    1. Re: [Irl-Cork] Hourigan family
    2. Jack Crowley
    3. Horgan is the most common spelling of this name. In the cities etc it is customary to pronounce the name as Horgan However in rural areas it is generally pronounced "horrigan" even when spelt "Horgan". In my view the "horrigan" pronunciation is closest to the original name in the Irish /Gaelic language. "Respectable" folk will insist the name is pronounced "Horgan". I guess it has been long and well established by usage. However the two are anglicized versions of the same Irish family name. The man from Killorglin was of course correct in saying what his people were called. But the same people could well and very possibly did spell it as Horgan. It is very unusual to find the Horrigan spelling in Ireland today. -----Original Message----- From: irl-cork-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:irl-cork-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Mary Ellen Rossi Sent: 03 December 2010 06:24 To: irl-cork@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [Irl-Cork] Hourigan family Hi Maureen!! 3. There's a Thomas Lordan on the irishgeneology site-Cok+Ross area. Go to churchrecords on that site. When you click on the name, it will give you a little info, then click on the name again+more info comes up. Remember that transcribers only copied what they saw, in thier opinion, so you shouldn't limit yourself to one spelling. Maggie the Dub

    1. [Irl-Cork] Death notice's
    2. Margaret Doyle
    3. Yes, you're right, for the general public in Eire, a death notice is placed with a news paper, simply to let friends+relatives know what time the funeral will take place. Obits are written for the famous+ journalists and such. This is why death certs (GRO) + church records(National Library + irishgeneology ) are so much in demand. Maggie the Dub

While the typical death notice in a 19th century Irish newspaper is often little more than a name and place of burial, there can often be found other snippets of information, such as age, address or townland, occupation, cause of death. For a look at typical death notices from 1757-1899, see http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~aherns/ahobits1.htm Also, be advised that the listings in the Irish Death Notice Database are not limited to obituaries, but include mentions of death by accident, suicide, homicide, and execution. Deaths which necessitate a hearing by a coroner's jury can be qute detailed as to who the perosn was and how they came by their demise. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Dennis Ahern | Irish Death Notice Database ahern@world.std.com | http://www.irelandoldnews.com/obits/ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
