Hi Everyone, I am new to this list and live in Western Australia. As a decendent of Mary Ann Russell I am researching the Russell family who arrived in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia in 1853. The following information came from their death certificates which as they died in Melbourne, Victoria is pretty good as to the names of the parents but a bit lacking as to the actual place of birth other than Cork. John Russell born about 1801 in Cork, father Edward Russell, mother Mary Corrigan. Mary Russell born about 1801 in Cork, Father Jeremiah McDonnell, mother Bridget Neeham. Their family came with them. Mary Ann born 1836 John born 1837 remained in Ireland Edward born 1838 Bridget born 1943 Ellen born 1845 Jeremiah born 1850 Looking forward to hearing from anyone who may be researching this family in Ireland Jeanette

Hello List By great good fortune I have just received some extractions from the US for TREDEGAR parish, where it would seem my Ellen Kidney came from. Would someone mind telling me which Barony and Townland it is in please. I'm not much good with this Barony and Townland business. Anyone know a good site to learn? My original request to the List re the marriage in Cove of Cork of the above Ellen Kidney to Richard Russell of the Royal Navy was very helpful in that I did get details of her marriage from the Cobh Genealogical Project. Hi listers I am trying to find information about my ancestor JANE AVIS. Jane was born about 1806, and gives her place of birth as City of Cork, Ireland on the 1851 census for Helmingham, Suffolk, England. Jane married RICHARD BRUNNING at Helmingham in 1824, and was "of the parish" at this time. Jane was protestant, and may have earned her Helmingham parish status by working there for a year, but I wonder if she could have been born in Ireland of English parents, possibly military, or whether she just came to England to work. If anyone knows of any AVIS families of this time in Cork, I would love to hear from them. I am searching for some record of the marriage of BRIDGET LEHANE b: 1864, Coolierher Co. Cork, to DENIS [?] LYNCH b: u/k. This marriage I am told took place at MAYFIELD RC Church, date u/k but I presume it was some time before 1912 as they are both shown as sponsors at the Baptism of an Aunt of mine in Ballyvourney. I have written twice to the Sacristan at the Mayfield RC Church but received no reply. Could anyone tell me please what would have been the name of the Catholic Church in that era? I believe there are 2 churches there now and both are of fairly recent construction. Many thanks Peggy Townsville Australia
Hi Peggy, Your best bet would be to check the Civil Index of Irish marriages and then order the Civil Certificate. No sacristan that I know of would have the time to check for a marriage of unknown date. Off hand I have never heard of Coolierher, Co Cork. If you are referring to Mayfield in Cork City the oldest church there is St. Joseph's (1881) and the Sacristan there is Eddie O'Mahony. Hi Jean , Congratulations on the revamped website . I noticed that the Cork Directories seem to have been removed (unless im going daft) Is this permanent ? Regards Carol (Wales)
Hello Philip, Greetings from the UK. My McCarthy's lived in Cork City in the late 1800's and then my Grandmother, Mary Ellen McCarthy, came to Manchester with her husband, John James Hallinan and first two children in 1901. I have not got very far at all with this line as not only were there very many McCarthy's in Cork at that time but also lots of Mary Ellen McCarthy's. I do know from the marriage certificate that Mary's father was Francis and I have found a birth for a Mary Ellen to Francis and Anne (nee Galway) McCarthy. I also found Francis and Anne's marriage entry. Now I would like to think that I have found my ggrandparents but I have no real proof so far that these are in fact the right ones. This is also complicated by some notes I jotted down years ago while talking to my Father about his parents when, if my jottings are correct, he told me that his Mother (Mary) was originally from Dublin, although my research has not shown this to be the case. There are several family stories which I have disproved over the years so this may be another one. It would be great to think we may find a connection somewhere with your McCarthy's so if any of the above rings a bell please let me know. I will keep your information on file. Incidentally, my mail to your own address was returned undelivered. Regards Sandra

I have met my brick wall and banging my head against it for so many years... so leaving no stone unturned I am turning to this list for help... let me repeat that... H E L P!!! Here is what I have: MICHAEL J. (JOHN?) SULLIVAN b. Sept 1859 (Parents unknown) and I cannot locate his death certificate here in the USA. I know where he died but a Sullivan born on this date cannot be found in Montana death records. The closest one is 1851 with a father; MICHAEL SULLIVAN and mother; CATHERINE COLLINS MICHAEL: Wife: JANE ANNE (LOTT/KNOTT/NOTT) SULLIVAN (Her father: JOHN LOTT/KNOTT/NOTT from England) (Her mother: BRINDLECOMB from England and died at sea) Michael and Jane's first child born in Ireland was John ? Sullivan b. May 1882 In May 1882-Sept 1883 the three left Ireland (cannot locate ship or date of emigration) had their 2nd child in PA Sept 1883. What I would like to know is: The parents of Michael. Where/When Michael was born. Date Michael and Jane married. and if possible the real maiden name of Jane Anne. Absolutely anything is more than I have right now. Please email me Huzzi@c2i2.com this way we won't hog the list. I last have him in 1908 Helena, Lewis and Clark County Montana. Most appreciative, ~Huz in Arizona,USA --=======3F323C69=======--

I have recently received the Christening transcripts from the Cobh Diocese s of six out of the eight children my GGG Grandparents Robert Henry ROE and his wife Elizabeth (Eliza) Jane (nee TENNANT) had while they were living at Cobh/Queensland and Haulbowline Island, Co.Cork. However I have no idea where to search prior to this ca 1842 period. The only clue I have is the information on the Christenings regarding Robert's occupations as listed below: June 26, 1842: Head Constable of Police; Cobh, Regmt: Coy., Capt. Jan. 2, 1845: Head Constable of Police; Cobh, Regmt: Coy., Capt. April 7, 1847: Hospital Steward; Haulbowline, Regmt: Coy., Capt. June 28, 1848: Hospital Clerk; Haulbowline, Regmt: Coy., Capt. Feb. 7, 1854: Occupation Blank; Haulbowline, Regmt: Coy., Capt. Jan. 25, 1857: Seaman; HMS Hogue, Queenstown, Regmt: Coy., Capt. I am in the process of checking out PRO kew records but wondered re the Regmt: Coy., Capt. Information if any one on list can provide any back ground for this Regiment? Re the Head Constable of Police listings, we have already checked and he is not listed as a member of the Royal Irish Constabulary so this was not a civilian position and judging from the Regmt. Info I would have thought this was perhaps Army. However, then the position he held as Seaman HMS Hogue would suggest Navy or perhaps Royal Marines would be more likely as per the rank of Capt.? Geographically speaking he was situated at Cobh/Queenstown and Haulbowline Island through out this period of time so close to the RN installation there which would be logical if he were RN or RM. Did they have army stationed there as well? I looked up the Hogue on Sailing Ships of the RN and it has a long list of info including the period of time Robert was to have been stationed on her. Any clues or ideas most welcome! With appreciation Best regards Jane, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
