Parents, John Dundon, cooper and Ellen Dundon, nee Bowler. DOWNS'S SURVEY, 1641 Richard Dundon, an Irish Papist, of Ballingadoy Parish, Coshma Barony, Co. Limerick, held 40 acres at Creavebegg. He was convicted and sentenced to seven years transportation for robbery with arms; on the evidence of an accomplice, John Brazier; "forced to commit it"; is only seventeen years of age; the only support of a widow. Reference to "the Church of Doneraile and sacrilegious....stole....two silver chalices and other silver plate....cannot see any mitigating circumstances which would render the prisoner a proper object of mercy". Townland of Ballymacnevin: Michael Dundon was the occupier of 82 acres 2 roods 22 perches. He was also the immediate lessor of 4 houses. Townland of Kilmaleery: Michael Dundon was the occupier of house, offices and lands, 111 acres 0 roods 37 perches. ROYAL IRISH CONSTABULARY There were eight Dundons in the rank and file of the RIC. Here is the first. Thomas Dundon, a Catholic, a shopkeeper from Cork, was appointed on 22 July, 1837. He was 22 years of age, 5' 8 ¾" tall. He married on 22 Jan. 1847 and was assigned to Tipperary and Cavan. He was pensioned on the 1st June, 1870 after 32 years 10 months of service. He received a pension of £36. Dundon would be an unusual name for Cavan. Could he be the same Thomas of Aghatotan, Kildrumsherdan, mentioned under Griffith's Valuation in Issue No. 1? LIMERICK CITY GAOL 1835. Thomas Dundon (440), aged 21, was tried on 24 June for Abusive Language and sentenced: To find Bail, to keep Peace. Discharged 25 June; Bailed by the Mayor. 1837 John Dundon (468), aged 26 was committed on 17 October for using false weights, beams and scales and fraudulently obtaining a quantity of oats; tried on 31 January. Verdict: Not proven. Discharged 17 October; Bailed by the Mayor. 1837 William Dundon (563), aged 37 was committed on 28 October for being drunk in the street; tried same day. Sentence: 48 Hours or pay 5/-. Discharged 30 October. Sentence fulfilled TITHE BOOKS John Dundon of Bally Geale, Adare had a holding of 6 arcres 1 rood 20 perches on which he paid £0 17s 3d.Patrick Dundon of Gurt Garriff, Adare, had a holding of 5 acres 1 rood 15 perches on which he paid £0 10s 11¼d. Patrick Dundon of Liskelly, Adare, had a holding of 32 acres 2 roods 12 perches on which he paid £5 8s 3¾d.
