Jennifer In 1901 Census Rockbrook is mentioned as the Sub District for the townland of Kilmashogue and there was an Ellen Rilley (nee Hughes) listed in this Census in this area. However her religion was stated to be Roman Catholic, but of course that does not rule her out as being connected through a marriage. The Church of Ireland Baptism records for Whitechurch commence in 1824 and there could be family baptisms in these records - perhaps those of siblings. These are held at the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. The other Parish Church could have been Rathfarnham but the early records for this church appear to have been lost in 1922 (would have to check that out for sure, but baptisms are only available from 1873 as per the list I hold) If you try Goggle Maps you will find Rockbrook o.k. and when you find it look to the "right" for Kilmashogue and Whitechurch. There is an old cemetery in Whitechurch and I am sure that the Headstone inscriptions would be found in Cantwell's books. Someone on the list may have the CD and take a look for you for your family name. Best wishes Joyce
I would very much appreciate if there is anyone on this list who can tell me about 'Back Brook' Dublin. This is the town /village / location - given by my John Riley /Reilly as his place of birth in Ireland c.1830. It is clearly written on his marriage certificate in New South Wales, Australia, in 1851.I cannot find any reference to 'Back Brook, Dublin' and would hope someone more familiar with the Dublin area may be able to help. Hello Joyce, you are quite right, anything you can think of is of importance. I don't see Rockbrook in the 1901 or 1911 cesus, just a Willbrook+a Willbrook town in the 1911. I've never heard of Willbrook either. It makes me wonder though, if Rockbrook existed in 1873, it must've been there in 1901. So either there were no houses there, which is quite possible, or the census is not as complete as we think? All feedback more than wellcome. Maggie
There is mention of Rockbrook in the Dublin County List of Landowners (1 acre or over) 1873 - 1875 (see IGP Archives), so Margaret I think it should be in 1901 and 1911 Census. However, it was only a thought (i.e. transcription error suggestion). Joyce
Nearest I can get if this was a spelling error is Ballybough. There is a Reilly there in the 1901 census. Maggie
Hi, If you go to the nationalarchives site, then click on Browse census, then you can check all of Dublin to see if there's a Back Brook listed. As far as I know, only Donnybrook existed at census times-1911. Bonnybrook + Rockbrook are fairly new. Maggie
There is a ROCKBROOK in the Rathfarnham area of Dublin, and perhaps at some stage the "Ba" in "back" was a transcription error and should have been "Ro". Joyce
Hi Anne Have you had a look at the area via google street view? Go to google, select maps and enter the location you want, you will see a little yellow man on the + / - bar on the left of the map, drag him onto the location you want to see, if there is a street view it will show the road/street with a blue outline, drop the yellow man on the location of choice and it will take you there You can then use the arrows to take a virtual wander around the location Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > > Please can anyone provide me a picture of 8 Bow Bridge, Ushers Quay, > Dublin? > > I have found my great uncle Charles Maher here in 1911 with second > wife Mary Ann > > after long time against a "wall". Hi Jennifer I see you have been seeking information on this location for quite time I can find no mention to "Back Brook" in or around Dublin, all searches are fairly blank or irrelevant Did your man write the location himself? If not it may have been misheard by whoever did , it may be clearly written it does not mean it exists Have you anything else to suggest that he was from Dublin ? It could be that Back Brook is a local expression but I would have thought it would be recorded somewhere I am sure you have looked but are there any other similar combination location names around Dublin named XXXX Brook ? Hi, mostly, it's apartment blocks at Bow lane+ Bow bridge now. Other places that you might look at in that area are Kilmainham, which leads to Bow Bridge, the Camac river, which flows at the back+Guiness. These would've been the favourite haunts of your ancesstor. My fathers family-the Goughs came from there. You might contact the fountain resource centre, at the Parochial hall in James street for info+ photos. I wil send you some too, when Im up that area. Maggie
Ye, Ive lived in Dublin forever, not too far from Blackrock. It's not near the Airport though. That's on the Nrth side. Maggie
Please can anyone provide me a picture of 8 Bow Bridge, Ushers Quay, Dublin? I have found my great uncle Charles Maher here in 1911 with second wife Mary Ann after long time against a "wall". And any more information on them and any children most welcome. Also his parents Charles Maher 1823 and Anne Mearns 1831 had a child (my grandmother) in Naas of Kildare in October 1871 before coming to Liverpool, England for the rest of their lives. Can their birth places be found? And did Charles have an earlier marriage and /or have a son John in 1845? Hi, I have never heard of Back Brook. The only places with "Brook" that I know are Donnybrook On the Sth side+Bonnybrook on the Nrth side of Dublin. I will ask around though. It could be a little place at the back of Donnybrook? If I had something else to go on, ie, the name of a Church/Chapel where a ceremony took place, I'd be able to locate it through the Parish. Maggie
Hi Cara, Wishing you a very Happy New and thanks for making the Dublin mailing list so informative and interesting Regards Marion Sydney On Sun, Jan 2, 2011 at 10:51 AM, Cara_Links <[email protected]> wrote: > > This is one of the extracts I have noted, simply because I saw the Wardlaw > name within the content. > Should have posted before but, I have not felt like doing genealogy, new > year, new feelings and I am finding I am looking to the data I have been > typing up to share with the listers, > So lets hope the fizz in my bubble does not burst. > Cheers Cara > And to each and everyone of you HAPPY NEW YEAR 2011 > > Swanzy Will Extract ( transcribed 2010) > > ACHESON > Robert Acheson of Dublin > 1-Nephew Thomas Higinbotham > 2-Niece Jane Betty 500 pounds > 3-Niece Hannah Cotter 300 pounds > Nephews > 1-Clement Higinbotham > 2-William Cotter > Sisters > 1- Jane WARDLAW > 2-Anne Cotter > 3-Penelope Nicholson > > Grandnephew > 1- Robert Acheson Thompson > > Dear wife ( No name) > > Nieces > 1- Mary > 2- Ann Thompson > 3-Penelope Henrietta Higinbotham > > Prerog will dated 9th March 1776 > Proved by John Chaigneau and T Higginbotham Exors 29 March 1776. > > > > I use BullGuard Spamfilter to keep my inbox clean. > It is completely free: www.bullguard.com/freespamfilter > > ****************************** > ATTENTION TO ALL:- Do any of you ever get to the bottom of this mail?, and > do you remove the details that do not apply to your mail and change the > SUBJECT LINE for best useage of ARCHIVED MATERIALS. > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message > -- Marion
Thanks Cara, but my Wardlaws arrived in Dublin in 1840 from Edinburgh, so the connection, if any, would be very remote. Enjoy you New Year celebrations Judy You wrote on January 02, 2011 10:51 AM Subject: [IRL-DUBLIN] ACHESON-WARDLAW > Cheers Cara > And to each and everyone of you HAPPY NEW YEAR 2011 > > Swanzy Will Extract ( transcribed 2010)........... > > Prerog will dated 9th March 1776 > Proved by John Chaigneau and T Higginbotham Exors 29 March 1776.
This is one of the extracts I have noted, simply because I saw the Wardlaw name within the content. Should have posted before but, I have not felt like doing genealogy, new year, new feelings and I am finding I am looking to the data I have been typing up to share with the listers, So lets hope the fizz in my bubble does not burst. >From Dublin Civil Registration Indexes I have the following: 1. David William Wardlaw & Mary Anne Miller had a child, John, on 4 Aug 1873 at Dublin South. 2. Marriage of Mary Anne Miller in Dublin South in 1871, but I cannot bring up her husband. I need this marriage certificate to note the parents of David Wardlaw (hopefully John) and David's occupation at Bank of Ireland to confirm my family relationship. My David William Wardlaw (1851-1891) married Eva Lemon in 1878 (Abbey Church) so I want to confirm that it was his second marriage. Also I cannot find any death records for Mary Anne Wardlaw (nee Miller) or her son John. Judy Wardlaw in Melbourne Australia
