I was in Dublin in July and found the announcement of my Great Grandfathers death and a report on the funeral in Dublin in December 1898 in "The Freeman's Journal & National Press". This was on a microfilm in the National Library in Dublin. Hope that helps in some way. Linda That would depend upon is status in life, if he had been a politician of some note I would say yes, but I would be more inclined to look to where he lived and what papers of the day were around and what religion he was, now some will say whats that got to do with it, but some of the religions of the day, put out their own papers and the Obituary could be found in that Now in regards to the second part on this mail 1934-1955 may find you with an Obituary written in the local newscopy of the area also it may appear in the above sources. 1850-1889 I would follow the same as I have told Linda Also may I take this time to say that in Australia and also in Ireland an Obituary is a respectful account of the deceased life and a death notice is of his death and of course you know what a funeral notice is for. I have added this, because I am noticing more and more people are likening an Obituary to a death notice Thankyou Cara Obit List Admin for Ireland ----- Original Message ----- From: "Linda Dolan" <linmd@sbcglobal.net> To: <irl-dublin@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, September 06, 2007 8:51 AM Subject: Re: [IRL-DUBLIN] Obituaries; Death/Funeral Notices > > If a person died in say 1870 circa in the Newbridge, Milltown, > Kildare area would it likely make the Dublin newspaper? > > Linda > > > > At 11:09 PM 9/4/2007, you wrote: >>May I ask readers for their experiences of finding obituaries and/or death >>or funeral notices in Dublin newspapers? >> >>I have two time frames. Hello to the list, I am trying to un-ravel my gt.gt. grandfather's early life. His name is Robert WILLIAMS of Portadown, born in 1777. Robert was in the 25th foot West Kents, and retired as captain. I have been told that Robert was married first to the Earl of BECTIVE'S daughter, then to a Miss FISHER of Kells. Then to a Miss Mary Ann CHAMPAYNE, with whom he had four daughters. The first was born in 1822. Some time between 1797 and 1820(?) Robert married the two ladies. I do not know if there were children from these marriages. My question is: does any one know the history of the Earl of BECTIVES in that time period, or even something of Miss FISHER ? Have no idea where the Earl lived. Hoping that some one can help. I am trying to trace the parents of a JAMES MARTIN born about 1840 in Swords, Dublin. I am hoping that someone else is looking for this family. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Regards, Janet
Hi, I would really appreciate it if someone could do a look up in the 1901 census for Dublin for me. I have located the addresses for some of my great-grandparents in the early 1900s and I am hoping they or some of their family were living their in 1901. The details are as follows: ROONEY - Moore Lane (possibly no.17) BERESFORD - Sackville Lane/Avenue and also Georges Place (possibly no. 22) BYRNE - South Georges Street (possibly no.25) As I say, any help would be appreciated Many Thanks Denis Horan e-mail d.horan@mellibank.com or denph62@yahoo.co.uk This e-mail is for the stated addressee only and access to it by any other person is unauthorised. Thank you Cara. In the US a death notice and an obituary are the same thing unless of course no one cared enough to write an obit or it was a private issue, then you may get what you call a death notice. Thanks again Also may I take this time to say that in Australia and also in Ireland an Obituary is a respectful account of the deceased life and a death notice is of his death and of course you know what a funeral notice is for. I have added this, because I am noticing more and more people are likening an Obituary to a death notice

Hi Bill. I might be going whilst I am in Dublin so give me the details. I notice that these graves are not in perpetuity but you should look at the register to see who was the attestant. Valerie: I am not disputing anything that has been said. I wrote to the cemetery and Mr. Massey the keeper of the cemetery wrote back and gave the following: John Gordon Lewis son in law of deceased and where he was living at the time. That he signed for the interment of my g uncle Joseph Anderson Holland. Someone has to take responsibility for opening the grave and to give permission to bury if there is any family to do so. Do not know where Mr. Massey got his information, however, it was correct. He was so gracious to answer both letters and give so freely his information. This is all I have to go on. The info had to be there, otherwise he would not have known. With the name of John Gordon Lewis I discovered which daughter he had married and found a g g granddaughter of John Gordon Lewis who lives in England also. We are working together now to search for the remainder of this family that I have been searching since 1977. Dear Cara, Thank you for your answer. In time Trinity College started to have degree Courses in Engineering. When they started, I don't know, but my Father-in-Law and his older brother both got their degrees there in the 1920th.. There already was a "Institution for Civil Engineers of Ireland" in 1844. My husbands Grggrandfather William Forsyth became an Associate Member in Oct 1845 and was duly elected a Member of the Institution in May 1849. I wrote to the present Institution of Engineers in Dublin last year and they kindly sent me learned letters William Forsyth had delivered at meetings. Unfortunately they had no information about his private life, such as where he was born or where he had studied. Information I still lack, unfortunately.
