    3. Hello from the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. This is my first posting to the List- for a start am I on the right List??? >From my husbands 2 x Gt. Grandfathers Naval Record I have details of his marriage in 1843 at the COVE OF CORK. His name was Richard Russell and he married Ellen KIDNEY. Can someone please tell me what denomination/church/name is referred to by Cove of Cork and where would I look for Records. I have access to an LDS centre, but looking at their Listings for Cork I can find no reference the Cove of Cork, so have no idea what church records to look for. Richard and Ellen had a child Bridget who was born in Ireland before they moved to Portsmouth in England in about 1848. Guidance on this much appreciated I feel rather out of my depth since I have never researched in Ireland before. Thanks Eilleen Sunshine Coast Queensland Outgoing mail scanned by Nortons 2002

    3. Hi, Eileen I'm sure there are others on this List who are more knowledgeable, but I will give it a try based on my own research and family experience. If you look at a map you will see that Cork City sits on a river (the Lee?) which first flows eastward and then turns toward the south. At this point the river appears to split around a sizeable island called Cobh, pronounced "Cove" (which, of course, means that a clerk could well have spelled the location phonetically). Apparently Cobh is a viable community of its own as well as a major seaport on the Celtic Sea. To complicate things a bit further, the Port of Cobh was the point of debarkation for many emigrants. And Cobh ("Cove") received a name change about 1850 when Queen Victoria visited it. Afterwards, and until 1921, the Port was named Queenstown. So the records of my Tipperary folk, emigrating in the 1890s, state that they sailed from the "Port of Queenstown." I would make an educated guess, then, that your Cove of Cork means the community and port of Cobh (aka Queenstown) in the County of Cork. Good luck, Rosemary ----- Original Message ----- From: Eilleen E Ovenden <eilleenovenden@dnet.aunz.com> To: <IRL-CORK-CITY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, July 21, 2002 6:28 AM Subject: [IRL-CORK-CITY] KIDNEY Marriage Cove of Cork 1843 Hello from the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia.
