Trinity was founded 1590 by Elizabeth 1st on Hoggin Green, now College Green. I have no idea what level of education was taught at the time but if you email them, I'm sure they will let you know. Maggie
Today I came across "Alumni Dublinenses 1593-1846 -A registry of the Students, Graduates, Professors and Provosts of Trinity College in the University of Dublin" (published 1935). In it I found my 4xg-grandfather George Drew Keogh (c1782-1861) who apparently became a pensioner student on October 3 1796 at the age of 13. Can anyone tell me whether the college at this period effectively provided a secondary education prior to matriculation for a bachelor's degree? Incidentally has anyone come across the Christian name 'Elio' who was apparently a brother (who probably died young)? Note: The book provides information on place of birth, father's name and status, and school(master) and I recommend it as a source. Unfortunately the version on Google only provides snippet information. The copy I found (at Durham University Library)had to have the sheet slit to allow me to view the Keogh's. Regards Alan Swindale Family History starts with births and ends with lives. Researching Swindale, Swindle, Swindell, Swindells, Swyndle etc! (anywhere) Gregg, Nicholson, Usher (Cumberland, Westmorland, Lancashire) Rattray (Edinburgh), Mahler (Amsterdam), Keogh (Dublin), Butler (London), Holmes (Dorset)
This was the Pre-eminent college in Ireland at the time. It still is of course. Jonathan Swift went to Trinity. I believe a lot of Church men got their degrees at Trinity. My ancestor's brother is listed there though he did not have much money. He was later Dean of Down. It continued for generations , there are far too many Davids and Eleanors in this line ! On this web site http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/index.html I found a mention of a John Hastings Babington, which made me wonder if he was connected to Eleanor. I am probably grasping at straws! Hi Carol That was my next question. How do you access the parish registers? Are they available on line ? I'm in Australia and I'm finding my Irish research pretty difficult. Whilst I haven't found the exact relative I was looking for I think I have stumbled across a brother. Well at least that is my great hope anyway. My g g g grandmother and father had a son John Hastings Lynch and I have found reference to a John Hastings Babington ( My ggg grandmothers maiden name) and the time frame would work.....just a slim hope but maybe a piece of this puzzle that will help me unearth a little more. I'd appreciate any help / links that may be out there Many thanks Terese On Wed, Mar 16, 2011 at 7:58 AM, Carol <[email protected]> wrote: > Hi, > If you are lucky enough to find a connection..you can check out the entry in the parish register. > > www.irishgenealogy.ie/index.html > > Good Luck, Carol. > ****************************** > ATTENTION TO ALL:- Do any of you ever get to the bottom of this mail?, and do you remove the details that do not apply to your mail and change the SUBJECT LINE for best useage of ARCHIVED MATERIALS. > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message >
