Hi: Badly in need of local knowledge. I am tracing a SILLETT family and I have a record of them in Clonakilty in the 1901 census. After that, they moved to Cobh but I have no certain knowledge of exactly when. Stories passed down indicate that my wife's mother watched the "Titanic" from "the cliffs", which would put the family in Cobh in 1912 and with a good chance of appearing on the 1911 Census (I know, it's a bit of a guess). Not fully understanding the area, or the census, I sent to Dublin for the census of townland of Carrignafoy, Electoral district Queenstown No. 2, Barony of Barrymore, Parish of Templerobin. Received back a Form B (House & Building Return) and a Form N (Enumerators Abstract for a Townland). Only the head of family and landholder seem to be recorded in each of 12 houses on Form B, and Form N seems mostly about religious profession. No sign of the Sillett name, leaving me with the feeling that I don't know what I'm doing ! My question: Is it possible to go to Dublin and do a physical search of the 1911 Census for Cobh ? If such a search was successful, would there be a form which would show the complete household together with names, ages, occupations etc., similar to what I have for 1901 ? Would appreciate any help in understanding what is available. Art Pearse in Ontario
Hello Art - I think what you have are the covering sheets which seem to accompany the household census forms. I have some from Roscommon and Galway which have another sheet with all the household detailed. If these exist then you certainly should be able to obtain them from the Dublin office.
