    3. Registration of Births began in 1864 and was compulsory, and doesnt cost to register, but in the time frame you are looking at they will most certainly would have been placed in a parish register when baptised and this was their form of registration And as most parish priests were probably paid in kind I feel that your family of Nolans would have been a God Fearing family and have registered them. Because the parish priest would have called on them in those days to make sure. What you are needing to locate is the Parish that they are from to locate the parish register you will need to look into. Have you any other clues of where they are from other than Dublin? DO you know what they worked at before leaving Dublin? and what religion were they I am assuming RC but they may have been Church of Ireland or wheelbarrow or something. 3. Well the one that went to New York, when his wife died the ceremony was in the Baptist Church that was an advertisement in the New York Times. The names of the family was Skellern They were Printers and my G G Grandad was a Bookbinder in London. He died in an Almshouse which was for people who went to St Giles in the Strand. They were not Catholics by the look of it. I just do not have the knowledge of Dublin Churches. I wish I had started earlier in my life. Now I am 75 and disabled and no one to take me out. Such a lot to learn . Best Wishes from Diane. 3. Greetings all from Tasmania, I have posted in the past without any success so I thought I would try again. My GG grandfather JAMES CARROLL was said to be born in Dublin ca 1857 He married Annie Anastasia Marsh in Sydney in August 1877 at St Patrick's Catholic Church On the marriage Certificate James parents are shown as JOHN CARROLL AND HONORA MORLEY . Would anyone have any ideas as to how I may go about finding more information e.g place or district of residence, birth/christening of James, any other siblings. When James emigrated to Australia. In fact any information or guidance offered would be most gratefully appreciated. Thank you for reading this. Cheers, Ellen

    1. [IRL-DUBLIN] Dublin Address
    2. Listers, Does 3 Albert Court in Dublin still exist? I just received my great grandfather's, John Joseph Toole, birth certificate. I am under the impression that people had their babies at their home and not in a hospital. His father, John Toole, and mother, Catherine Toole (formerly Williams) is listed with her maiden name. Can I assume (or will I make an ass of u and me) that the person named (it looks like) Margaret Toole was the grandmother of the baby and that she assisted in the birth? Since my great grandfather was born John Joseph to John Toole, can I also assume that John's father was named Joseph? Bill Karr in Peoria, IL., USA

Thank you Valerie for your kind offer. I will be looking forward to seeing if anything turns up. 2. I'm sorry, Shirley, but I don't think so. My Murphy family was in Dublin before 1906. The Mary Murphy I'm looking for was born about 1845, the daughter of Bartholemew Murphy, who was a grocer in Dublin, and that's all I know about him. Mary came to the US at the outbreak of the U.S. Civil War; when her ship arrived at its intended port in North Carolina (where she was to live with relatives) they found it barricaded by the Union Navy. She went to Newport, RI instead. She did have a brother who remained in Ireland, and he had a son named John Fitzgerald Murphy (usually later known simply as Fitzgerald Murphy), who was born in 1869. He's the John I'm looking for. He came to the United States, probably in the early 1880's, and died in Phoenix, AZ in 1906. In that short life he managed to become a very popular and prolific playwright. -Pat.
