Apologies to list for the personal nature of this note. I am hoping someone from Cork City will be willing to advise me regarding a hotel where I could get a reservation meeting our needs . My husband was born in Cork City and I want to take him back 'home' for a few days as a birthday present in June. Sadly, he now has Alzheimer disease and walking isn't easy, so a location near St.Patricks Street , and the hub of things , would be good. We will want to see his ancestral home on St. Patricks HIill, go to church at St. Patricks Cathedral, visit UCC , visit several of the hospitals where he worked and just walk about the town. Any advice? I did try and write the Metropole, which I understand is now owned by Ryan hotels but the e.mails bounced. I also heard that one of the old hospitals is now turned into a hotel (painted bright yellow!) -- this might be an option as he had worked there as a surgeon many years ago. We have stayed at Jurys several times, however I was hoping to find something closer to the locations we want . . In the old days we didn't mind walking miles but now it just isn't possible. It would be restricting having to take a taxi everywhere, although I know we will have to do some of that. I will appreciate any advice at all. Thanks for your kindness. Emma, Jury's Hotel lies between Washingon street and UCC - the Maternity hospital - and I can't remember the name of it is just up the road (5 minutes) before you get to the main gates of UCC. Patrick street (the main street) is five minutes walk away...........If he went to the Presentation College - it's across the road from Jury's - almost, or used to be Patricks hill is on the other side of the bridge at the far end of PAtricks street............the hill would prove a hard walk for him. The Metropole Hotel is on a street at the end of the hill - I can't remember the name of it, just down the road from the train station and five minutes away from Patrick street - you could take a bus from outside Roches Stores that would take you past UCC.........or alternatively - there's a taxi rank in Patrick street.........if you pick the Metropole, then they'll call any taxis you want samewith Jury's though The Metropole may do mid week specials - watch out for those. I stayed there one weekend last year or the year before - only meant to for one night and got stranded because of our weather, couldn't get back to Dublin, and my three night stay cost me a fortune whereas I met people who had stayed for three nights on a special deal who paid about as much as I had for one night only - and they had a double room. The Metropole is a sister to the Hotel here in Dublin on O'Connell Street - ??the Gresham. The Maternity hospital is the closest hospital to the city centre that I can think of - there's another up behind UCC and I can't remember the name of the road..........but it's not on too a good bus route and would be more of a walk into Patrick street than any of these others. Irish buses - they aren't the same as in the States and Canada from what I've heard, here everyone uses them and you'll find the bus drivers and people as kind as can be and willing to give you as much help as possible - in general. You can buy a ticket to do you for one day and to travel anywhere within the city limits - so that if you and he feel like walking a bit, then you can, but if you're finding it too much then you can decided to stop and wait at the next bus stop for the next bus, whereas with a taxi you might not see one for a while - buses on good routes usually come every fifteen minutes or so - and most the centre city roads will have lots of buses serving them. You can buy the bus tickets at lots of newsagents - other than that it's have exact fare ready when you get on and that's confusing enough for us let alone visitors to our cities! If you'd like me to make some phone calls to Jurys or the metropole please let me know - or I have a friend who works for Dublin Tourism and they make arrangements for around the whole country - I can ask her to find out what she can for you. UCC is always lovely in the summer Emma - especially early June - the weather is always good at exam time and end of May beginning of June is that time............we'd be there not wanting to go in to exams and lining up waiting - hating the thought of the exam and hating the thought of missing out on some bit of the sun - Cork is one of the nicest places on earth and the Cork people just the same. Dear Jane, How kind of you to take the time to answer. Very Much appreciated! I too love Cork, although I was born in Canada. We visited twice and always I want to go back. Last time we even went down to Ringabella Bay where the family spent their summers. It is good to know that Jurys has a second location -- we found their rooms comfortable and more than adequate when we stayed at the Western Rd. site. Is the Metropole on the same standard? We want a good room, but hopefully not too over priced as our exchange rate is quite terrible against the Irish dollar. (or is it Euro there now too?) I still have Irish pounds left, as well as British --- am I out of luck, or will they still be convertible, or useable there? It would be very helpful if you could either make a booking for me, have your friend do it, or even simply give me an e.mail address or telephone number . I do not know why the Metropole(Ryan hotel) isn't on line. We will arrive about 2PM on June 29th and leave July 4th. You can see why I want to make my time count as it will be a short visit, and sadly probably his last one home. Thank you for telling me about the buses -- I think that will be a good option for us on some days. We want to visit Bon Secours for not only did Charles and his father both work there as Surgeons, but there is a 6 foot cross in the chapel donated to Charles life. His father saved his life at age 11 by removing a rib. In gratitude he donated the cross and we want to see this on our visit. The family worshipped at St.Patrick's Cathedral , and also St. Mary's -- a visit to those two will be necessary as well. The ancestors are buried at St.Finbar's cemetery -- Joe Reilly the custodian there has very generously given me names and directions on finding their graves. I can't begin to tell you the good things that Cork people have helped me with. Bernie Deasy of UCC archives was a God send, finding all the old school records for both my husband and his father back in the late 1800's, and willingly sending them to me in Canada. Jean Prendergast spent a lot of time telling me about the churches, the history and the city. I am so sorry that her site is no longer available -- it surely was one of the best, and she is so knowledgeable. The new owners of the ancestral home have sent pictures and invited us for a visit. This is at 16 St. Patrick's Place which now has been turned into a boarding school for an International School of English. Stephen O'Broan of Local Studies Dept., Cork City Library, Christian Brothers college and many, many others have been helpful beyond words. My gratitude knows no bounds. My husband's birthday is June 10th, and like you Jane, he well remembers having to write exams on that day and other sunny days. . He graduated from UCC, top of his class first class honors so I guess he kept his head in the books. As he is a very modest man, the family did not know anything about his scholastic achievements until I received photo copies of the transcripts. If you are in Cork during the time I will be there I surely would love to meet you and buy you lunch. Will look forward to hearing from you regarding the hotel.
