    3. Dear Donnacha, My ancestor, Jane Acteson, wrote her will about 1840 and said she lived in North St. Cork. Is there any way of finding out which was her house? Through her will I have names of several people in Cork: they are not relatives but I think it would be fun to list names of people of certain periods in Cork so that others may find them and/or a picture of a society could perhaps be built up: do you think it would be a popular offering of this list or am I a dreamboat? Yours sincerely, Susan Patterson -----Original Message----- From: IRL-CORK-CITY-D-request@rootsweb.com <IRL-CORK-CITY-D-request@rootsweb.com> To: IRL-CORK-CITY-D@rootsweb.com <IRL-CORK-CITY-D@rootsweb.com> Date: Monday, 15 October 2001 8:08 Subject: IRL-CORK-CITY-D Digest V01 #83

    1. Re: J Flanagan Victoria Street Cork
    2. Denis Grant
    3. If he was at Victoria Street in 1911 you should find him on the census for that year. If you do then the entry ought to give his occupation and if he was a soldier then you may be lucky enough to find his regiment stated. This is the key piece of information needed to find his military record at the PRO, Kew, near London. If he is not at Victoria Street on the census for 1911 then you will need to determine what regiment(s) were at the barracks on the date in question and check the Muster Rolls for these at the PRO or have a researcher do it for you. The information pages at 'Alphabetical Index of Information Leaflets' under 'A'(rmy) will be of further help. 1. Mayors of Cork City
    2. Frederick Bloetscher
    3. Hello All! This list has not been especially active for quite a spell; I hope my questions will change that. My GOOLD roots go back to at least the 1400s in Cork and I have been working on the family history for over 40 years. I have the list of Mayors of Cork City, (listing Goolds with Christian names that have come down for generations in our family), from William Goold, Mayor in 1443 to a William Goold (Gold) in years 1611, 1615 and 1618--30 Goolds in all. I have two questions: how can one find the parentage of these men in hopes of making a continuous link and please, what is the difference between "Mayor" and "Lord Mayor" as used in this list? If anyone has any information to help solve my dilemma, I would be very grateful. Unfortunately I will probably never make the trip to beautiful Ireland, but I do have access to the internet and public libraries. The Goolds apparently switched religious beliefs between RC and Church of Ireland, as was politically expeditious. Thanks for your consideration. Virginia in Ohio, USA

    2. Maureen Whelan
    3. I have recently established that my ancestors came from the townland of Ballybrack in the civil parish of Dunbullogue. Given that the births and marriage dates I am looking for are pre-registration, is it worth trying to contact the local church to try and locate any records? Does the townland of Ballybrack still exist? Can anyone tell me please where the local Catholic church might be in that area? Many thanks. 2. Hi Folks I'm new to the list so I thought I'd post my interests in the hope of meeting up with someone with similar ones. I'm researching ADAMS and REEDS and connected MCKENNA, O'BRIEN, LINEHAN and ROONEY. The Reeds and O'Briens came from the Barrack Street area and the Adams from Sunday's Well. Henry Reed son of Henry (an architect according to his marriage cert) married Ellen McKenna in 1852 at St Peter and Paul's. They had three children Rebecca, Mary Jane and James before Ellen died. Henry re-married in 1869 Eliza Jane Adams, a Protestant at St Nicholas' Church. Rebecca married William Linehan in 1880 from the home of John Reed - her uncle? - in Barrack Street. Those Reeds were married to O'Briens and Rooneys. Love to hear from anyone with connections. 3. I have just received Naturalization papers for John Griffin and now I finally know what part of Ireland he called home. John Griffin was born in 1823 in the City of Cork. His parents are Cornelius Griffin and Ellen Sheehan. He arrived in the US in 1849. So....what do I do now? I am so happy to have found this but immediately knew that I am stuck.....again..... Does anyone have Griffith's valuation? Would you mind looking for Cornelius Griffin please? Help....I don't know what to do now... Your advice will be very appreciated. Best of luck to all of you in your research. Isn't this an amazing journey..... Donna

I went to mgrogan's page and saw a reference to a Peirce Butler: someone had asked for info but I had deleted the request: if this is at all relevant to that person go to www.sci.net.au/userpages/mgrogan/cork/memorials/htm : and find Ightermurragh churchyard:. the inscription reads (paraphrased: Catherine: in memeory of her husband Peirce butler who did 17 April 1795 aged 56 . St Pauls was a large Catholic orphanage. I think it was on Congress St. (4th enumeration district in the NY State census). Brooklyn had a large Irish population at this time, but it had not yet been annexed by NYC so St Pauls would not necessarily appear on a list of NYC orphanages. You can order the NYState census from LDS. It has much more local info than the US census including a list of marriages and deaths that took place during the year preceding and notes on the economy of the district. Have you tried looking at New York and Brooklyn city directories for your g-g-g- grandparents? Directories are often a good place to locate urban ancestors. LDS also has Indexes and VRs for Brooklyn and perhaps Manhattan on film. You might find a record of the deaths of your g-g-g grandparents there. 3. Hello All, I made a table of graveyards in County Cork sorted by Civil Parish. The table includes listings of published transcriptions as well. It draws upon several sources and is likely the most comprehensive list you will find in print or on the net. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~colin/Ireland/CorkGraveyards.htm There are several graveyards in the table which I could not associate with a civil parish, barony and poor law union. If you have additional information please let me know. Likewise is you spot any ommissions please let me know. Cheers, Colin Ferguson

    3. I am new to this list. I hope that someone can help me. My g-g-grandfather was John Higgins. All I know about him is that he was born in Cork. (Don't know if that is City or County.) He immigrated to New York City with his parents. His parents died shortly after arriving and he went to an orphanage. He was "turned out" at the age of 15. He married Amelia (Emilie) Zengler and had my g-grandfather in 1895. My grandmother was raised devoutly Catholic, so I am assuming that my g-g-grandfather was. If not, he was probably in a Catholic orphanage. I have tried every website I can find. Does anyone have any suggestions?? I am going to write via "snail mail" to some of the orphanages in NYC. I also have ordered the 1900 census records to come to my local Family Search Center. Is there anything else I can do? Does anyone know of a branch of their family that left Ireland and "disappeared"? Any suggestions will be appreciated. Angela Camelbeek camelbeek@yahoo.com Sworn to find my ancestors!!
