    1. How many people are interested in Dunmanway?
    2. I have been quiet and busy this last year+ taking care of myself and some personal business. But I am gearing up for some mischief. How many people on this list know they have ties to Dunmanway, Cork? How many folks would like to have their names & dates looked up in Dunmanway records so at least they can cross this town off their list of parishes to explore? Please could you respond either on this list, if it is OK with the listowner? or to me directly. One of my McCarthy-Farrell lines is from Dunmanway, with another cousin with Lordan-Crowley so I have quietly been collecting data and maps on this town, which seems to be about 5 miles NE of Drimoleague (Pete and Jim would know better). Yesterday I received an E-mail from a Patrick McCarthy who owns a Pub on Main St Dunmanway and also belongs to the Dunmanway Historical Society. First he told me that all people from Dunmanway are called DOHENYs. Why, I don't know. I need another surname like I need a hole in my head. I asked him if John Coakley is still the caretaker of St Patricks, as I have advised several people to contact him, and they are not getting responses from Ireland. So the good news, is that John Coakley is just fine, and the Historical Society could not do without his assistance. However, Patrick said, there are so many e-mails arriving, with people searching for their ancestors in Dunmanway, that "it that it might be a good idea if all the people with Dunmanway connections could make contact with one another and compare notes, you would never know what would turn up." I am working on a genealogical website to post my research, but I still have to work for a living and get away from the computer occasionally, so I could not handle all that on my own (although it interests me). What are the chances there are enough folks out there to populate a Dunmanway Rootsweb list? Would this IRL-Cork list be able to handle discussions & lookups about Dunmanway, or would everybody revolt? Is there anyone out there who would like to bvolunteer to be the administrator of a Dunmanway Rootsweb list? Are there people out there who are interested in donating their Dunmanway Family Research to the Dunmanway Historical Society for others to browse through? Please let me know your ideas. Regards, Candi McCarthy from California

    3. Candi I too would be glad to see some interchange between people with Dunmanway connections. I have been there on two occassions without success. The historical society is a great source of information, based as it is in a small café, you get to meet some of the locals over a cup of tea or coffee. One of the things that really threw me was when a local asked who I was and I introduced myself as an "O'Driscoll" the response I got was "and which one of the O'Driscoll families do you belong to". Needless to say we weren't able to get much further than this in trying to find our ancestor. Dunmanway is advertised as a small industrial town, but I found it to be a nice little village with people typical of Ireland, friendly and hospitable. The problem for peole like myself is that you never have enough time to search out the odd clues you get because of a tight holiday schedule. Details of the person I am searching are set out below Regards, John O'Driscoll - Australia 1. Daniel Driscoll. Daniel was a farmer in Dunmanway, Co, Cork, Ireland, according to the information on his son's marriage certificate. Daniel married Catherine Hurley. They had the following children: Daniel Driscoll was born in 1839. He died on 20 May 1912. All other children are unknown 2. Daniel Driscoll, "Dan" (Daniel ) was born in 1839 in Dunmanway, County Cork, Ireland. He died on 20 May 1912 in Collingwood, Victoria, Aust. The cause of death was Cardiac Disease - Heart failure. He was buried on 21 May 1912 in Melbourne General Cemetery. Daniel migrated to Australia in 1865 aboard the "Champion Of The Seas". He lived at 39 Gold street Collingwood. This small timber cottage is still intact and the small window above the front door has the sign "Driscoll Cottage" on it. On sundays following mass he would meet with his friends for a drink and a talk in his back yard. All the discussion was in Irish. His funeral drew a procession of friends in thirty horse drawn carriages following the hurst along Alexander Parade to the Melbourne General Cemetery in Carlton. Daniel married Bridget Hart [scrapbook] daughter of Jeremiah Hart (Blacksmith of Rosscarbery Co, Cork, Ireland) and Bridget Hart on 30 Apr 1876 in St Peter's & Paul's Church, Emerald Hill, Victoria Aust. Bridget was born in 1846 in Rosscarbery, County Cork, Ireland. She died on 20 Aug 1894 in St Vincent's Hospital, Fitzroy South, Victoria, Aust. She was buried on 22 Aug 1894 in Melbourne General Cemetery. They had the following children: + 3 M ii Jeremiah Driscoll was born in 1877 in Collingwood, Victoria, Aust. 3. All my Irish ancestors are from the Dunmanway area. My father, James Francis Chambers, was baptized in St. Patrick's. Also baptized or married there were his mother Johanna Mahoney, his grandparents Lawrence Mahoney and Mary McCarthy and his great grandparents, Jeremiah McCarthy and Johanna O'Donovan. My brick wall is his father Charles Chambers and his grandfather Richard Chambers. All I know about Richard is that he died young and left two small sons, Charles and Richard both of whom emigrated to America, and that his widow's name was Mary. Mary remarried and her name became Tyner. Is anyone researching the Chambers family in West Cork? Rose Roberts in Florida
