    1. Townland (mis ) spellings in OPRs

    3. Ideas welcomed on the " correct " version of a townland that appears in the Ballinhassig / Ballinhassig Goggin's Hill, Ballyheady & Ballygarvan parish as BALLINLOHO and BALLINATOHD There is a townland Ballynaouhy, also a Ballyhooleen in this parish, and if anything I think that it is the former, the only other place that I can think of is Ballinlough in southeast Cork city, just north of Douglas, but this place is far from the parish. This townland is mentioned in a baptismal entry of a HONORA McCARTHY in Oct 1875 in BALLINLOHO. Her father was JOHN McCARTHY, and her mother BRIDGET MURPHY, sponsors Thomas O' Flaherty ( the O' Flahertys were the National School Teachers in Ballyhooleen ) and Catherine Horgan. This couple married in 1873; JOHN McCARTHY and Bridget Murphy, both of Rigsdale, witnessed by Thomas O' Flaherty again and Hannah McCarthy. Also a marriage in August 1876 between JOHN McCARTHY of BALLINTOHD and HENRIETTA COLLINS of Coolatuder, witnessed by John Barry and Mary Kearney. And a son born to them, DENIS McCARTHY of Keilaminogue, baptised September 1877, sponsors Jeremiah Collins and Margaret Daly. John died in September 1900 and Henrietta appears in the 1901 census in Farlistown, and 1911 census on her own land in Skehanagh along with Denis and her other children who were born too late to be included on the parish register that appear online. I am interested in all this because I'm 99% certain that the second John is my g grandfather's youngest brother, but the witness / sponsor to the first John, Thomas O'Flaherty is also intriguing as his family is also related to ours and a Michael O'Flaherty was witness in my g grandparents, JEREMIAH McCARTHY and CATHERINE CALLAGHAN 's wedding in Ballyheady in 1867. So we have two John McCarthys from different townlands but with connections. I also am certain, from other examples, that the place mentioned in a marriage register is not necessarily the place that that person was born. As you can imagine, sorting out the McCarthy branches in this neck of the woods is quite a challenge........... Mary
