I have recently received the Christening transcripts from the Cobh Diocese s of six out of the eight children my GGG Grandparents Robert Henry ROE and his wife Elizabeth (Eliza) Jane (nee TENNANT) had while they were living at Cobh/Queensland and Haulbowline Island, Co.Cork. However I have no idea where to search prior to this ca 1842 period. The only clue I have is the information on the Christenings regarding Robert's occupations as listed below: June 26, 1842: Head Constable of Police; Cobh, Regmt: Coy., Capt. Jan. 2, 1845: Head Constable of Police; Cobh, Regmt: Coy., Capt. April 7, 1847: Hospital Steward; Haulbowline, Regmt: Coy., Capt. June 28, 1848: Hospital Clerk; Haulbowline, Regmt: Coy., Capt. Feb. 7, 1854: Occupation Blank; Haulbowline, Regmt: Coy., Capt. Jan. 25, 1857: Seaman; HMS Hogue, Queenstown, Regmt: Coy., Capt. I am in the process of checking out PRO kew records but wondered re the Regmt: Coy., Capt. Information if any one on list can provide any back ground for this Regiment? Re the Head Constable of Police listings, we have already checked and he is not listed as a member of the Royal Irish Constabulary so this was not a civilian position and judging from the Regmt. Info I would have thought this was perhaps Army. However, then the position he held as Seaman HMS Hogue would suggest Navy or perhaps Royal Marines would be more likely as per the rank of Capt.? Geographically speaking he was situated at Cobh/Queenstown and Haulbowline Island through out this period of time so close to the RN installation there which would be logical if he were RN or RM. Did they have army stationed there as well? I looked up the Hogue on Sailing Ships of the RN and it has a long list of info including the period of time Robert was to have been stationed on her. Any clues or ideas most welcome! With appreciation Best regards Jane, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
