    3. Hi to all I am currently trying to put together a family of LANNIN from CORK for a lady who is not computer literate or knows much about the family, just her own family which goes back to grandmother and I am hoping some one out there my be related or can help us The family of Lannin OZ apparently split and some some stayed in Victoria and some to Western Australia which is where my friend comes into the picture. The family in question NATHANIEL LANNIN married Elizabeth JARMAN not sure if in Ireland but his kids namely Richard born c.1842 he married Grace Elizabeth Mossop 1864 Victoria George born c.1840 he married Jane Kent 1867 South Aus Susannah born c.1833 married Robert McPherson 1854 Victoria The above kids came to Victoria Australia individually. On Susannah's marriage certifcate she stated her parents were Nathaniel and Elizbabeth Lannin nee Jarman and so did her brother Richard & George but to add to the confusion we now have a Nathaniel Lannin born to William Lannin and Esther English and he states on his marriage he was born Cork !! I have tried the IGI for CORK and other counties with out success and I know that Ireland had his fire and lost a fair bit of their records but I am hoping there maybe some one on the list who can help me. Before I forget, the place of birth Susannah said was SKIBBEREEN I have never heard of this county or parish. I am a little familiar with Irish research as my own MURPHY's came from there Many thanks for anything Elaine & Carole

    3. Wonderful, thank you Pete! You've fired up my imagination. :-) I can see that when I get myself onto that side of the world, I'm going to have to visit Cork and the island of Cobh to see it for myself. One day! :-) I wondered what you meant by "Discovery Map 81", so did a Google search and now I know - see http://www.mapsworldwide.com/mwwlive/m9632.htm. As it happens, my sister is heading for the UK and France for a holiday at the end of next week and keeps asking me if there's anything she can get for me while she's over there, so I will ask her to look out for this! Don't take any notice of the spelling, I tell the story of a grave that we saw in Ireland which had about 20 people's names on one headstone, obviosly the same family , and they had at least five different spellings of the name Cummins. 1. Skibbereen origin for James BARRY, Catharine CONDON?
    2. James BARRY and Catharine CONDON were born about 1809 to 1819 (depending on the source) and moved their family from Bantry Bay to England around 1850 to get work. Their older son, Thomas was not with them in 1861, but I found a Thomas BARRY in the London area about the right age and it gave his birth place as Kibbercen, Ireland. Anybody think that is likely to be Skibbereen, which is only about 12 miles from Bantry? Anyone know whom I could contact to check parish records in that area of Cork? Best wishes, Kevin Kelly in Missouri

    3. Hi everyone, I posted a few months ago about my ancestor, Catherine Catson, who according an IGI entry was born in "Cork, Cork", but according to her daughter's birth certificate was born in "Kingstown". Just wanted to post with an update with the new information I've received today. I was contacted a week ago by a distant cousin, also in NZ, who found me through the NZ Rootsweb group. He has posted a pile of documents to me, and amongst the papers is a copy of Catherine's Irish birth certificate, located by a professional researcher hired back in 1992. According to the birth certificate, Catherine was born on 08 March 1876, in Tuberlooneen. The birth was registered in the district of *Queenstown*, Cork - well, I can see how several years later her father could get that name wrong, LOL!! The father was George CATSON, of Tuberlooneen; the mother Mary, nee ALLBERT. George was recorded as a pensioner - by my reckoning from his grand-daughter's 1891 birth certificate (where his occupation is listed as a seaman), George would have been around 48 at this time. I've yet to investigate the various links posted by Dennis Ahern back in May in response to my initial inquiry, but now that I've got some definite data to work on I will go and do that now - thanks, Dennis! It all just got too hard back then, but now I've got something more concrete to work with. :-) Can someone tell me where Tuberlooneen is/was in Cork? I've tried looking for it on Multimap, but it doesn't recognise the name. Nor does Google have any references for it. :-( Something else I've noticed just now... in the box labelled "Name and Surname and Maiden Surname of Mother", it says only "Mary Allbert" - would this be considered a 'normal' entry for a married couple, or is this telling me that they were likely not formally married? Printed in the box below the hand-written names are the words "Inion" and "Formerly", and "Formerly" is crossed out. I don't know what this means, but I'm suspecting that she wasn't married to George! The birth was registered by Margaret Catson; I don't know how she fits into the family, but maybe she's George's mother or sister(-in-law?). Something to investigate another day. :-) Thanks for listening to my babble! Any information you can share about this matter will be greatly appreciated. Regards, Wendy Howard Kaiwaka, New Zealand

    3. I am still as far away from finding my people as I was five years ago. Their names are so common and I have to idea where to proceed from here. In the Griffith's Valuation I found James Connolly- Ballinaspigmore, St. Finbar's, Cork, also William Connolly, Bandon Rd., St. Finbar's Cork. Both of these names are similar to my people but the spelling of Conley is different. William Conley was born in 1828. I think he was literate. Would people have been spelling their names in different ways at that time? Would it matter? I also found a Margaret Cullen , Barrack St., Kinsale. Other names I am researching are Mary O'Brian/O'Brien and Michael Cullen. All as far as I know from Cork. Where do I go now? Do I order films from the LDS for all of these areas? I'm going to Cork in September but am only there for four days so don't expect to have time to do much research. Looking for: Michael Cullen, Margaret Cullen b. 1842, Elizabeth Cullen b. circa 1836 ,Mary O'Brian, James Conley/Connolly/William Conley/Connolly/ wife of James Anne, perhaps maiden name of Murray. 3. Hi Wendy, I have lots of ancestors who were born married and died in Queenstown County Cork but I never heard of Tuberlooneen. The only thing I can suggest is that it could be deciphered as Templerobin which is one of the two civil parishes that make up the town of Queenstown. Regarding the entry in the birth cert for the name of the mother I have never seen anything like *Inion* printed in that column. The mother's present name goes in the top space and under the printed word *Formerly* her maiden surname is written. The relationship of the informant to the child was in most cases in the informant column. You might consider applying for a Photcopy of the birth cert from the GRO at http://www.groireland.ie This would eliminate any mistakes which may have been made in transcription. Regards, Brendan. > >> According to the birth certificate, Catherine was born on 08 March 1876, in Tuberlooneen. 2. Jan Vernon
    3. Hi List, I have just joined this list in order to learn more about County Cork. I have now traced my family to Youghal and County Cork. The family name is Chadwick and I have found information that Bishop George Alexander Chadwick was born at Youghal on 10 October 1840 and baptised at St Mary's Youghal on 23rd Nov 1840. The bishops father was Hutchinson Chadwick. As Hutchinson Chadwick is not a common name I was wondering if anyone on the list has come across this name before? Regards Jan Vernon Sydney, Australia

    3. Hi Jacqueline. Might I suggest you go to these villages, find a place to stay and ask around. In March I was fortunate to stay in Bandon, where one of my lines traces to, and the Bed and Breakfast hostess was absolutely wonderful. She located two living relatives for me to visit - I had not known of them nor had they known of the New Zealand connection. So ... it's worth using local knowledge. May not always work but you just never know. Best of luck and have a great trip. 1. English famiily from Mitchelstown area
    2. Jacqueline R. Harrington
    3. Looking for the English family from Counties Cork, Tipperary, and Limerick, in Ireland We will be taking a trip to Ireland next month. We would really like to visit the places where my husband's ancestors lived. What would really be awesome would be to meet other descendants of those ancestors. Places identified so far are: Parish of Kilbehenny and Anglesboro, County Tipperary, in the Diocese of Cashel and Emly, and Mitchilstown, on the boundary of the counties of Cork and Limerick. Other places could be Glenacurrane, Kilglass, and the Barony of Cashlea. Surnames mentioned in the English family baptismal and marriage records found in the Parish of Kilbehenny are: Hanrahan, Dunne, Noonan, O'Brien, Smith, O'Sullivan, Lonergan, O'Neile, and Murphy. These people were probably family members or at least neighbors. We would be grateful for any information that would supplement the information below. Edmund ENGLISH was born about 1817 in County Cork, Ireland according to his death certificate. On Tuesday, 7 March 1848, Edmund ENGLISH, son of Edward and Mary ENGLISH, married Mary HANRAHAN (age 19) in the Parish of Kilbehenny and Anglesboro, County Tipperary, Ireland. Mary HANRAHAN of Glencurrane, daughter of Timothy HANRAHAN (a farmer) and Catherine NOONAN, had been baptized on 5 Jul 1828, in the Parish of Kilbehenny and Anglesboro, County Tipperary, Ireland, and listed as sponsors were Elizabeth NOONAN and James DUNNE. Edmund (a.k.a. Edward) and Mary ENGLISH immigrated to the United States between 1874 and 1884. Mary HANRAHAN died on 27 May 1884 in 1291 Palimar St., Ward 18, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, at age 55 years, 10 months and 22 days. She was buried on 1 June 1884 in Section T, Range 5, Lot 27, in the New Cathedral Cemetery, 2nd and Butler, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Edmund ENGLISH died at age 75 years on Friday, 26 August 1892 in 1330 Broad St., Ward 18, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. He was buried on 30 August 1892 in Section T, Range 5, Lot 27, in the New Cathedral Cemetery, 2nd and Butler, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mary HANRAHAN and Edmund ENGLISH had ten children listed below: Catherine J. ENGLISH was baptized on 28 Jul 1850 in the Parish of Kilbehenny and Anglesboro, County Tipperary, Ireland, and listed as sponsors were Michael ENGLISH and Margaret ENGLISH. She immigrated about 1873 to the United States. On Monday, 24 April 1876, at age 25, Catherine J. ENGLISH married Bernard CONWAY in Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, Front and Allen, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. Witnesses were Ellen HARDING and Cornelio CONWAY. Catherine J. ENGLISH died in March 1917 at age 66 years. She was buried on 21 March 1917 in Section N, Range 3, Lot 36, in the New Cathedral Cemetery, 2nd and Butler, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Maurice ENGLISH was baptized on 10 August 1852 in the Parish of Kilbehenny and Anglesboro, County Tipperary, Ireland, and listed as sponsors were Maurice ENGLISH and Catherine HANRAHAN. Maurice ENGLISH died on 23 June 1929 in Episcopal Hospital, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, at age 76 years, 10 months and 13 days. On his death certificate his father's name was listed as Edmund and his mother's name as Ellen. He was buried on Wednesday, 26 June 1929 in Section T, Range 5, Lot 27 in the New Cathedral Cemetery, 2nd and Butler, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Ellen ENGLISH may have been born about 1855 in County Cork in Ireland. Probably before 24 April 1876, Ellen ENGLISH married Michael HARDING. This is a supposition based on the premise that she was probably the Ellen HARDING that witnessed her sister, Catherine's, marriage in 1876. Her husband, Michael HARDING, was born about 1849 in Ireland and died in the United States in October 1883 at age 34 years. He was buried on 11 October 1883 in Section T, Range 5, Lot 27, in the New Cathedral Cemetery, 2nd and Butler, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. John ENGLISH was baptized on 29 November 1855 in the Parish of Kilbehenny and Anglesboro, County Tipperary, Ireland, and listed as sponsors were Andrew O'BRIEN and Margaret SMITH. He immigrated in 1880 to the United States. On Wednesday, 14 September 1904, at age 48, John ENGLISH married a 36 year old lady named Catherine in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. She may have been a widow named Catherine BAGNER, whose first husband had died about 1895. John ENGLISH was widowed before 16 April 1910. He died on 14 April 1928 in 613 W. Clearfield St., Ward 43, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, at age 72 years, 4 months and 16 days. He was buried on 17 April 1928 in Section E, Range 7, Grave 43, in the New Cathedral Cemetery, 2nd and Butler, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. An unnamed baby of Edmund and Mary ENGLISH was baptized on 24 December 1857 in the Parish of Kilbehenny and Anglesboro, County Tipperary, Ireland and listed as sponsors were Benjamin MARTIN and Catherine HANRAHAN. This could be an eleventh child. But, since the birth dates listed in records available in the United States have been quite unreliable, this child could be either Ellen or Michael for whom no records in Ireland have been found. Margaret ENGLISH was baptized on 3 December 1859 in the Parish of Kilbehenny and Anglesboro, County Tipperary, Ireland, and listed as sponsors were Thomas HANRAHAN and Catherine O'BRIEN. She appeared on the census of 10 June 1880 in 712 Richmond St., Ward 18, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, as a servant in the household of Michael and Ellen HARDING (her brother-in-law and sister) who appear to be running a boarding house. Margaret ENGLISH may have married a Mr. BAGNER. Edward Michael ENGLISH was baptized as Edmund ENGLISH on 3 March 1862 in the Parish of Kilbehenny and Anglesboro, County Tipperary, Ireland, and listed as sponsors were Maurice ENGLISH and Ally HANRAHAN. He immigrated between 1878 and 1880 to the United States. On Thursday, 2 June 1892, at age 30, Edward Michael ENGLISH married Catharine RODGERS (age 25), daughter of Frank and Catherine RODGERS, in Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, Front and Allen, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, Edward died at age 80 years, 7 months and 10 days on Monday, 12 October 1942 in 613 W. Clearfield St., Ward 43, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania,. He was buried on 16 October 1942 in Section E, Range 9, Lot 43, in the New Cathedral Cemetery, 2nd and Butler, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Edward ENGLISH's wife, Catharine RODGERS was born between 1861 and 1871 possibly in County Tyrone, Ireland. She immigrated between 1880 and 1888 to the United States. Catherine died on 6 November 1924 in 613 W. Clearfield St., Ward 43, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, at age 57 years, 10 months and 27 days. She was buried on 10 November 1924 in Section E, Range 9, Lot 43, in the New Cathedral Cemetery, 2nd and Butler, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania., Michael ENGLISH was born on Thursday, 10 December 1863 County Cork, in Ireland, according to his marriage license. No baptismal certificate has been found for him. He immigrated between 1880 and 1892 to the United States. On Wednesday, 25 May 1898, at age 34, Michael ENGLISH married Catherine GLEASON (age 28), daughter of Martin GLEASON and Joanna SHEEHAN, in Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, Front and Allen, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. Witnesses were his brother, John ENGLISH, and her sister, Elizabeth GLEASON. Michael ENGLISH died on 19 December 1932 in 425 Salmon St., Ward 18, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, at age 69 years and 9 days. He was buried on 23 December 1932 in Section O, Range 6, Lot 28, in the New Cathedral Cemetery, 2nd and Butler, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania., Michael ENGLISH's wife, Catherine GLEASON, was born between 1869and 1874 in Ireland. Her death certificate lists her date of birth as 1 December 1874. She immigrated in 1890 to the United States. Catherine GLEASON died on 23 November 1939 in 425 Salmon St., Ward 18, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, at age 69 years. She was buried on 27 November 1939 in Section T, Range 5, Lot 27, in the New Cathedral Cemetery, 2nd and Butler, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mary ENGLISH was born on Monday, 1 August 1864 in Kilglass, Kilbehenny. Mary ENGLISH was baptized on 2 August 1864 in the Parish of Kilbehenny and Anglesboro, County Tipperary, Ireland, and listed as sponsors were Maurice O'SULLIVAN and Hanora LONERGAN. She immigrated in 1880 to the United States. She appeared on the United States Federal Census of 9 Jun 1880 at 1933 Tulip St., Ward 31, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, in the household of her brother-in-law, Bernard CONWAY, and sister, Catherine J. CONWAY. Mary ENGLISH married Albert FRANTZ Sr. about 1895. Alice ENGLISH was baptized on 22 September 1867 in the Parish of Kilbehenny and Anglesboro, County Tipperary, Ireland, and listed as sponsors were Michael O'NEILE and Catherine MURPHY.
