Hello, I have been trying to research a great grandmother of mother whom I am told comes from Cork. That is all I know. I have a baptismal certificate for my grandmother that states the mother, Kate Kelly(maiden name) is from Ireland. That is all it says. My grandmother remembered (she is now deceased as well) the name of Cork being spoken of so thinks her mother came from Cork. Anyone know where I can start? The Church where my grandmother was baptised has not other records. Kate is indeed a mystery. There was an older daughter (sister to my grandmother) that we think was from a different father, but can't prove it and cannot find any birthplace for her either to get a birth certificate. Any suggestions would be appreciated. M. Shafer
Without more info it will be very difficult. You need to do as much work over here in the states first (if you are in the states). About what year was she born? When did they come to the states? Who came and did they become citizens? If so, you can obtain their citizenship papers from the National Archives, it often will give a county. If they were over 18 when they became citizens be sure to get the "papers of Intent". Woman did not file for citizenship until sometime in the 1900s, prior to that when their husbands became citizens they did also.So if it was a female look for a brother and get his papers. Look for marriage, death and birth certificates. Sometimes there are surprises-I found to citizenship for John Byrnes in Somerville Ma. at the same time frame and approx. ages. I told my M-I-L we may never figure out if it was County Meath or Monaghan. Then I found his wife's maiden name and realized the same last name was the surname for the 2 witnesses on one set of papers. They were her brothers which clinched it. Read obituaries, look at headstones. Best of luck!
