From The Cork Constitution, 5 November 1886 - CORK MUNICIPAL REVISION. ---------- TWO PARNELLITE M.P.s DISFRANCHISED. ---------- His Worship the Mayor yesterday resumed the revision of the Municipal Franchise. Messrs. J. C. Blake, solicitor, and Thomas Babington, senr., solicitor, sat as legal assessors, and Mr. H. Barry represented the Town Clerk. Messrs. Babington and Babington, solicitors, with Mr. Holmes Crofts, appeared for the Conservatives. Mr. W. Murphy, solicitor, with Mr. J. O'Brien, for the Nationalists. The direct list was gone through, and the cases which were allowed stand disposed of, and a few claims were then decided. Thomas Beston, George's-street, objected to by the Nationalists, was struck off, it being stated by Mr. Murphy that he did not occupy the whole house. The applicant did not appear, and therefore the name was struck off. Rev. G. P. Quick, Homeville, Sunday's Well. Rector of St. Peter's Church, was objected to by the Nationalists. Mr. Bernard Skinner appeared, and proved that Mr. Quick was entitled to a vote. The objections were disallowed. The Revision then terminated. Mr. W. W. Babington said that as the revision was now virtually closed he begged to thank his worship for the courteous and impartial manner in which he had conducted it all through. Mr. Murphy said it was needless to say that he seconded what Mr. Babington had said with the greatest pleasure. They had got through the work very smoothly. There was no friction on either side, and were extremely thankful to the Mayor for his kindness during the revision. Mr. Babington--There was the greatest impartiality and courtesy shown by his worship. (Hear, hear.) The Mayor was much obliged to both gentlemen. They had got through the work smoothly and harmoniously, and also very rapidly. He had to thank his assessors, too, for their courtesy and the assistance they had given him. The court then adjourned until Monday, when the list will be gone over to class the names. [to be continued]

Hello, You will likely be able to locate the birth registrations for all children born after 1864. Do you have any birthdates of those children? Index films for Irish civil registration are available at your local LDS family History center. The James BARRY and Catharine CONDON family probably lived near Bantry, Ireland (possibly in or near the town of Skibereen) in the early 1800s. Their two sons, Thomas and William, were born there, as was their older daughter Ellen. Their youngest, Catharine BARRY, was born at Stepney, Middlesex, after the family moved to England about 1850 to find agricultural work. Thomas married there, probably about 1863, to Ellen TOOHIG. She bore him two sons, then died, possibly in childbirth. The entire family (that I know of) relocated to America (Wisconsin) not long after, in the mid 1860s. Ellen, who had met and married Paul SHEEHAN, remained behind, at least until her son, Timothy SHEEHAN, was born (in or near London) in July 1968. Once the Barry's were settled in Lafayette county, WI, the men engaged in mining. Later, they mostly turned to farming. William BARRY had a family farm near Independence, Buchanan county, IA. Paul SHEEHAN and Ellen BARRY eventually farmed in Wright county, IA. Catharine BARRY married Patrick D KELLY and they farmed in Lincoln township of Black Hawk county, IA. If this bit of history rings any bells as matching some element of your own family, please drop me a note. Kevin in Missouri

Tracey at tracey74@optusnet.com.au writes: << It lists his birthplace as Kilvilogil, Cork.. <snip> Can anyone shed some light on the real spelling? >> Tracey, I've been playing with this for a few days, but haven't found anything which might be suitable. The ending looks like it might be "loghil", which is a suffix found on several townlands in Ireland......but not any in Cork, or any that are closer than Killoghil in Co. Clare. If the certificate is hand-written, perhaps one of us on the list could take a shot at it - if you could somehow let us see it (not through Rootsweb, of course). Otherwise, I don't think I can give you much help. Do you have placenames in Ireland for any of the family of John Tobin now? I might be able to browse maps for areas around such places and find something. But, for now....... - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Pete Schermerhorn, in the glorious Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts

Hi just wondering if any fellow Researchers , may have an opinion or indeed have come across the following situation . My GGGrandfather was Married in April 12 1846 In St Finbarrs , Cork City , on His Marriage entry his Father`s occupation is shown as a Labourer as was His Bride`s ( Margaret Mahoney) Fathers occupation was also shown as a Labourer .On their Marriage Cert Margaret used an X to sign Her name whereas Nathaniel did not. What i`m thinking is this it`s seems dubious to me that a Labourer from a Labourers Family as was his Brides Family , would Marry in St Finbarrs Church before they emmigrated ( His Bride was 3 months Pregnant at the time) , it seems to me they would`t bother , and they would be to Poor. The other thing was Nathaniel not using an X by his name, i wouldn`t think he would be able to read or write if he was a Labourer from a Labourers Family at that time. I`m thinking that the Families were from a Farming background , not a Labouring background. Any Opinions Welcome !. Regards Ron Lanning
