I did this with a branch of the family I was researching in New Zealand. I sent out 10 letters and now have contact with three relatives over there, and it only cost a few dollars in postage. Good luck, John

    3. Hi, I've looked at the Rathkenny microfilm at the National Library. The only name near to it looks like Mathew Grohan, parents-Pat Grohan + Ann Cumisky. Sponsers -John Coffey Mary Farrell. There's only one tape spanning the 1800 to 1890. The writing is very hard to decipher. I just wrote it as I saw it. There's more than six pages which are just scribbles. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Maggie

Thomas Hughes was in the military in India and in those military records was his birthdate and place of birth. He married in India in 1851 to Jane STACK. She was born in India to a British military father. They has children in India, left for Ireland around 1860 and had a couple more children in Ireland. I know nothing else about the family in Ireland. I'm sure Thomas must have had more brother & sisters. They were Catholic. I'm waiting for a response from Glasnevin Cemetery about more details about the Thomas HUGHES buried there in 1868. Thanks for the interest, Colette, and to the others that have responded to my inquiries. Sue

    3. Hi Susan How do you know your Thomas was born in 1817 in Glasnevin? Do you have something to prove it? Have you looked at Griffiths Valuation? Or at Shaws 1850 Dublin Directory? Did Thomas marry? If so, to whom, and when? What was his religion?> Did he have children? What did he do for a living? Did you get the Entry Image from Glasnevin site? I've found that info extremely useful in confirming "my" people. I presume that whoever he's buried with is no relation? Sorry for all the questions - just trying to maybe give you some clues about where/what to check, in case you haven't already done it. Good luck! Colette

    3. (I tried to send this earlier but it bounced .... ) Shirley, I sympathise. I too have a Belfast family named Hoffmann (originally from Bavaria) and it took many years just to work out a simple family tree. I did send away for one death certificate but it gave very limited information. Then I thought to look in both the old Belfast Directories and modern-day telephone directory, and wrote to the few Hoffmanns listed. I struck gold with one of them, not a Hoffmann but he once owned a business named Hoffmann and was able to give more information. There do not seem to be any descendants at all apart from possibly one man who went to America. I have not been able to trace him further after his initial arrival at Ellis Island, although I did discover the record of a 3-month visit by his parents and sister in 1921. Incidentally that record threw me as the parents gave totally different birthplaces to those I had discovered some years earlier! All the English/Irish records merely say "born in Germany"; it was family hearsay that it ! was Bavaria. Nancy in NZ > By now all of Ireland knows that I am researching the Joseph Holland family of Belfast. In all the 20+ years there has not been one person, except from England, that has said they might be remotely related to this family.

I've been through the Clonebraney WADEs in Burke's pretty thoroughly. There is also a large body of research by a librarian S.C. WADE of New York, published in 1900. His descendancy list mostly agrees with Burke but not everywhere. There are always a few black sheep whose existence was conveniently pushed to the side. Lots of Henrys, Johns and Roberts. To trace the Wade ancestral tree To the very root of the pedigree, Were a task as rash as ridiculous, Through antediluvian mists as thick As a London fog such a line to pick, Were enough, in truth to puzzle Old Nick, Not to name Sir Harris Nicholas. - R. L. Stevenson--Skerryvore. Now following up on Bill's suggestion re Wicklow. Thanks, Bill. Nancy in NZ Nancy Vada Gibb [email protected]

    3. Wills- Of course the Irish had wills, it is a valuable source of information, but and there is always a but, the all of the original wills and administations in the Public record Office were destroyed in 1922, along with most of the wills and grant books into which they had been transcribed. The indexes to wills and administration and bonds were not destroyed although a number were badly damaged. These are available in the reading room of the National Archives Dublin. I am sorry to be the bearer of the bad news about this misfortune, but and there is that but again, of late a lot of wills are appearing from private sources perhaps with a little luck yours may still surface or have surfaced. Wills and Administrations do not begin until 1871 is there any other clues to look at for your Thomas Hughes, any suggestions on who his father may have been, we may be able through indexes to cross this bridge, allowing I did Say Maybe. Cheers Cara
