    3. Hi! Would anyone have information on Sam Maguire who came from Cork and became famous in the early part of the Twentieth Century? I am looking for info on his parents and grandparents. Wikipedia only gives info on his siblings. I believe a football (soccer) trophy was later named for him in Ireland. I would really appreciate any assistance or suggestions! I thank you in advance. Sincerely, Rob Canada

    3. Dia Duit Robert, Sam Maguire was born in Mallabraca near the town of Dunmanway in West Cork. You have probably researched the abundances of information written that is on the web. A search under Dunmanway would give you pictures of the statue dedicated to him erected on the town green. Dunmanway's Historical Society may have the information that you are researching. The web address and telephone number is readily available to you when googled. 3. Hi Rob - can't answer your question on Sam's parentage but the Sam Maguire cup is played for in Gaelic football, which is not SOCCER at all!! It seems to the outsider to be a wonderfully anarchic sport and is fiercely contested each year by the various County teams - super stuff. The country is decorated with County flags entirely and cars dash everywhere also sporting their County flags. It's great fun to be there at the time even when you have no idea at all of the intricacies of the game itself - let alone the scoring system!! All the best with your search.
