    1. My web site
    2. Jane Lyons
    3. First, I'd like to thank those people who have contacted me re my gravestone query and I will get back to you. My computer crashed and had to go to the technicians and once I got it back I had begun to work on something which is taking a lot of time. My web site began so that I could show those who had expressed an interest in a journal which I proposed publishing what I would have in the journal. However, the whole concept of the web site has now changed. Four or five years ago, I became very interested in surnames and placenames. I am not researching my own family but it was the thought of where the names were found in a county and the fact that the spellings can be different from county to county and even when we go to the General Registrar's Office we can see the way a name was spelled a hundred years ago in one part of the country being spelled differently in another part - phonetics.....and then over time, we see the name reaching a stage where it has one spelling. You can track people through the birth, marriage and death records - follow the naem through the country - see connections between one county and another. Then, when you look at the literature - you can find names in one part of the country at one time and then in another another time - moving about.I have been working with names and sorting them since that time, using anything and everything I can get my hands on or that I transcribe. My web site has now become or is becoming somwhere that I can show you what information I have and the source I got it from. I am focusing on Graveyards, Journals, and names - surname distribution I have begun to load some names to my web site - approximately 1000 for Cavan, Carlow, Laois, Monaghan, Limerick and Kilkenny so far. I give a list of names and a year and on the page I list the references I have used to present my lists of names. in some instances I have not given the full and proper reference because I have not got it at the moment, but that will be corrected next week. It is my intention to load 1000 names and references for each county over the next while, it's not the finding of the names that is a problem for me, it is the time it takes to create each page. My pages are not necessarily perfect - but I have only just begun to learn how to create web pages. The Carlow list of surnames was the first I created, in time I will go back and change the format on that one - once I have finished every county. I hope to have that done within two weeks, after that - I will begin on placenames and then after that adding another 1000 names to each list. If you read my objectives page then that will tell you what i want to do with the web site. www.from-ireland.net Jane

    3. This Cork site is the greatest for converting RC Parishes to Civil Parishes. Is there any other websites which do the same for the remainder of Cty Cork? Any for any other Cty? Thanks so much for sharing this goldmine of info.

    1. Bryan of Drinagh/Dunmanway co Cork
    2. Barbara G. Clark
    3. I am looking for Bryans of West Cork, particularly from Dunmanway and Drinagh areas. I would like to Know the birth date for Thomas Bryan m Sarah Swanton. I also look for the Birthdates for siblings of Thomas...I have only my great grandmother Ellen Bryan (his sister) b 1846. Also I have a photo of Bob Bryan , their brother(no dates) taken by Willie Choate in Momtana. The marriage date 1822 for JohnBryan and Mary Wolfe who are Thomas , Eleen and Bobs parents doesn't fit well as it doesn't jibe with family's recollections. I do not know for sure who is father of John Bryan who may be born abt 1802, just going by marriage date. There seem to have been alot of these Bryan families went to USA. Any input appreciated...Thanx ... Barb

    1. Wright/ Young/ Wolfe co Cork
    2. Barbara G. Clark
    3. In my family tree of Wm Jas Wolfe b 1720 at Cashel near Leap m Hetty Morgam ( widow Willis) I have their daughters born probably abt mid 1700's at Stouke Ballydehob or possibly in Kilmeen parish. Anne who married Wright and ..... daughter (name unknown )who married Young.... nothing more is known about them except they went to "America" which could mean USD or Canada I suppose. I would also like to know if the above Wm Jas. was married before or after Hetty as I suspect he might have been and did he have then other children perhaps born at Kilmeen parish or some other townland before he came to Stouke? Barb

    1. Victor Wolfe of Dublin/Cork
    2. Barbara G. Clark
    3. Victor Wolfe was a solicitor in Dublin who came from County Cork. I have a very small bit of tree for him but need more information to complete it and see where it links in with other Wolfes of Cork. Victor was not married and had a sister Gladys who was married to Clotsworthy. His father was Robert Wolfe m Bateman. His grandfather Wm Jas b 1847 was in RIC and died at Coolkelure I think. Any help appreciated.....barb

    1. Wolfes of County Cork
    2. Barbara G. Clark
    3. I have many lines of Wolfe for West Cork and Cork city for which I seek to fill in some gaps and see if they join up at some point. The Wolfe tree that I have extensively begins with Wm James Wolfe b 1720 at Cashel near Leap m Hetty Morgan (widow Willis)..they lived at Stouke Ballydehob. However I am now looking to see if this family is directly connected to the other 1700 and 1800's Wolfes from Parishes ......of Kilmeen, Kilnagross, Kilgarrife, Desert, Desertserges, Kilmacabea, Myross, Rosscarbery, city of Cork, Clonakilty, Whitechurch, Kinsale , Fanlobbus, Lisalee, Castleventry . Granview, etc. Townlands......... of Ashgrove, BeanHill or Knockapanery, Dromgarriffe, Cashel, Coolcraheen, Meil, Bawnlahan,Dunmanway, Dereen, Caherkirky, Knockatoigg, Ballymoney, Farrenashesherry, Knockawaddra, Inchinattin, Annagh, Kilvurra, Kildee, Saroos, Lissalane, Coolcagha, Coolkelure, Geragh. 1. Morgan/Willis/Wolfe co. Cork
    2. Barbara G. Clark
    3. Researching the Morgan and Willis families connected to Wolfes of West Cork. I have no information on the Morgan family at all but I do have some Willis tree descendants. Particularly I look for Hetty Morgan b mid 1700's or maybe later who first married a Willis of Stouke Ballydehob and when her husband died she married Wolfe. I do not have her parents or her BD or Marriage dates and am not certain I have all of her Wolfe children. I do not know if she had children from Willis or what his name was either. The other person I seek more detail about is the wife of Phillip Willis of Derryconnell. She was a Wolfe woman, (may be Esther/Hetty) but I do not know from what Wolfe family she comes, nor her birth or marriage etc dates....... They had children b 1820 onwards(East Schull Parish records) ....Anybody doing Derryconnell Willis families? ....Barb

    1. Mehigan/Wolfe of Co Cork
    2. Barbara G. Clark
    3. I am searching for anybody doing Mehigan (of West Cork) family tree particularly with a Wolfe connection. I have a Wolfe tree with two Mehigan marriages (father Wm Wolfe and son Wm Wolfe married Margaret and Mary Mehigan respectively) However I have very little data on these Mehigans at all and only some of their children listed with few dates and some of these raise questions. These Wolfe/ Mehigan were probably mixed marriages. These Wolfe families lived at Ballycommisk townland , near Ballydehob until perhaps mid 1800's. I do not know where they went to after that nor many of their descendants.I am also interested in the history of the Ballycommisk townland itself....Barb

Both born in mid to late 1700's....I have an extensive family tree for them however the birth dates are some problem with the supposed parents of Elizabeth and actual age of their son John........Barb

    2. Donnacha
    3. Civil Registration of births did not begin in Ireland until April 1864. It is unlikely that there was widespread enthusiasm for this measure, especially among Catholics who had plenty of reasons to deprive the government of yet another means of keeping tabs on them. (People in the 19th century had not yet been conditioned to having a group of total strangers, 'the government', recording everything about them for dubious purposes as we have been today). So it is not unusual to find an absence of records in the early years of the scheme. You could try consulting the Royal Irish Constabulary records. These have now been collected and published by Jim Herlihy. Details can be found at his website http://www.esatclear.ie/~ric/ Regards, Donnacha From: <LynneEwart@aol.com> Subject: Ellis Island site and also my BURNES/FORSTER family > On a different note, I have attempted to get a number of birth certificates > for my BURNES family (Robert and Harriet among others) in the 1860s without > success. 1. Ellis Island site and also my BURNES/FORSTER family
    2. I have just read on another list that 17 million names will be available on 17th April 2001 of those passing through Ellis Island between 1892 - 1924. The web site quoted is http://www.ellisisland.org/history.html for anyone interested. On a different note, I have attempted to get a number of birth certificates for my BURNES family (Robert and Harriet among others) in the 1860s without success. I know that their parents James BURNES and Fortune FORSTER were married in Cork City 1849 and that Robert was born in Shandon but their births were apparently not registered. Is this usual? My reason for wanting the certificate is that I am trying to establish James' occupation. He was a schoolmaster when he married but I think he may have joined the Irish Constabulary later on. I would welcome any help that anyone can give me - having worked on my paternal line for over 20 years which is all based in Kent where I live I am fascinated by my mother's Irish ancestory but finding it hard to do much from a distance. Hi Robert, I found the following info on Jean Prendergast's excellent site at http://homepage.eircom.net/~ridgway/index.html From an 1867 Directory: Landsdowne Park (Audley Place) Only two residents listed. Frances Murphy and Lieut-Colonel James Greaves Audley Place is at the top of St. Patrick's Hill. Hope this helps. 2. Jane Lyons
    3. I would like to ask people who have contacted me or who are suspicious of my query re gravestone transcriptions to take a look at this web page. While it is titled graveyard and for the most part does deal with a graveyard, it is more about what I do and what lists can tell me - and so therefore you - about surnames and placenames. The county that this page deals with is irrelevant, what I say or show here is exactly the same for any county in Ireland - I could have taken any one and done the same thing. . This is not my web site and when that is finished then I will give the URL. Jane http://uk.geocities.com/lyonsjane/graveyard.htm
