    3. All the Church of Ireland records are being transcribed to a data base by the Cobh Genealogy Project under the auspices of Commander Allen Crosbie and his contact information and further details on the project can be found by putting Cobh Genealogy Project into any good searcher. Until a church records have been transcribed in their entirety they are not entered onto the data base, however I understand he will do a page by page search if you know the parish for a fee. Do not know what fee is involved but I am told that the moneys go to further the project. In the mid 1800s Queen Victoria came to visit so Cove was renamed Queenstown until 1922 when is was renamed Cobh. For Roman Catholic records try St. Colman's Cathedral, Cobh, County Cork and/or Mallow Heritage Centre Bank Place, Mallow, County Cork. Someone provided a contact name for Church of Ireland records for Cobh but I don't have it to hand. Someone on the list will have it. If you wish to find Cobh on a map of Ireland you will find it on Great Island in Cork Harbour. I hope this helps. Regards, Brendan Jones. ----- Original Message ----- From: Eilleen E Ovenden <eilleenovenden@dnet.aunz.com> To: <IRL-CORK-CITY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, July 21, 2002 11:28 AM Subject: [IRL-CORK-CITY] KIDNEY Marriage Cove of Cork 1843 > > >From my husbands 2 x Gt. 3. Hi, Eileen I'm sure there are others on this List who are more knowledgeable, but I will give it a try based on my own research and family experience. If you look at a map you will see that Cork City sits on a river (the Lee?) which first flows eastward and then turns toward the south. At this point the river appears to split around a sizeable island called Cobh, pronounced "Cove" (which, of course, means that a clerk could well have spelled the location phonetically). Apparently Cobh is a viable community of its own as well as a major seaport on the Celtic Sea. To complicate things a bit further, the Port of Cobh was the point of debarkation for many emigrants. And Cobh ("Cove") received a name change about 1850 when Queen Victoria visited it. Afterwards, and until 1921, the Port was named Queenstown. So the records of my Tipperary folk, emigrating in the 1890s, state that they sailed from the "Port of Queenstown." I would make an educated guess, then, that your Cove of Cork means the community and port of Cobh (aka Queenstown) in the County of Cork. Good luck, Rosemary ----- Original Message ----- From: Eilleen E Ovenden <eilleenovenden@dnet.aunz.com> To: <IRL-CORK-CITY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, July 21, 2002 6:28 AM Subject: [IRL-CORK-CITY] KIDNEY Marriage Cove of Cork 1843 Hello from the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. This is my first posting to the List- for a start am I on the right List??? >From my husbands 2 x Gt. Grandfathers Naval Record I have details of his marriage in 1843 at the COVE OF CORK. His name was Richard Russell and he married Ellen KIDNEY. Can someone please tell me what denomination/church/name is referred to by Cove of Cork and where would I look for Records. I have access to an LDS centre, but looking at their Listings for Cork I can find no reference the Cove of Cork, so have no idea what church records to look for. Richard and Ellen had a child Bridget who was born in Ireland before they moved to Portsmouth in England in about 1848. Guidance on this much appreciated I feel rather out of my depth since I have never researched in Ireland before. Thanks Eilleen Sunshine Coast Queensland Outgoing mail scanned by Nortons 2002

    3. Seeking: Michael MURPHY, living in St Ann's Shandon CorkCity, w/wife Mary SHERMAN, 1880s-c1893/5. I'd thought Michael came from Galway but haven't found him there either ... however, they are listed in Cork Library as being in St Ann's Shandon during this period. Note to parish some years ago not answered. Michael may have died in Cork as Mary SHERMAN Murphy came to the States, 93/95, where she found herself half way to Heaven, "living in the shadow of the Cathedral," in Roxbury MA. If anyone has any materials for a look-up I certainly would appreciate that. Cheers, Pat

    3. Can anyone tell me if Census Enumeration District numbers remain the same from census to census? The LDS catalogue gives details of streets associated with E.D. numbers and film numbers for the 1911 Census for Cork City but not for the 1901 census. Is it safe to assume that the same E.D. numbers for the 1901 census will produce returns for the same streets as those in the 1911? The point is I want to avoid ploughing through the whole of the 1901 films to get at the half dozen streets I'm currently interested in. 1. [IRL-CORK-CITY] Where is this mystery Cork cottage??
    2. paul tandy
    3. Dear List, After much heartbreak and expense I have finally discovered that my grandfather, Isaiah Corry Tandy, was born at a place called "Wood Cottage" near Ballyhooly, Cork on 23rd August 1869! I would dearly love to know the location of this cottage. Does any kind soul know of any old maps or guides etc. that could possibly show the whereabouts of his birthplace?? It may be near a place called Kylenahoory which is close by the edge of a wood according to a map I have of the area. Any help or advice would be really gratefully received - whatever happens I intend to visit Ballyhooly next year and see what I can find. Hope you can help me in my quest. Best wishes and good luck in your own researches Paul Tandy

    2. leoneedwards
    3. Dear List, Sorry for the cross postings, but I wasn't sure which list to subscribe to, so I subscribed to all the Cork lists I could find. My g.g. grandmother, BRIDGET RILEY, sailed to Australia from Cork on the Duchess of Northumberland in 1834. She was a single woman, presumably with no family, sailing off to a new life (how brave they must have been!). I have no idea of her life previous to that sailing, other than than she was a native of Roscommon. However, she *may* have lived in Cork for some time. I would like to know whether there are any lists of workhouse inmates in the Cork area, that are accessible online, or to any other list members. I do not know BRIDGET's parents' names, sibling names, *anything*. She arrived in Australia in 1835, took up employment as a cook at the Albion Hotel in Sydney and not long afterwards married my g.g.grandfather and had a tribe of children...etc. etc. but it is her early life I really want to find out about. Also, I would like to find out a lot about the early history of this area around the same time she was there - clothes, social life, etc. Thanks in advance, Leone

    2. My apologies for putting this to the list but would the List Owner please contact me. Compuserve have transferred we cs2000 users to AOL and have without notice changed my email address at the same time as cancelling the old one, giving me no way of unsubscribing my old address from the lists in the usual way. I knew it was coming but they wouldn't say when and I had hoped that I would be able to continue to use cs long enough to unsub. My emails will be forwarded for a few days but after that they will bounce if sent to the old address. Gosh that sounds confusing. I hope it is clearer to the reader. Many thanks Sandra

    2. Paul Meredith
    3. I am currently researching a Meredith line mostly living in & around Waterford mid-1800s thru' into late 20th century. I believe a J C Meredith 'of Cork' (b?; d?) was chief mourner at his father's ( Charles Meredith b 1840) funeral in Waterford abt 28 November 1911 and am trying to find more information about JCM. I would be very grateful if anyone may have more information on JCM or his family, descendents etc etc. I believe he would have had a sister (Frances?) who married into Coad family in Waterford area and I have information on other siblings of JC Meredith.
