Hi Chris - Welcome! I too am looking for a Barry / Mahoney family. Bridget Barry (b. @ 1810) married Michael Mahoney (b @ 1805) somewhere in Ireland. They had several children there, and then more in Cohoes NY where they emigrated around 1845-1850. They may or may have not spend some time in Canada in the 1850's. If you see any connection, I would love to know about it. Bridget and Michael's daughter Mary is my gggrandmother, having married Patrick Toomey in NY. Thankd! I have been on varying Rootsweb mailing lists probably almost as long as I have had internet, and most likley became admin of my first list soon after this. At the moment I have seven others but they are all reasonably quiet. My own interests in Cork comes from two families, BARRY, and MAHONY (was spelt without an e. Exactly where they came from I do not know, but do have names of places in Cork where they have been at some point, hence original reason for me being on the list. Probably enough from for me for now. I think its now time to see some introductions from other people on this list, lets see who we have got here. -------------------------------------------------- Does anyone have any Canavan family? I am looking for David Joseph Canavan born about 1824, son of Denis and Bridget Canavan. His first marriage, 1846, in Montreal, Canada and his obituary in New York, 1861, both say he is from Co. Cork. Such an Irish name but so uncommon! I'm researching Geary and Feeney from Gortnaskehy, Kilworth Parish, County Cork. Jeannine North Carolina
The earliest record I have of my Keefe's is the confirmation of my GG Grandmother at St. Mary's in Newport, Wales in 1846. I am fairly certain that they left Ireland to escape the famine. I am not sure the Keefe's are from County Cork, but many of the Irish in the Wales 1851and 1861 census are from County Cork so I decided to join the list in the hopes of maybe connecting with other Keefe's who went to Wales. The family consists of the following: John Keefe born 1804 Mary Keefe (MN Lynch) born 1804 Hannah Keefe born 1828, married George Lapham in 1847 in Newport Mary A. Keefe born 1835, married Richard Nicholls in 1850 in Cardiff Bridget Keefe born 1836 William Keefe born 1839 Hannah Keefe Lapham and Mary A. Keefe eventually end up in Fall River, MA. I do not know what happened to Bridget and William Keefe. Anyone see a connection?
A friend \has asked me if I can get some information on her ggrandfather. She is planning a trip to Ireland next summer and would like to find the house he lived in and the place her grandfather was born. What she knows...Ggrandparents - Dennis O'Keefe and Mary Cofee There son Patrick O'Keefe was born 12 Mar 1864 and left for Boston, MA USA as a young unmarried man. The place she has is District of White Church, Cork. She also saw Knockahoyan. She isn't sure of the spelling. What or where is this? Also she thinks they lived on Factory Road. Does anyone have any hints for us? Thanks Priscilla
Congrats Chris and welcome. Incidently, wonder which Mahoney you belong to? Must have a chat with you some time. Grandmother was Julia Ann Mahoney. Thanks Andrew for all your hard work trying to keep us all behaving and hope you have a happy future in whatever you plan to do now. Kind regards, Mary in North Queensland Aus. where we canefarmers are going crazy trying to harvest our sugar cane with the most unseasonal rainy weather we have ever seen! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Andrew Billinghurst" <andrew@billinghurst.org> To: <iRL-CORK-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, November 07, 2010 4:07 PM Subject: New list admin is Chris Mahoney >I would like to congratulate Chris for passing all the tests required > to take on list adminship. I'll jump in and say that I'm researching Cain Crowley of Cork (c. 1831 or 1834-1894) ("Ross Carbery Town" according to his gravestone in New York, USA) He was married to Hannah Vaughn or possibly Makin. By 1859 they were in New York City where their daughter Mary was born. Subsequent children born in NY were Ann E., Hannah, George, Cain. Hannah, my great-grandmother, married John Dacey in NY about 1890 Cain's parents were possibly John Crowley and Mary (unknown) He immigrated to the US possibly c. 1841 Not much to go on, but I'd be grateful for any thoughts or connections. Brigid O'Donnell, Boston

I am interested in Thomas and Jane LOVE from west Cork (I think). They emigrated from Cork in the late 1830s or very early 1840s, with their children Elizabeth and James (born in Cork, Ireland) to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Thomas LOVE died (date unknown), and his widow Jane LOVE remarried a John PHIBBS (also from "Ireland) in Gore District (now Hamilton Ontario) in 1846. Carolyn
All my family came from around Skibbereen and Baltimore in southwest County Cork. My primary research names are Walsh, Minihane, Connolly and McCarthy. But I also have Collins, O'Brien, Harrington, Regan, Sullivan, and many others from this same area. Barbara in St. Louis, Missouri USA

Good people, Please change the subject line if you are posting about your surnames so that we will know which ones to open. And please delete all of previous postings in your new reply except for specific bits related to your new post. In digest mode, we have to wade through dozens of screens of print to get to next message. We cannot "just delete" without losing everything. Apologies to the new list owner for these remarks, and I look forward to posting my names soon. Elizabet

Hi, Chris: My Cork connections: great great grandfather William BARRY. Great grandfather Philip BARRY (~1847-1908) married Bridget FALVEY O'SHEA (widowed, Provisions Merchant, Coal Quay) at the Church of Sts Peter & Paul 1872; had 8 children. My grandfather John Francis BARRY born 1883, Blackrock Cork (christened at St. Michael's) came to the US in 1905, died in NY in 1956. Grandfather's maternal grandparents (FALVEY) moved to England ~1850s, Bath/Somerset area. Grandfather's sister Bridget married Philip SOAMES in England, daughter (Agnes Daphne) born 1913. Daphne married Eric Dunbar BRANT in 1936. Thank you for caring and taking on this task. He who must be obeyed wrote: <snip> > I think its now time to see some introductions >from other people on this list, lets see > who we have got here. My Aunt Joan reports that Bryan/Byron HEFFERNAN (born about 1845) and Julia BRENNAN (born about 1848), my GG Grandparents, might have come from County Cork. Any road, they were in Chicago by 1867. Their children were as follows: 1.) Mary A "Mollie" was born in 1867, in Chicago; she married Alfred Paul LeFEBVRE(a crockery house packer in the 1910 Chicago census) in 1885, in Cook Co. (prolly Chicago). They had 10 children, all born in Illinois. Mollie was in Pasadena, CA, by 1925, where she died in 1942. 2.) Elizabeth "Lizzie" was born about 1868, in Illinois; she married James Joseph MURPHY (a fireman in the 1900 Chicago census) in 1889, in Cook Co. (again, prolly Chicago). They had six children, including Alice Catherine, all born in Illinois. Alice was born in 1904 in Roseland, Illinois. She died in San Francisco in 1995. My Mom reports that one of Mom's aunts used to travel up to San Francisco to visit Alice, who lived in a hotel. 3.) Bernard "Barney" was born May 1870, in Illinois. Don't know any more. 4.) Ellen Cecelia "Nellie" (Mom's grandmother) was born in 1875, in Chicago. She had two children by Bill O'DONNELL, William John (born in 1897, in Chicago; died in 1968, and is buried in Los Angeles National Cemetery) and Mary Julia, Mom's mom. Mary Julia was born in 1898, in Chicago. By way of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Minneapolis, Minnestoa, she ended up in Brampton, North Dakota, where she met my grandfather, Lyle COOPER. They got married in Cogswell, North Dakota, in 1924, and moved to California with their five children some time later, where Mary Julia died in 1942. Grandma Nellie is presumed to have married Grandpa Bill (although I have not been able to find a record thereof), since there was great scandal in the family over her having divorced him. I'm beginning to wonder whether the scandalous behavior was not having married him in the first place? About 1905, in Chicago, Grandma Nellie married Martin "Mart" BRENNAN (spelled BRENNEN in some places), who was born in 1870, in New York state. They had three children, one of whom was the aunt of my mother's who visited Alice MURPHY in San Francisco. Mart's parents (Martin BRENNAN/BRENNEN and Mary HOGAN) and grandparents were born in Ireland, county/counties unknown. 5.) Peter A was born in Oct 1878, in Illinois. He was a steam fitter in the 1900 census, living in Hyde Park with Mollie and Alfred. FWIW, one of my sisters married a BRENNAN, whose forebears were definitely from County Somewhere, Ireland, and spent quite a bit of time in New Orleans, Texas, and the northern reaches of Mexico. That's my story; I'm sticking to it (until I get the evidence that proves otherwise!)... Slán, Mo! (Hanrahan) Langdon, IBSSG -- <http://xri.net/=mobang>
