Hello All, Recently I came across the book "The Story of Cork" by Sean Beecher. It was published by The Mercier Press, 4 Bridge St., Cork in 1971. Mr. Beecher begins with early history of Cork 600 A.D. and spans the years up to 1917 It is written as a profile of Cork -- He has tried to reflect the personality of Cork people by showing how they, and the countless generations of Cork inhabitants have created the city. This book is only 127 pages long but there are many names mentioned, along with their occupation, address etc. I found it totally absorbing and would recommend for interests sake. It brought Cork alive for me. More Mercier Books are recommended at the back of the book. One of these is "There is a Bridge at Bandon" by Kathleen Keyes Mcdonnell. QUESTION: Has anyone read this book, and can anyone advise me as to where I might find it. Is the Mercier Press still active at 4 Bridge St.? Thank you & best regards. Emma Dundon Waterloo, Canada. P.S. There is a brief synopsis on the following Corkonians: James Barry, Dr. Richard Barter, Robert Bell, Richard Boyle Earl of Cork, Dr. John Milner Barry, Jeremiah Joseph Callanan, John Philpott Curran M.P., Thomas Crofton Croker, Con Connolly, Thomas Osbourne Davis, Thomas Addis Emmet, Rev. Hi Sherri, As befits a list that focuses on one of the oldest cities of Europe and indeed one whose monastic settlers played a crucial role in preserving European learning during the 'Dark Ages', the IRL-CORK-CITY list has a tradition of tolerance and does not impose a narrow genealogical remit. (Revisionists, if my history is wrong here I don't care and I don't want to be disabused) :-) The inquiry from Andrew I believe was bona fide and I have answered it. Yes, I agree we should use all the skills of chicanery and manipulation of the public mind that form a standard part of the armoury of the 'developers', who after all represent the new 'Dark Ages'. (Another Cork tradition has been to 'fight fire with fire'). You must become familiar with the Family History Library Catalog (FHLC). The easy way to do this is to get the catalog on CD from the LDS; the CD version has a search by keyword feature. Otherwise you must use the online version which I run through below. For example, suppose you wanted to know the film numbers for the 1911 census. At the http://www.familysearch.com/ page under Family History Library System click on 'Search the Family History Library Catalog for records and resources'. This will take you to the FHLC main search page. From here click on Place Search, In the Place field put Cork and in the Part of field put Ireland. From the list that comes up choose Ireland, Cork, Cork (meaning Cork City, County Cork, Ireland). You will be taken to a list of all the library items that satisfy this search. One of them is Ireland, Cork, Cork - Census - 1911; click on this and you will get a list of census items by parish. Let's suppose you want somewhere in St. Anne's. Click on this. The next page will have a command button at upper right 'View Film Notes'. Click on this and you will get to a full listing of the film numbers matched to the DED's which also lists the streets in the case of the 1911 census. Hi Donnacha, Uh oh! suppose the all powerful developers are lurking around the Cork City list? See someone is trying to find the CC list administrator! :o) Suggested to Colman that he post his thought of writing the editor of the Cork Examiner to the CC list. Haven't seen it yet though. Would do it myself only I had already posted. Figure if they see just a couple names then it would be assumed we were a small group that is concerned. Do you have anyone else that would post it before it is decided we can't persue the topic on the list? Have a great day! Dear listers: On the 1901 census for Fermanagh, my ancestors listed one or two children who had already emigrated. Does anyone know what could have been the reason for this? Would it have had to do with taxation, perhaps? Mary McAuliffe Nigro
Dear Listers: Every time I go to my local LDS Branch, I come away more confused. Is there a simple way to find out the numbers of the films that could help in one's research? I have tried the FHL website, but can't seem to find numbers of films that way. Please help! Mary McAuliffe Nigro
----- Original Message ----- From: Kae Lewis Subject: Re: Cork City developement > Here's hoping a way can > be found to modernise while at the same time retaining some of these all > important historical sites like the Shandon and Huguenot cemeteries. The point is that the development applications in question do not share your hopes. They are not applications to 'retain these all important historical sites' but to concrete them over. They have been presented as a fait accompli obviously in the 'hope' that no one will notice and they can be snuck through. There are some questions to which there is no 'other side'. Regards, Donnacha
Surely there must be enough land in Cork City for development and modernization that we don't have to disturb our ancestors graves!! To what price progress??!! I urge all of you with any concern over this to follow Donnacha's lead and start writing. To object you must cite the following numbers: T.P. 24795/00 for the Carey's Lane Development (Huguenot Cemetary) and TP 24932/01 for the John Redmond St. Development (St. Anne Shandon Cemetery) And the address to send these objections is: Town Planning Department, Cork Corporation, Abbey Court House, Georges Quay, Cork Regards, Sherri Delaney In a message dated 04/28/2001 7:14:27 AM Eastern Daylight Time, IRL-CORK-CITY-D-request@rootsweb.com writes: > -------------------- > X-Message: #3 > Date: Fri, 27 Apr 2001 12:35:18 -0400 > From: Kae Lewis <Kae@chartertn.net> > To: IRL-CORK-CITY-L@rootsweb.com > Message-ID: <B70F1806.924%Kae@chartertn.net> > Subject: Re: Cork City developement > Content-type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" > Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit > > I have ancestors buried at Shandon too and I am as upset as anyone else > about the possible developments. I have ancestors buried at Shandon too and I am as upset as anyone else about the possible developments. However to look at both sides of the story, I noticed when I was in Cork City how very much in need of modernisation the inner city was. Although the historical buildings and cemeteries are extremely important to all of us, this has to be balanced with the need to update the city for the good of the modern-day inhabitants and the city economy. We have all gone off to our new-world modern and vibrant cities and left our roots and history behind. Spare a thought for those that still live there amongst all the decay. Here's hoping a way can be found to modernise while at the same time retaining some of these all important historical sites like the Shandon and Huguenot cemeteries. Other large cities in Europe have managed quite well to balance these things. Lets give them a chance. Kae Lewis
Thank you Donnacha for letting us know. We will certainly be writing to them. My husband and his father and brother all worked as surgeons at the N. Infirmary AND family were connected to St. Anne's. What a travesty to disrupt anyone's gravesite! This sacrilege to our ancestors should NOT be tolerated. Our protest is the only positive thing we can do for them -- they did much for us. Thanks again. A 'developer' group has applied for planning permission to build on the old Huguenot cemetery in Carey's Lane, Cork City, and the Shandon Court Hotel (former North Infirmary) want to build an extension on the old St. Anne Shandon graveyard behind them. (While the old Huguenot Cemetary site was sold off by the Methodists over a hundred years ago, the Representative Church Body (Church of Ireland) sold the Shandon cemetary land to the hotel only recently). These applications are no doubt being pursued in the belief that no one cares. I believe they should be objected to loudly especially by the worldwide Cork genealogical community. These are some of your ancestors graves and they are being desecrated by people who if they get away with it will soon have golf courses on any rural cemetary they can get their hands on. The barbarians are as active in Ireland as everywhere else. Message text written by INTERNET:IRL-CORK-CITY-L@rootsweb.com >I have Cornelius and Mary marriage certificate from 28th April 1908 showing their place of marriage as Church of St Patrick, City of Cork. Both were shown as Shop Keepers, Cornelius of 14 Castle Street and Mary of 18 Leitrim Street. Their fathers names were Thomas McDonnell, Traveller and Jeremiah Ambrose, Farmer. Witnesses were Daniel ODonnell and Celia Canty. The 1911 census return for 96 South Main Street shows my father as the only child and Cornelius is now listed as a Commercial Traveller Hosiery. Cornelius is now 30 years old and his place of birth is City of Cork, Mary is also 30 and her place of birth is County of Limerick. Requests for birth certificates of Cornelius and Mary c1881 have been returned as no matching entry. Chris McDonnell Hertfordshire, UK.< I would search for Cornelius and Thomas McDonnell in every Cork directory available. I would also search for Thomas on the 1901 census--Cornelius is probably still living at home. 30 is a very rounded off sort of age. Looking at another census would give you another idea of their ages. Then you could rent the birth indexes and search yourself. Someone on this list can probably suggest a church to check for Cornelius's baptism, but St Patricks would probably be a good place to start since Mary did not come from Cork at all. Elizabeth
Hello fellow listers. As a new subscriber, I wanted to take the opportunity to post my interests and see if anyone shared them or could offer assistance or advice on how to proceed. My father was Thomas Christopher MCDONNELL born at 96 South Main Street, Cork City on 26th May 1909. His parents were Cornelius and Mary McDonnell (nee AMBROSE). The birth certificate shows Cornelius occupation of Traveller. I have Cornelius and Mary marriage certificate from 28th April 1908 showing their place of marriage as Church of St Patrick, City of Cork. I am researching the Quill family from Cork, names I have are John Quill born 1909 married Bridget White (Whyte) who was born Charlesville. They moved to England, but travelled back to Buttervant to have their children. Bridget was a twin, her sister was named Nora. John Quill had brothers named Denis Quill, James Quill, and one sister named Mary. If anyone has any information I would be greatful. Thank you
My apologies in advance for posting this but all rootsweb users need to know There is a virus which replicates itself by using the 'reply' function of outlook express, if you are subscribed in mail mode it will reply to all incoming messages with an attachment, ie if you make a post to the list but get a reply 'off list' with an attachment DO NOT OPEN IT. Users of other groups such as Yahoo where 'reply' goes to the list are probably OK but rootsweb users are vulnerable. My system is infected so please do not open any attachments from me, I have the latest anti virus patterns but it still got through, I will unsubscribe until the next virus update. Michael
