordfinder@yahoo.com> To: <irl-dublin@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, April 16, 2007 12:49 PM Subject: Re: [IRL-DUBLIN] 1888 Co. Dublin Street/Area Finder, plus a question I must say it's news to me as only the subscribers name is listed in a street directory or almanack. That subscriber may or may not be the head of a household but even if he or she is, you won't see any mention of family members or even a lodger/tenant unless that lodger/tenant is also a subscriber or a gentleman in which case that entry will follow separately below the other. Needless to say, you can see any subscriber who is living or in business on a street but it is rare that anyone living above that address in rooms or tenements is ever named. Often subscribers names are published for many years after their death as a business will use the familar name rather than change,or the fact of a death has not been communicated to the publishers, so all you can get is an idea as to when someone died or moved, as the case may be. Basically, all you can deduce from a street directory, beyond the obvious, is clues and supposition, not proper insight as you cannot even say with confidence at that point, that someone listed in say 1867 was actually still alive that year. Also follow through all the Dublin Directories to see when he was first listed and when he disappears. These Dublin Directories can give a huge amount of family information but must be used fully and year by year to gain a proper insight in to the family. I ask because if Bartholemew lived at that same address, which is in the parish of St. Catherine's, it narrows down where I might go for church or cemetery records. -Pat.
