Dear Listers: Every time I go to my local LDS Branch, I come away more confused. Is there a simple way to find out the numbers of the films that could help in one's research? I have tried the FHL website, but can't seem to find numbers of films that way. Please help! Mary McAuliffe Nigro

You must become familiar with the Family History Library Catalog (FHLC). The easy way to do this is to get the catalog on CD from the LDS; the CD version has a search by keyword feature. Otherwise you must use the online version which I run through below. For example, suppose you wanted to know the film numbers for the 1911 census. At the http://www.familysearch.com/ page under Family History Library System click on 'Search the Family History Library Catalog for records and resources'. This will take you to the FHLC main search page. From here click on Place Search, In the Place field put Cork and in the Part of field put Ireland. From the list that comes up choose Ireland, Cork, Cork (meaning Cork City, County Cork, Ireland). You will be taken to a list of all the library items that satisfy this search. One of them is Ireland, Cork, Cork - Census - 1911; click on this and you will get a list of census items by parish. Let's suppose you want somewhere in St. Anne's. Click on this. The next page will have a command button at upper right 'View Film Notes'. Click on this and you will get to a full listing of the film numbers matched to the DED's which also lists the streets in the case of the 1911 census.
