    2. Elizabeth W. Knowlton
    3. Geoff, First, what religion are your people? Number 1 question for Irish researchers as you use different sources depending on the answer. Second, what sources have you used? It sounds as if it might be British army records. Great source. Where did James and Joseph die? Do you have an obituary? If they died in their own communities, surely there is one. Since they were "famous" people, I should think a dictionary of Irish biographies or some such reference work would have write ups of them. Have you contacted libraries in Cork city or Dublin or London (your name looks English) to see? I would expect that an obituary or a biographical write up would give parents. I have other ideas, but let us know what you have tried already. Elizabeth W. Knowlton Message text written by INTERNET:IRL-CORK-CITY-L@rootsweb.com >Greetings all I am new to this list and want to post my Cork interests. James DENNIS was born on 2nd June 1777 in the City of Cork. His parents are unknown. He married on 24th June 1802 Sarah LAWTON, the daughter of Hugh Travor LAWTON, and alderman of the City of Cork. James joined the British army in 1796 and had an illustrious career, winding up as Maj Gen Sir James DENNIS. He is known to have had a brother, Joseph, who became a barrister in the City of Cork. Another James DENNIS was born to John DENNIS and Anne BULLEN in Kinsale in about 1721. He pursued a legal and political career, becoming a barrister in 1746, 3rd Serjeant at Law (Ireland) in 1764, 2nd Serjeant in 1767, Prime Serjeant in 1774 and finally Chief Baron of the Exchequer (Ireland) in 1777. He was created a peer as Baron Tracton of Tracton Abbey, County Cork in 1781. He married Elizabeth PIGOTT in 1749 and died childless in 1782, providing an annuity for his wife and leaving the remainder of his estate to his nephews provided that they changed their name to DENNIS. Sir James DENNIS was granted a coat of arms. It was almost identical to that of Lord Tracton, the motto was the same, and The General Armory states that James DENNIS (later Sir James) was of the family of Lord Tracton. One of Sir James' children was given the names James Bullen. Questions-- Does any lister have any information on these DENNIS families or the LAWTON family? Can anyone suggest how I might uncover information about the births of James and Joseph DENNIS and their parents? Many thanks Geoff Ward<

    3. Message text written by INTERNET:IRL-CORK-CITY-L@rootsweb.com >Ryan's Irish Records does say that the parish registers for St. Peter's in Cork city were lost, however looking through "Tracing Your Cork Ancestors" by Tony McCarthy & Tim Cadogan (there are several sources on the web where you can buy the book) I found the following: Church of Ireland Parishes of Cork, page 62, Cork City Parishes:< If the search for your records seems a bit complicated, you might want to contact Mr. Allen Crosbie at the Cobh Genealogical Project, which does research in Cork C of I records. His email address is mervillecobh@eircom.net but you will need to send your check/cheque by mail. It costs US $30 for most searches. I found that very reasonable for what I got. Unfortunately at the moment you will receive transcriptions only as things are not set up quite yet to make copies from the microfilm. When I first wrote for two McCarthy baptisms and one marriage, I had estimated 1830s dates but did not know the city of Cork church. He wrote: "We have the records for St Anne's, Shandon; St Mary's, Shandon; and St Luke's, Summerhill, on computer and checked these." Since he did not find my McCarthys, he then began scrolling through the microfilm in date ranges: "We have searched the microfilm of St. Nicholas, Cork, and the Caulfield transcript . . . of St Finnbarr's . . . . Finally we tried the microfilm of the registers of Christchurch (often referred to as Holy Trinity) in the city of Cork and finally struck gold!" No mention is made of St Peter's, but I am sure Mr. Crosbie could advise you in an email. This year I used him again with the same family, and he found nearly a dozen more related baptisms. I will say that my requests were made after ten years of research with tombstones, more recent baptisms, marriage and death certificates, city directories, and the 1901 and 1911census. Success also depended on the longevity of one spinster and a very unusual middle name used by the family for generations. All that coupled with the new advantages of google etc on the Internet has led to me discovering three siblings who went to Ohio in the 1850s and '60s, one living descendant (thanks to World Connect), and the amusing story of one Rev John Winspeare McCarthy and his involvement with the Newark Stones. Good luck. Elizabeth W. Knowlton

I found this site for the magazine, you may have a library nearby which would have it also, I don't know the year of publication for the above edition: http://www.igrsoc.org/#Genealogist A Google search gave several links with details from The Irish Genealogist. 2. Ryan's Irish Records says that the parish records fro St. Peter's were lost in the Fourcourts bombardment and fire. A Google search for St. Peter's Church, Cork city, gave quite a few links, there may be more information re the stained glass windows and the churchyard in these. Re the church graveyard: St. Peter's Churchyard - Henchion, R. "The Gravestone Inscriptions of Co. Cork - XIV, JCHAS, No. 93, 1988, p. 110-125. It should be available at the Cork City Library, try an email requesting a lookup in the above issue of the Journal for your names of interest, I've found the library staff to be very helpful in sending photocopies. http://www.corkcorp.ie/library.html Colman Ahern, Berkeley.

    3. My ancestors were Robert Stevelly and his wife Sarah Stevelly. They were members of St Peters Church, Cork which I understand is now the headquarters of the Cork Genealogical Society. When one of our family visited Cork in about 1912, there was a large waist-high tombstone in the St Peters Churchyard inscribed: "Sacred to the Memory of of Sarah Stevelly, wife of Robert Stevelly who departed this life 11 Jan 1789 aged 66 years. Here lieth the body of Robert Stevelly, who departed this life 12 March 1795, aged 79 years." When I visited St Peters in 1980, this tombstone was gone, and the church was locked and derelict. I was so pleased that it has been reopened as the Cork Vision Center now. It was noted in 1912 that the Vestry Book for St Peters was still there and the following extracts were found at that time: " 25 April 1753, Mr Robert Staveley is appointed sidesman." "15th April 1783, Mr Robert Staveley appointed Church Warden." " 24 March 1788, the gallery sold to Mr Robert Staveley for £15." It was also noted that there was a stained glass window in St Peters commemorating the Staveley/Stevelly family at that time. I have now heard that all the stained glass was removed before the church was deconsecrated. I was wondering if anyone knows whether the above Vestry Book for St Peters has survived and its present whereabouts. Also does anyone knows where the stained glass from St Peters was taken to? I have to assume that the Parish Registers for St Peters were destroyed in 1922 although I would be pleased if someone could confirm that. The Representative Church Body Library in Dublin do not appear to have any parish registers from St Peters? Kae Lewis
