Thank for your information Sheila.Therese has followed up with some further details. Regards, Kev Young
The caretaker for CurraghKippane Cemetery is Denis McSweeney (if he is still alive). There are some records available but only for those graves were dug by the caretaker and if it was the first burial in the grave- in those days most famililies dug their own graves. I know that when my gdmother was buried there in 1945 her family dug the grave themselves! I spoke to Mr. Mcsweeney a few years ago and he was VERY helpful. Therese
Hi Keven and Sheila, My great grandfather Arthur Flint lived at 58 Evergreen Street in 1856. He was a shopkeeper. I found this info on Slaters Directory of 1856. We walked down Evergreen St in April 1995. Tiny houses with front doors opening onto the footpath. Have photos if anyone interested. Mary Ann Flint daughter of Arthur Flint born 8 Jan 1854 at Evergreen St. Christened 19 Feb 1854 at St Nicholas Church. Mary married there 10 Sep 1873 to Joseph Mickels. Half of the Flint family Protestants, the other Catholics. Chris in New Zealand.
Dear Linda Beside the information offered by Brendan, ican can add the following list of the families that lived in Harrington Row in the 1940s and 1950s in the following numbered houses: 1 Kennedy 2 Cotter 3 Weir 4 Lotty 5 Craig/Riordan 6 Madden. Perhaps your relative was related to one of them. Hi Keven, My family of O'Hallorans and O'Driscolls lived on Evergreen St. too. While they were baptized at varius times over the years at both St. Peter and Paul's and St. Finbarr's South (depending on where they happened to move that year), found out last year that the O'Hallorans were actually buried at a small cemetery out Blarney Street called St. Mary's in Currykippane. I don't have other information but perhaps others from the area were buried there as well. Unfortunately I don't have any names or numbers for caretakers, etc., but perhaps someone else on the list may have? Hello from Kev Young in Australia. My g-g-Grandmother Ellen Mellifont(formerly Ellen Byrne)lived at 3 Evergreen Street Cork for many years and died on the 19th of March 1888 while still living at that address. The family attended St.Finnbarr's (South Chapel),and Ellen married Patrick Mellifont in that church in August 1834. I am trying to find where Ellen would have been buried, which may hopefully also lead me to where Patrick was buried several years later. I have been in touch with the very helpful Joe O'Reilly at St. Finbarrs, but he is unable to help. Would anyone on the List be able to help,-even to look up a death notice in an old newspaper which might give some details? If anyone can help,I would be happy to assist you with research work in Australia. Other names of interest are MELLIFONT(Cork) and MARGARET SUTTON,daughter of Thomas Sutton and Mary McCarthy.MARGARET was baptised at St.Finbarr's on the 6th of December 1839 and married THOMAS MELLIFONT,also at St.Finbarr's,on the 16th of February 1861.Thomas(my g-grandfather)and Margaret emigrated to Australia on the ' Chatsworth' in 1862. Does anyone have a connection? Kev Young youngnt@bigpond.com
Hi Kevin, Evergreen St. is very close to St. Joseph's Cemetery on Tory Top Rd. which has a very helpful superintendent. If you have no success with him let me know and I will check the local newspapers to see what I can find. Be aware however that not all deaths at that time made to the papers. The next most likely cemetery would be St. Finbarr's on the Glasheen Rd. Evergreen Street is on the south side of Cork city, I think the most likely cemetery would be St. Finbarr's cemetery on the Glasheen Road. http://www.corkcorp.ie/maps http://www.corkcorp.ie/services/depts/dept_env03.html St. Finbarr's is also listed at this, just enter Cemeteries, Cork, for a phone number, a letter to the address listed will get to them: http://www.goldenpages.ie/Search.asp From "Tracing Your Cork Ancestors" by McCarthy & Cadogan, page 75, Records of the Graveyard: "St. Finbarr's Cemetery, Cork City's principal cemetery, opened in 1869, has comprehensive and well-maintained registers of burials for its entire history, but is the exception in this regard. Rural graveyards do not have permanent caretakers and it is best enquire locally to ascertain if a register is likely to exist." Send a letter with the details you have, if they have a record of her burial it will show who else is buried in the graveplot and when they died. Colman Ahern, Berkeley.
Hi Linda, The most likely cemetery in this case would be Rathcooney but this is by no means definite. If you could supply her surname and a more precise date it may be possible to find her death notice in the local newspaper archives. This would or should confirm the cemetery. If you are looking for records the man to contact is Joe o'Reilly His email is: oreillydj@eircom.net He will do a search on the basic records which have been computerised. He then needs to do a manual lookup for the addresses, sponsors etc. Therese ----- Original Message ----- From: <wdebmurphy@att.net> To: <IRL-CORK-CITY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, August 08, 2003 4:58 PM Subject: [IRL-CORK-CITY] St. FinBarre's South (R.C. Dear Listers, Does anyone know how to contact the R. C. chapel called St. Fin Barre's South (not St. FinBarre's Cathedral)? Many thanks. Bill Murphy
OOPS, Sorry, the photo is correct!!! I am incorrect - I believe I was looking at the photo from a different view. However, the other info is correct. There is, or was, a St. Finbarr's West. I apologize for the mis-representation. Thanks Coleman! Hello all, I just wanted to mention that, although well entended, the photo on this linked page is that of St. Finbarr's West! Along with this, the correct name of the church/parish is, Imaculate Conception aka, "The Lough Chapel" I know this is strange but, on my father's baptismal certificate it actually says "St. Finbarr's West". On one occasion when I was in Cork, I showed this to Joe ORiely and he was shocked. Even he did not know that 'The Lough Chapel' was once known as St. Finbarr's West. The South Chapel is 'St. Finbarr's' on Dunbar Street and yes, my cousin Therese is correct, it is Joe ORiely who is generous enough to do the research. (It's always nice to send a 'donation'!) I think this is the place you are looking for, contact details go to the Baptisms and Marriages link: http://homepage.tinet.ie/~southchapel/main.html a Google search gave some more links for St. Finbarr's, or the South Chapel. Colman Ahern, Berkeley.

Hi Patricia, I wasn't the one to originally give you the info but the person you need to contact is Mr. Frank Wheelan St. Peter and Paul's Presbytery Paul St. Cork. He is a very helpful person. Hello Patricia, Therese was the generous lister who shared the information and I copy it below. If you write to Frank Whelan Sacristan SS peter's & Paul's Paul St. Cork He will look up the records - avery helpful gentleman. The basic records have been computerised but info such as Godparents etc will have to be looked up manually. I'm not sure how far back the records go but I seem to remember a few from 1780 or thereabouts. Be sure to indicate all the info you require or he may just send you the basic entry. Enclose a small donation for the church Therese ----- Original Message ----- From: <PattyVWH@aol.com> To: <IRL-CORK-CITY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 25, 2003 6:35 PM Subject: [IRL-CORK-CITY] Re: IRL-CORK-CITY-D Digest V03 #46 Kind regards Sandra > > > A while back someone on this list gave me the name and address of who to > write to for church records from the 1850s for the Church of SS Peter &Paul > in > Cork City. Hi all, A while back someone on this list gave me the name and address of who to write to for church records from the 1850s for the Church of SS Peter & Paul in Cork City. I have misplaced this information and would very much appreciate it if anyone could provide it for me. Thank you, Patricia Heffernan Atlanta GA USA
