    3. Thank you Andrew for a "job" well done and welcome to you Chris! I have been researching my Irish ancestors for the past 10 years or so. My Cork ancestors have given me many a brick wall! My gggrandfather Edward O'Neil was born in County Cork, July 12, 1830, and died in Boston, Massachusetts May 27, 1896. Per his citizenship papers he immigrated to Boston May 7, 1845. I have been unable to find his ship's passenger list to see if any other family mambers were with him. Edward's parents were Michael and Mary O'Neil. I never found them or any other children with Edward in Boston. Edward married a Mary Murphy February 17, 1859 in Boston. Mary's parents were Timothy Murphy and Julia O'Connell. All three were from Ireland. Yet, again I have been unable to find them on any ship passenger list. Mary became an American citizen through her husband, Edward's citizenship, so I have no official citizenship papers to confirm when Mary entered America. Mary was born in 1839. Her mother Julia O'Connell was born in 1809. Neither of their death certificates nor Mary's marriage certificate stated which County in Ireland they were born. I have been unable to find Mary's father, Timothy to know if he came to America or not. I also have been unable to locate the Murphy family in Boston before Mary Murphy married Edward O'Neil. Though Mary's mother, Julia, lived with Mary, Edward and their children until her death in 1884. Other Murphys lived in the same building or were cited as witnesses at Edward's and Mary's marriage or sponsors to one of their children's baptism. Yet again I have been unable to track them down to find a link to Mary as a sibling of hers. Though I do not have proof that the Murphys and O'Connells were from County Cork, someone once strongly suggested that they were very common names for County Cork. My ggrandfather Dennis O'Neil (3rd son and child of Edward and Mary (Murphy) O'Neil) appears to be one of the few of his 11 siblings to survive to have a family. Most of those siblings and his parents, Edward and Mary, are all buried in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Boston (Roslindale) in one family plot. I think my brick wall may last a wee bit longer. With no townland in Cork to refer to for the O'Neils and with Edward's parents having such common first names, Michael and Mary; there is little chance to pinpoint which Michael or Mary O'Neil they were!!!!! I have a few leads on cousins to Dennis, perhaps they will know more about the family. Meanwhile, I do enjoy reading the Cork list e-mails and hearing of others' discoveries!!!!!! Take care, Marcie

    3. Hi All, I am new to the list and have been searching for years to find where my ancestors Timothy Connery and Mary Sheahan originated in County Cork. Family lore is that Tim and Mary were married in the late 1840s in "a small town outside Cork city" and then walked to the boat. I cannot find them in any ship's list although I did find a Tim and Mary Conroy, which might be them. Tim's death certificate does not have parents' names and I have never been able to find Mary's death information for parentage as she married Charles McCarthy after Tim died. Finding a Mary McCarthy in the New York City archives is daunting. Does anyone have any Connery or Sheahan roots in Cork and if so, could you share information about the area(s) they came from? Looking forward to being a part of the Cork list. 3. Dear listers. Welcome to new list admin Chris - hope you enjoy 'looking after' us and that we see lots of action on our list. My Cork names are primarily LOANE/LONE from around Bandon and some from Cork city. I have extensive research on these - please see website below; and my O'SHEA/SHEA line which is from Ardgroom on the Beara Peninsula and the Beara list has been useful and interesting as well. Again I am lucky to have most of the information available on that line. My greatest brick wall is the marriage of my gggrandfather William LOANE to Jane ?? about 1833/5. After their marriage they settled at Brinny where the family remained until c1890. I have all other information on William and their children etc. just no marriage as yet. Would love to have another name to add to the research mix. Best wishes to all, Patsy - New Zealand Website: http://www.loanegenealogy.webs.com http://cdkiwi.com

    1. [Irl-Cork] MEHIGAN BUSHE KEEFE MURPHY GRIFFEN DUANE DOHERTY ROGERS JOYCE SCULLY DENNEHY BRIEN RUSSELL BOITEL O'REILLY
    2. Robert Meehan
    3. My grandparents, John Joseph MEHIGAN and Elizabeth BUSHE were both from Castletownroche, County Cork, Ireland. They married in 1894 after emigrating to Cambridge, Massachusetts around 1886.Their name morphed to Meehan sometime between the 1900 and 1910 US censuses. I have definitively traced their ancestry back to the early 1800's as follows; Robert Mehigan, wife Julia KEEFE Their son Daniel Mehigan (born 1807) who married Judith MURPHY (born 1811) in 1837 Judith's parents Garrett Murphy and Catherine GRIFFEN Their son Garrett Mehigan (born 1837) married Johanna DUANE (born 1839) in 1864. Johanna's parents were Thomas Duane and Johanna DOHERTY, married 1838 Their son, John Joseph Mehigan, born 1867. Cornelius BUSHE, wife unknown, from the Annakissa/Kilavullen area His son Jeremiah, who married Mary BRIEN in 1820 and was killed as a Whiteboy invading a landlord's house in 1823 Cornelius' son, Maurice, of Joyfield, who married Elizabeth (Alicia) ROGERS in 1824. Their son, Denis (born 1826) who married Catherine JOYCE (from Minane Bridge/Kinsale area) (born 1826), in 1846, Catherine's parents were Thomas Joyce and Catherine SCULLY, married 1823. Their daughter, Mary, (born 1846), married Edward DENNEHY in 1867 and is the great=grandmother of a recently-found cousin, Dorothea Sanderson. Edward's father was John Dennehy. Denis daughter Elizabeth, my grandmother, born 1865. Robert Mehigan is probably the son of John Joseph de Mehegan. In 1690 Christopher the O'Meighan, an officer in the army of James II, was killed at the Battle of the Boyne. His wife, Marguerita O'Reilly and their three youngest children left their home in the Manorhamilton,Ballaghmeehan area of County Leitrim for a farm called Kilcoran in the Clonmel area of County Tipperary, about 20 miles from Castletownroche. Christophers two oldest sons went to France and served in French armies. One of them, Jacques, married Elizabeth RUSSELL. Their son, Guillaume Alexander, a writer and political activist who spent some time in the Bastille, married Charlotte Therese BOITEL. They had a son, Jean Joseph. After Guillaume's death in 1766 Charlotte and the infant Jean Joseph joined the rest of the family in Kilcoran. (This was the same year that Christopher's grandson, Ned Meehan, was executed there along with Fr. Nicholas Sheehy for a murder they did not commit.) Although definitive records are not available for 1766-early 1800, I have enough circumstantial evidence to state that Jean Joseph was probably Robert's father. In my searching I have also found that St. Molaise, a Meehan, 6th century Irish saint whose cumdach or gospel book cover was guarded by Meehans through the centuries until it was donated to the National Museum in the late 1800's, was the one who banished St. Columcille from Ireland for a battle resulting from St. Columcille's copying of someone else's psalm book. The descendants of St Columcille and his followers were the founders of the Scottish clan Malcolm/McCallum. My mother was a McCallum. It's been a great hunt and I have learned so much from the members of this list and others. More importantly I have met several new cousins both in the US and Ireland. Bob Meehan Dunwoody, Georgia

This is the Rootsweb guideline and helps anyone with an interest in YOUR family names to spot connections immediately, which is, after all, the main purpose of posting!! Ray
