Alms House Records with Ship names and dates To: CAN-SHIPSLISTS-PRE1865-L@rootsweb.com Hello everyone, I've transcribed more records from the Alms House Admission Foreigners & Nativity Records ( New York City, NY) These records apply to immigrants to Quebec, Montreal, New York, Philadelphia, New Orleans and Boston. In the early 1800's port cities in the USA bore the burden of immigration. By the time they arrived, so many immigrants were tired, hungry and poor they ended up in the City Almshouse. The new records are from the years 1855 to 1858 and include the name of the ship each person sailed on (if they remembered it), the date they arrived, the ports of departure and arrival, their age, their place of origin and more. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/ny_alms1855.htm I'm transcribing the records as best I can but the originals were only in fair shape, and some of the writing is almost illegible. They are in a very cramped hand, it seems the clerks had little room to make their entries in these ledger books, and some of the writing is so tiny that it is difficult if not impossible to read! Here is an example of the kinds of information found in the Almshouse records: In Mar 1856 John Coleman, age 15, single, from Ireland applied for relief. He told the clerk of the Almshouse that sailed from Liverpool on the Ship Ontario, arriving on 19 Dec. 1855 in New York. He didn't know the Captain's name, and had no one to vouch for him from New York City. It was his first time 'on the island" (meaning applying for relief). He was discharged in April 1856 Sometimes comments were added in the column for death or discharge dates. For example, poor Bridget Connor applied for relief on Apr 30, 1855. Bridget, 26, a spinster from Ireland told the clerk she sailed "about 20 months ago" from Tralee to Quebec. Bridget gave her ship name as Payoo or Payne, Captain O'Donohan commanding. This was her third time on the island, and the clerk recorded "Stupid" beside her discharge date of 16 Jan. '57 (If you find an ancestor with such a notation, or "insane" as I have also seen, don't be alarmed - sometimes not knowing how to add was enough to be labelled as "stupid"!) One poor man was noted as having run off and eloped to Quebec! There are many entries for individuals sailing to Quebec and Montreal, mainly from Ireland, so if you are looking for an elusive ancestor arriving in Canada in the time period 1850- 1858 you will want to check these records. The ports of arrival so far are New York, New Orleans, Quebec, Montreal, Philadelphia and Boston. Places of origin are Ireland, England, Germany, Netherlands and Switzerland, with the majority being Irish For New York arrivals, this is a wonderful addition to help with those UNindexed years. The index to the records can be found at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/ny_alms1855.htm This set of records adds to the existing records I have already transcribed and put online for the NYC Almshouse for 1819-1822 (with 1823 to 1840 to follow) starting at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/ny_alms1819.shtml I hope you enjoy this set of records; it's great fun reading and transcribing these wonderful entries! **Please feel free to forward this message to anyone you think might be interested** Lorine Lorine McGinnis Schulze -- * The Olive Tree Genealogy http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ * Naturalization Records http://naturalizationrecords.com/ * USA Genealogy http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/usa_genealogy/ otg@csolve.net or olivetreegen@netscape.net ==== CAN-SHIPSLISTS-PRE1865 Mailing List ==== Search ships passenger lists to Canada from 1820 to 1850 at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/tocanp03.shtml ==== ALSACE-LORRAINE Mailing List ==== List Information and Home page: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~valorie/Alsace-Lorraine-L.htm ============================== To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237

    2. Micheal Riley
    3. Hi to all my fellow family historians. My name is Michael and I am new to this list. I have been researching family history for some considerable time (mainly my Maternal side) I now want to research my fathers line and part of this research will involve Irish records. AS a start to using this list can I ask other members if they are researching the DOWNEY family in Cork and elsewhere. The person that I am researching is MICHAEL DOWNEY who on the 1881 English census gives is birth place as Cork County, Ireland. He gives his age as 35 which would put his birth circa 1846. He is married to Bridget who I have established had the Maiden Name (Sullivan) she was born in Kerry County, Ireland. At some time Michael left Ireland for America where he had two children 1872-1873 At some point he returned to England where I pick him up on the 1881 census with another child born in London England 1879. Any help and advice for starting my research in Ireland would be most appreciated. Regards Michael

    2. Dear Jean , As you may remember I am researching the England family in Cork and notice that your latest updates include a letter written by my ggg grandfather Michael Patrick England , which shows that he was still playing an active part in life in Bandon in 1845 ( the letters I have are earlier) . Can you tell me if this letter is at Bandon Library ? Or where I could get a copy of it to add to my collection ? Regards Carol Jones (Wales)

    1. [IRL-CORK-CITY] My Book - Green Is The Valley, Blue Are The Hills
    2. Thomas Crane
    3. Dear Friends, I am pleased to announce the publication of my book titled, "Green Is The Valley, Blue Are The Hills," on the "Fethard At Home" website. Fethard is a town in Tipperary, Ireland. The URL is http://fethard.com/crane/ Once you reach the "frame" just follow the directions. My book is on Acrobat Reader and is 283 pages long, so please give it time to download. It has been posted there for you to read "free of charge." The book is the "story" of my search for my Irish and Pennsylvania Dutch roots and the emotional impact that each of my discoveries had upon me. While my search is centered around the family names (Crane, Crean, Crehan), ( Shea), (Cuddihy, Cuddy, Cudahy) and (March, Mertz, Marz), I have included sources for genealogical information that are mentioned during the course of the telling of my story that others may find useful. The book also provides insight into the history of the coal-mining industry during the early Industrial Age and especi! ally as it applied to my family within the State of Illinois. In addition to this information, I have enclosed photos and poems that are of my own making that I hope the reader will find of interest. I hope that my book will stand as a testimony to the strength of the human spirit in the face of difficulties. Finally, I sincerely hope that people, wherever they may be, will enjoy reading my book and that they will find something of value for themselves within its pages. The only request that I make in return is that people honor my copyright by giving me credit where credit is due whether through quoting or copying from my text. I wish you all pleasant reading. God Bless, Tom Crane

    1. [IRL-CORK-CITY] FLANAGAN and MOLLOY moved to Cork during time of Young Irelanders
    2. Jacqi Stevens
    3. I am new to this list, and subscribed in hopes someone can guide me to appropriate resources to continue researching my family history. Although my family history is more involved with County Limerick, at one point, I have indication that one member and his family moved to Cork, and lived there at least during 1848 and 1849, though he evidently fled the area early in 1849. I am working on the genealogy of William FLANAGAN of County Limerick (b abt 1813, d 1893 Chicago, after "being sent" to Australia for an unknown amount of time), and Stephen MOLLOY (also spelled MOLEY, MULLOY, MALLOY and one-L spelling variants). Until I perused some history books this evening, I thought the few facts I knew about these men to be disjointed, but now I am wondering if there was a connection between these two brothers-in-law that ties in with the Young Irelanders in Cork between the uprising of 1848 and about the year 1850. Here is what I know: William FLANAGAN was born in parish "Ballygran" in Co Limerick, but for some reason was shipped off to Australia. My 80-year-old uncle, in telling this story, can only think of the well-known reason people were sent from the British Isles to Australia: convicts--in other words, my uncle presumes he must have been the black sheep of the family, a criminal. So, he lowers his eyes and mumbles a lot when he tells that story. I cannot find any records of Wm FLANAGAN's departure from England, or arrival in Australia (other than another man listed as having died there). However, at some point betw the mid 1850s and 1870s, my Wm ends up with his relatives in Chicago, IL. William's sister, Anna FLANAGAN, marries a man the family calls Stephen MOLLOY. I know very little about her except for what was saved in an old letter to her from her husband about one year after she had given birth to his one and only daughter Catherine. The letter was addressed to "Anne Moley" care of someone in County Cork, not County Limerick, where the family was from. The letter was written from Liverpool the 20th of Feb, 1849. It basically says, "Hi, sorry I'm giving you such short notice, but I'm leaving any day now on the Anglo-Americano to Boston, love you forever..." I always thought it rather calloused and unfeeling of him to leave her like that, until my husband surmised that perhaps he had some sort of reason for getting out of town so hastily. When I saw that the Young Irelanders seemed to congregate in the city of Cork (where this couple had moved), and also that several involved in the uprising were shipped to Australia, it made me wonder if William FLANAGAN and his brother-in-law Stephen MOLLOY might have been involved in some type of freedom-fighting for Ireland at that time. I know in later years, the Fenians (the secret organization), by definition, would not be publishing lists of members. But for those caught, or at least "wanted" by the British, is there any published lists or sources I could check which might list names of those supposed to be involved in the Young Irelanders? I am beginning to think there was a possibility that this might be the logical thread that ties this disjointed bit of family research together, but I would like to check some references. Any suggestions for good resources to use to follow up on this hunch? Thank you for your patience in reading this long post. Jacqi Stevens jacqi@prodigy.net Stockton, CA researching FLANAGAN (in Co Limerick), KELLY (in Co Kerry), MOLLOY (in Co Limerick), STEVENS (in Co Mayo), TULLY (of unknown Irish origin)

    1. [IRL-CORK-CITY] John Hamilton
    2. Sarah Montgomery
    3. Hello All, This is my first posting to this list: It would be an excellent Christmas present if anyone could give me any ideas on how to proceed with our worst family history problem!! Here it is: My husband's grandfather was John Hamilton. He always said that he was born in "Cork" but we don't know if this was the City or just the County. When he was in the British merchant navy he gave his date of birth as 29th April 1895. Other records (1st World War British Army and Marriage Certificate) suggest 1894 and 1896. We have not been able to find a birth registration that fits. In 1918 John visited his Catholic family, in Cork, to "try to make them see sense" as they were unhappy that he was going to marry a Protestant. He wrote a letter to his fiancee describing how they had refused to listen. The address at the top of his letter just says "Cork", but I would imagine this means Cork City. His father must have been alive at this date as he describes him in the letter as "a hard-headed Scotchman" (sic), so we think his father was probably born in Scotland. Following this "fall-out" with his family, when he married in Southampton in 1920, he did not give his father's name to the registrar! When his daughter's birth was registered in 1921 and when John Hamilton's death was registered in 1962, his name was given to the registrar by his wife/widow. On both occasions she gave a middle name, "Claude". We have not found any record of this middle name being used by John himself and so I wondered if it was his much-hated father's name? Family legend says John had two sisters, but no brothers were ever mentioned. The sisters were Eileen (Aileen?) and Kathleen. Another legend says the sisters both emigrated to Canada, but we don't know whether they were married or not. If anyone has any ideas then please don't hold them back! If anyone has any County Cork census pages hiding in a drawer then please have a quick look to see if they have any "Hamiltons" on them. Stranger things have happened! Regards and a very merry Christmas to you all! Sarah Montgomery
