    1. Re: [Irl-Cork] Message from List Admin
    2. Ann W
    3. Hi, Chris, Welcome to the admin job! I have Barrys from Cork as well-surprise, surprise!! My Ellen Barry married Jeremiah McCarty/McCarthy in Ireland. They ended up in Boston in 1848, with five sons, aged 8 down to an infant in arms. Three more children were born in Boston -2 girls and a boy. One of the girls had a Thomas Barry as a baptism sponsor in 1852. Does any of this turn on any lights? Ann

    1. New list admin is Chris Mahoney
    2. Andrew Billinghurst
    3. I would like to congratulate Chris for passing all the tests required to take on list adminship. The bar was set very high. ;-) I have officially moved out of the chair, and Chris now takes on the role. I wish them luck and know that it shouldn't be a burden with the great group of people already here sharing their research and knowledge. Regards, Andrew

    1. [Irl-Cork] Chris suggested intros from the rest of us?
    2. Sharon Haggerty
    3. Chris, Welcome to the Cork list and I hope you don't live to regret this intro idea. My Cork ancestors left for Canada between 1810 and 1830. Most of my work has been on Haggerty (and its many variant spellings) and Bateman. These families were protestant (yes, even the Haggertys) and came from around Bandon and south and west of there. I have extracted 100s, perhaps even 1000s, of records from C of I registers from many parishes around Bandon. Many of those were submitted to can-chaleur-bay-irish@rootsweb.com in 2002/03 (and can be searched in the list archives). My Batemans came primarily from the Kilbrittain/Rathclaren area, south of Bandon: http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~sharonmh/bateman/ Bateman related families include: Ellis, Hales, Parrott/Perrott, Smith, Sutton and others. And my Haggertys from Kilmeen, west of Bandon: http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~sharonmh/Haggertie/ Documents my family brought from Kilmeen include correspondance to and from the Bishop of Cork and Ross, dated 1766. These and other documents are transcribed and there are links to them on the Haggertie webpage. I also extracted Haggerty records from Ballymodan (Bandon) registers: http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~sharonmh/Ballymodan/ Haggerty related families include Beamish, Boyd, Forbes, Shannon, Tanner and Webb. 3. I have been the list admin for many a year, and have been less engaged in my genealogy at the moment, and not done much encouragement on list for quite a period. The back-end stuff is easy, and not time-consuming, though in reflection, I think that I should see if there was someone interested in taking on the role and creating a more engaging list community. 3. OOPS been doing so much research with the 1901 and 1911 census in Canada that I typed the wrong date. He was born in 1816/18/20/22 and died in 1910..Sorry about that. His son Daniel is reported in the newspaper obituary as "being abroad" at the time of death..which I assume meant he returned to Ireland. I can find all his son James Williams children (excluding my dad??) as being born in Canada but assume all James Children were born in Ireland. Since my pension doesn't allow me to spend big hunks of cash, which some Irish sites are asking for, I can't do much from here. THANKS in advance for any help. 2. Rita, re your message, which I have copied below, how can your gr grandfather be born ca 1920 and his wife in 1830? Please check your dates and give us the facts again. If they are born in 20th century, there are plenty of records. If they are born so early in the 19th, you are not likely to find them. And have you collected EVERY CANADIAN record, including tombstones, church records newspapers/obituaries land or city directory records ship and immigration records for not only these people but all their siblings, cousins, etc., and then also the people who lived around them and/or attended the same church? Also, would all of you when answering a post not include every other message preceding it, especially whole digests. 3. Callaghan often occurs in the McCarthy families (in County Cork) as a given (Christian or first ) name. I have seen several instances. I do not recall seeing Callaghan as a given name with any other surname. I do not know if there is any connection with the O'Callaghan families. Whilst the use of surnames as given names is common in protestant families, it is not so in catholic families. -----Original Message----- From: irl-cork-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:irl-cork-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of marysimpson Sent: 30 October 2010 16:58 To: Rootsweb Cork Subject: Callaghan / McCarthy Can somebody please tell me the significance of the name Callaghan McCARTHY appearing in the baptismal registers? It seems common in the 19th century in the parishes of Cork & Ross but I have never seen it around the other way, i.e. McCarthy CALLAGHAN Where the surname is used as a Christian ( first ) name. I have read that both these families have old links, especially in the southern part of county Cork. 3. Hi Maggie & everyone else. Thanks to you all for all the emails with different advice & i can tell you exactly what i have.... Grandmother..... Birth cert for Cork. Letter from priest confirming grandmothers baptisim dated around 1920-1930's Marriage cert,in Cardiff Wales. Death cert England. My great Grandmother... 1901 census with evidence of her birth & also her first born,my Gran's sister. My parents.... All certs for England & Wales For me..... All certs England I am going to Cork to find out what i need & if i have time i want to start the process of applying & also make sure i get the following... Baptism's for gran & siblings & birth certs for the others. Try & find the marriage for Great Grandmothers marriage..... As i have the address of where my nan's baptism took place, that shouldn't be to hard to find.....I am trying to combine it all within 2 days,as that's all the time i can spare,as my hubby must go back to the UK for work & i will be returning to Poland. Do you think this is enough to get me either citizenship or passport? And as to the comment that was made, about why would i want to do that? It's because i can........... Thanks. Kaz.
