HI, I was in Ireland in March. We visited Kanturk. It is worth visiting. I am not researching Winkles, but the people there are wonderful. I am researching McCarthy. I met the local butcher, Jack McCarthy. He was wonderful. He had the ledger from his business, and there was a family tree in it. Going to Ireland is great. Everyone is so helpful. I am seeking information on the following family from Scart, Kildorrery, Co. Cork. Patrick Myers/Meyers married Ellen Haly/Healy in Kildorrery on 24 February 1824. Patrick was from Scart Townland. They had the following offspring: Ellen, 8 October 1824 - Sponsors: Thomas Myres/Margaret Cotter. Catherine, 10 May 1827 - Sponsors: John Haley/Mary Myers. Margaret, 2 January 1830 - Sponsors: John Coughlan/Mary Haley. Mary, 26 August 1832 - Sponsors: James Cotter/Catherine Walsh. William, 25 November 1835 - Sponsors: William Walsh/Catherine Walsh. Mary Walsh emigrated to the United States before 1861 and married a Thomas Irving in Minnesota. It should be noted that there were two other Myers families in Scart at the same time and they appear in the Tithe Applotment Book for 1836. Any information about this family would be greatly appreciated. John Myers, Cave Creek, Arizona.

I have updated the Ireland books section of my website. New books have been added in all sections: Parish History, Local History, Genealogy, History, Fiction. New volunteers have also been added to do lookups in the books. You can find the links by going to the URL below my name. At the top of my homepage, under Ireland, click on Ireland Books. That will take you to the Ireland Books Discussion Mailing List website. At the bottom of that page, you will find links to both the Parish History Books and to the Ireland Book List. If you would like to add books to this website, just use the convenient forms at the bottom of all the book pages. If you would like to volunteer to do lookups, just email me off list. If your email address has changed and you are a lookup volunteer, please write me off list, giving the the book category and title. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

I have Leary's in my family also... Mary Leary b 1842 in Dundeedy married Timothy Hayes in 1860. Her parents were John and Mary Margaret Boughan who was from England. They has a son John b in 1839. There are so many Leary's in Cork... not sure if there is a connection. Andrea In a message dated 11/3/2005 7:02:29 A.M. Ray at Rfitzg@aol.com writes: << I'm curious as to the townlands on the other three sections of the crossroads. My guess is Carhoo or Oldcastletown (NE), Farrahy (NW) and Meadstown (SW). >> Ray, I was hoping that no one would ask that question..... but I guess it was wishful thinking. I can answer 2/3 of the question: Oldcastletown is in the NE (Carhoo is to the NE of Carhoo Cross Roads, about a half-mile N of Kildorrery), and Kildorrery townland is in the SW (Meadstown is to the south, just below Kildorrery tld. and also on the W side of the R 512). The problem is in the NW. Here is what I wrote to Jan on this matter: "But the NW is a jumble of a few long, thin townlands, or pieces of townlands, and the printed names have become smudged over the copies of copies of copies which these Index maps have probably undergone since the 1840's. The Arch. Inventory books for Cork show all of the townland boundaries, but they are not named. Normally, I can compare with my TI maps and the Discovery maps and figure it out. And if an unknown townland has an archaeological site within it, I can cross-reference the site number next to the dot, back to the main section of the book - and that will tell me the townland name. Unfortunately, the bits and pieces in the NW quadrant of Kildorrery have no archaeological sites indexed, so I can't use that method, either. There is a possible way out, by carefully measuring and calculating the area of the townland(s) in question and comparing with the acreage of townlands in the parish from the Townland Listings. But I'm not about to get that fussy with this." So, I think you'd need someone with a six-inch map of that area (Co. Cork, no. 18) to be sure of the NW quadrant. I don't think I even want to guess <gr>. Sorry. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Pete Schermerhorn, in the glorious Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts

Thank you Padraig. I appreciate your checking the phone book for me. I did not have a particular party in mind. Rather, because my ggrandfather Maurice Mahony was never head of household (Griffith's and Valuation records up until 1912 when he died), I assume that the townlands recorded on his children's birth certificates must have been places where Maurice lived but not as head of household. I am thinking he lived with relatives. There were many Mahonys in Leitry when Maurice lived there. I was hoping someone might still be there with that surname. I am assuming that Leitry is how the name of the townland is spelled now. Both the birth and Baptismal records used the spelling "Leitra" on each record. At least the spelling was consistent, unlike the spelling of Ceancullig, where my family also lived at one time - everything from Caencullig to Counkilla to Kancuillea.
