If a baby was the least bit ill, the priest would insist on Chrisining the child straight away for fear of the child dying without being entered into the Catholic Religion(RCs only). It was a major catastrophe if a child went to Purgotary, which has since been done away with. Also, the parents may have argued over who the baby would be named after in the familiy+so would have reg. the surname only, meaning to add the 1st name at a later date. Lots of babies were born at home so never got reg at all, as it was the hospital admin that reg them if they were born in a maternity hosp. Both were baptized in Watergrasshill, Co Cork and moved to Connecticut. I don't believe they ever lived in Boston. Both in County Cork and in this same timeframe. I'm pretty sure the children lived so not sure why this happened, perhaps pressure of time to get the registration done? Regards, Patsy - New Zealand Website: http://www.loanegenealogy.webs.com http://cdkiwi.com Sent: Sunday, November 14, 2010 11:17 AM Subject: [Irl-Cork] Birth Registrations with No First Name Greetings, My family and I have hunted for years for my grandmother's 1879 or 1880 Irish birth registration, or her baptism. snip. As I expected, her previously known siblings' civil births & baptisms turned up, in Glengarriff civil and Inchigeelagh RC locations. Then suddenly, up popped a new one, with no given first name at all: "*...* Mahoney, Female," with my grandmother's exact birth date, 19 Dec 1879, at a location unfamiliar to our family, Inniscarra. snip> Would we have found her sooner, if we had looked for unnamed babies instead of just Margarets? Who knew that a child's birth could even be registered with *no stated first name*? snip> Appreciate any comments or advice, Barb Glassel ------------------------------ To contact the IRL-CORK list administrator, send an email to IRL-CORK-admin@rootsweb.com.
