I have received some information leaflets on the Family history resources and services of the National Library that may be useful, also a listing of professional researchers. Those interested in receiving a copy please contact me off list at [email protected] and I will forward as attachments to you. I have downloaded the Parish registers by Diocese for Ireland. Kind Regards Jenny (NZ) National Library of Ireland - Dublin http://www.nli.ie/en/homepage.aspx We have quite a lot of information on the Library website re the holdings that relate to family history. A good place to start is the introductory page on the Library website: http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx This is the link to parish registers that the Library holds - it is a listing with the dates that are available for each parish and "researchers need to come in to the Library or have someone come in on their behalf to conduct research". We do not do lookups or research for people. It is arranged by diocese and the parishes are listed alphabetically within each diocese. It is useful for researchers to be aware that diocese, do not always coincide with the county boundaries of Ireland. http://www.nli.ie/en/parish-register.aspx It may be useful to refer your visitors who may not be sure of the parish origins of family members to this website: http://www.catholicireland.net/parishes/index.php The links to other websites also gives some useful sources that maybe of interest: http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-links.aspx For records related to the Church of Ireland, please see this website: http://ireland.anglican.org/index.php?do=information <http://ireland.anglican.org/index.php?do=information&id=63> &id=63 The General Register Office is the central civil repository for records relating to Births, Deaths and Marriages in Ireland. http://www.groireland.ie/ ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ------------------------------ Message: 7 Date: Thu, 25 Jun 2009 14:07:19 +1200 From: "Patricia O'Shea" <[email protected]> Subject: Re: Free availability of Irish Records - more To: <[email protected]> Message-ID: <[email protected]> Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=original Dear listers. This is a very generous and helpful offer from Jenny which is much appreciated. In addition to these records (which appear to be available for direct download from the National Library of Ireland website http://www.nli.ie/en/parish-register.aspx) you may also find estate records helpful - for example the entire index to the Lismore Papers (Dukes of Devonshire) is online and downloadable/searchable. While it is a reference document for the papers themselves, it does contain many names of tenants etc. Just enter 'Lismore' in the search box on the home page: http://www.nli.ie/en/homepage.aspx It is a large file so takes some time to download/open but well worth checking. The Lismore estate covered a great area of land in Co Cork, especially around the Bandon area, as well as in Co Waterford. Many Bandon and surrounds related entries have been transcribed (from the actual papers) and can be seen on http://www.bandon-genealogy.com/ The National Library of Ireland is a magnificent institution, with massive records on Ireland, whose website is well worth exploring. In addition, the National Archives of Ireland has a list of the microfilms of Church of Ireland records they hold - this can be found at: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy/church.html where you will also see a handy link to the RC register files of the National Library as above. Again, well worth exploring their website, which also hosts the 1901 and 1911 census project. Hope this adds to your research options. Of course, none of the actual records are yet online apart from through the Heritage Centres, which is pretty much where this discussion began! A very extensive list of Catholic registers and dates can also be found in John Grenham's 3rd edition of 'Tracing Your Irish Ancestors' The National Archives COI list does not appear to have dates but an earlier edition of Grenham (sorry not sure which one) listed the parishes existing, the dates and where they could be found. Happy to have a look if you have a specific parish.
