    3. Can somebody please tell me the significance of the name Callaghan McCARTHY appearing in the baptismal registers? It seems common in the 19th century in the parishes of Cork & Ross but I have never seen it around the other way, i.e. McCarthy CALLAGHAN Where the surname is used as a Christian ( first ) name. I have read that both these families have old links, especially in the southern part of county Cork. Mary

If the ancestor was born after the start of civil registration in 1864 you want to go to the General Register Office in Dublin. If the person was born prior to 1864 you need to find their baptism in parish records. If the parish was in the Diocese of Cloyne, the Mallow heritage centre can do a search on their computer index, but you should do that now and not wait until March. This is especially useful if you have no firm date of birth or location. If it was in the Diocese of Cork and Ross, I do not think they have a heritage centre up and running yet. In either case, if you know the date and parish you can search the parish records on microfilm at the National Library in Dublin. If you do not already know the date and place of birth of your grandparent, search for their death record, orbituary, tombstone and matrimonial record for clues. 3. Re. App for Passport. I don't advise waiting till you come to Ire. to apply for a passport. Just email them explaining that you DO NOT live in this country+ask them to send you the form . tell them you Are entitled to a passport, otherwise they'll bbard you with ?s. The reason I am telling you this is there is a completely different form for non-residents, which you then have to send to your own embassy or the Irish one over there. Good luck. 1. Query Re4 Cork Newspapers and Tithe Applotments
    2. Robert Meehan
    3. I have two queries. The first concerns a possible article in Cork County newspapers, which do not yet appear to be on line. For the period October, 1885 through April, 1886 is there any mention of a crime or problem in the area of Castletownroche (a town between Fermoy and Mallow). I am looking for one that may involve a John Mehigan, although I would be interested in other names too. The second concerns the tithe appolotments for the Cork County parishes of Kilavullen and, if not included in Kilavullen , Annakissa. I would like to obtain a copy of the tithe applotments for these areas. I am particularly looking for members of the Bushe family, especially Cornelius and Jeremiah who were supposedly evicted from their lands as defaulters. I understand tithe defaulters lists are not available for these parishes. Many thanks for any help you can give. Bob Meehan Dunwoody, Georgia USA

What were the children of this couple named. You did not give gfathers name so I could not search later census. I did a check in the 1901 census (due to naming pattern) for Alice Cousins in Ireland and only 5 came up. 4 were in Wexford. 3. Hi Whilst trying to establish where my grandfather's first wife, Alice Cousins, came from ,I noticed that the witnesses on the marriage certificate in 1881 were a Richard and Mary Swain . The address Alice was married from in Carmarthen Wales was the same as theirs but no mention of her in the 1881 census although Richard and Mary were there and Mary gave her place of birth as Bristol whilst Richard came from Cork Ireland . I wonder if there's anyone researching Cousins and Swains who've come across a Richard (Swain)and/or Alice(Cousins) amongst their records . I'm hoping that there is a connection between this family and Alice .I know it's a long shot but I'm trying everything . All I have on Alice is that her father was a Thomas and he was a gardener . Thanks , Buddug Hollett
