    1. Re: IRL-CORK-D Digest V05 #191
    2. Hello Susan, I was interested in your surnames for County Cork, because my gg grandparents were Thomas Mullins and Mary Reardon. My problem has been that their family lore place of birth does not seem to pan out in reality. However, this family first showed up in Merthyr Tydfil in Glamorgan, Wales, on the 1871 census. My great grandfather William Mullins as a 10 year old, born in Ireland, and his sister Catherine aged 8, also born in Ireland. As you can see, their births came before civil retgistration making it very difficult from a birth certificate point of view. However, I did another clue to work from, there was a brother Daniel born in Dowlais, so was able to obtain his birth certificate which gave the mother's maiden name of Mary Reardon. I do know that Reardon can also be mistaken for Riorden, according to who is hearing the information. However, the clue of Kanturk might be useful, it is a case of clutching at straws I suppose. Catherine died as a teenager, and never married, so I cannot find any clues there. However, my Greatgrandfather married a girl whose parents came from Pembrokeshire, also in Wales, so no Irish clues there either. So, now we have William Mullins and Susanna James. Her parents were John James and Jane Morris. John James said to beborn in Tenby, Pembrokeshire, and Jane Morris was born in Narberth in Pembrokeshire. I have been able to trace the Morris family, but the James family is also very difficult. The only connecting names here is that John James father was Thomas James, and William Mullins father was called Thomas Mullins. So, the name Thomas could come from either side I suppose. My own grandfather was called John Mullins and he was born 1896 inTylorstown in the Rhondda Valley. He had a brother called Thomas, also William. Sisters were Elizabeth, called Lizzie, and Mary. There was also another brother called George, but he died as a young lad in Tylorstown. Sorry to go on a bit. If any of these names feature in your branch of the Reardon's or connecting families, perhaps we have the beginnings of a working relationship. Unfortunately, no American links have come down through the family for me to work on. All the best, Maureen Jenkins Rhondda, Glamorgan, Wales.

John Leary born in 1808 married to Mary Margaret Boughan Children Patrick b 1833, Michael b. 1834, Margaret 1836, John 1839 and Mary b 1842. Mary married Timothy Hayes 1860 in Rathbarry. There are so many Leary/OLeary families in that area. I had someone search the church records in the National Library. Your information is too early for civil registration. You could also write directly to the church... if you are lucky they will respond back. Andrea

    1. O'Connors born in Cork 1840s
    2. Zizek, Candi (DHS-DCDC-IDB)
    3. I am seeking any info on O'Connors or Connors in Cork. My Thomas O'Connor married a Joanna Donovan about 1842. She was 17 years his senior, but we do not know where they came from in Cork. They had three sons born in Cork: John Timothy b 1844 Thomas b abt 1846 David b abt 1850. David was rebaptised in Merthyr Tydfil Wales at age 3. I am from John and have no clue what happened to the other sons, but the parents died abt 1895 at #39 Quarry Row, Merthyr Tydfil, and son David was in attendance at their deaths. We have family stories about Davie being in the British military, and about his being a farmer. He married a Kenkins, but was never around for the censuses. I know this is a stretch, but I have to try for O'Connor connections in Cork. Regards, Candi in California

    2. J. Wiehn
    3. Hello, My Cork roots are from Meekin, New Market and Rosscarberry. My family names are Collins, & Riordan. I am emailing the Cork-L List members, who have Waterbury, Connecticut Irish ties/roots, to see if you can go thru your old photos to see if you have any that could be used in a future book on the Irish of Waterbury, Connecticut... We are looking for photos that show local waterbury Irish who may have been fireman, policeman, clergy, nuns. businessmen. etc.... Photos that show irish waterbury events such as parades, picnics, fraternal organizations meetings, or irish family gatherings. I am willing to pay for copies of photos. Also I can send you a CDROM disc that you can add scanned photos to if that is easier. Or just send us an attached file of the photo. Please email and I can tell you what dpi the scanned photos need to be for use in a published book. Or you can send us the photos and I will have them scanned and sent right back to you. Postage will be reimbursed. I'm also looking for stories on how/why your waterbury irish relatives came to Waterbury. Stories on thier life in Waterbury...... I have been given some great leads on Waterbury Irish from Author Neil Hogan of CIAHS. He has written some great stuff for the CIAHS newsletter. If you have seen the arcadia photo books this may be the style I will be doing the book in. Or as several people have suggested I should try to emulate the "Italians in Waterbury" book and make it more text based with some photos\ Drop us an email........... Thanks! John W.
