I have just read a glowing review in History Ireland of the Atlas of Cork City. This book may be useful to genealogists as the review says that the book has 38 chapters from 59 contributors as well as over 200 maps. It looks as though the chapter called The city in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries would be useful. I have tried to buy the book but it is sold out in all of the bookshops in Cork city but stocks are due back in this week. The publisher is Cork University Press and they have a website at http://www.corkuniversitypress.com
Hi Nancy, I am extremely interested in your book Cork National School Registers. Both of my gggrandparents were NS teachers in County Cork, Behagh NS, Ahakeera NS. Their names were John and Mary Buckley. I cannot find your book on ebay, can you tell me how I can locate it? I would love to have this book. Thanks Peggy
I have an old letter with a relative's address on it. The only problem is that the ink has faded since it was written in 1919, and also the handwriting is fancy and difficult to read. All I can make out for sure is one of the following addresses: No. 6B ______?_______ Terrace, Cork, Ireland or No. 613 _______?____ Terrace, Cork Ireland There is only one word in the blank and it might be--but not necessarily be--Louth. It definitely ends in the letters "th". Are there any "sleuths" there in Cork City that might have a clue? I have been looking for these relatives for over 30 years and I really want to know. Thank you so much. Peggy
I am searching for the family of John Lawlor (or Lawler), who was better-known by the nickname "Jack". He was originally from County Carlow, was born in about 1880, but was living in the City of Cork, County Cork, Ireland by about 1910. He apparently remained there for the rest of his life, and died in about 1935. He was married and had 4 children: John, Cornelius, Mary & Patrick (all born between about 1902 and 1911). John and Cornelius died as children, but Mary (born December, 1909) and Patrick (born September, 1911) apparently lived into adulthood. He was a member of the Royal Engineers (along with his brother Michael), and family stories indicated that he owned some type of shop or commercial establishment in the City of Cork. Any assistance with this would be most appreciated. Peggy
Hello again, listers I'm trying a new angle here. There's a possibility that the Catherine FLANNIGAN listed below is the sister of my 4xgr-grandmother, Mary Ann SALISBURY, 1819, Waterford, Ireland. Are there any FLANNIGAN researchers on the list who might have some information on the family listed below? If so, I would really like to make contact with you. Birdberyl@aol.com asked: >Is anybody researching O'Keefe family in Fermoy from 1850 - 1920. In Ireland this surname is almost always spelled O'Keeffe. If you search the IrelandOldNews.com website for O'Keeffe and Fermoy, you will find results where these two words appear on the same page, though not always in the same context. For example, an Arthur O'Keeffe of Ballymahon is listed as a juror in the Fermoy Quarter sessions in January 1864. See http://www.irelandoldnews.com/Cork/1864/JAN.html#18 for this report which also includes a Roger O'Keeffe and John Ahern bringing suit against the county surveyor over repairs to the road between Tallow and Cork. And see http://www.irelandoldnews.com/Cork/1878/JUN.html#19 for a report of an O'Keeffe playing a piano solo at St. Colman's College, Fermoy. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Dennis Ahern | Ireland Newspaper Abstracts Acton, Massachusetts | http://www.IrelandOldNews.com - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Hello List! I found an entry on the Cardiff 1901 census JOHN O'BRIEN where he states his place of birth as CLONAKILLY I thought that perhaps this was really CLONAKILTY, but have since found CLONAKILLY as a registration district of Cork. Could anyone clear this up for me? I'm unsure whether CLONAKILLY still exists or whether it really is CLONAKILTY - Very confused! Julie

Hello, listers I'm still on the lookout for information on the surname SALISBURY in Ireland. My 4 x great-grandmother was Mary Ann SALISBURY, b. 1819, Waterford. She married Robert MORLEY in Montreal in 1838 but I don't know when she left Ireland. Can anyone help me, please, by letting me know the location (townland, parish etc, if possible) of "Finchey Island, Co.Cork"? I ask this because "Samuel Riggs son and heir of Edward Riggs of Finchey Island, Co.Cork, Ireland, Esq" was admitted to the Middle Temple 1680May10 - source: Register of Admissions to the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple from the Fifteenth century to the year 1944, published 1949 Butterworth & Co (Publishers) Ltd, Temple Bar, London. I believe his father Edward may have been Edward Riggs, Esq, M.P., who is referred to as "the Second Edward Riggs of Riggsdale" (Rigsdale is a townland in Dunderrow Parish, co.Cork). If so, this Samuel may well be the Samuel Riggs of East Gully, whose Will was abstracted 1687Nov01 in the Cork and Ross Diocese - source: Indexes to Irish Wills, 5 vols, by W. Phillimore and G. Thrift, originally published 1909-20, reprinted 1970 Genealogical Publishing Co.Inc, Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Gully was apparently a townland in the civil parish of Ballymodan, which was under the Poor Law Union of Bandon, therefore not too far from Rigsdale (which is just outside and to the south-west of Halfway). Samuel dying would square with the fact that, when Edward's son, Rt.Hon.Edward Riggs of Dublin, P.C., M.P. was admitted to the Middle Temple 1698Oct1 he was described as "second son of Edward Riggs", because Rt.Hon.Edward Riggs's elder brother Allen Riggs of Dunmanway, Co.Cork would have become the eldest son and heir on Samuel's death. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ <@¿@> Geoff Riggs \~/ Chepstow, South Wales, UK ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (@¿@) Searching for the Missing Links in the (~) RIGGS Surname Study www.riggs.org.uk ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \\\|/// Please let me know if \\ ~ ~ // you happen to spot one ( @ @ ) riggs@one-name.org ----oOOo-(_)-oOOo---- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Hi Julie, Below are some contacts re church records for Clonakilty. I notice from the Diocesan Website www.corkandross.org that the Clonakilty parish charges 20 Euro for each cert. I'm not sure whether this covers a search. It may well be the price charged when exact details are provided by you. Regards, Brendan Jones. Rev. Dear List! After year's of research frustration, I think I have located where my husband's family hailed from. The Census entry definitely looks like the spelling of CLANAKILY, though 'Google' will only come up with CLONAKILTY - Could anyone help? Thanks in advance, Julie Blackman
