Many thanks to those who took the trouble to explain my relationships! I know the child of my cousin is my second cousin, but didn't realise my grand-father's brother's grand-daughter would also be my second cousin. This all gets very complicated! Sheila

Jean, I was told to use: http://www.foreignmoney.com/. They are very good and the cheapest around. It only costs $10 for the conversion. Jean - I always send a personal check to Ireland. They have no trouble cashing it at their banks....There are sites on the net where you can convert USD to Euros to determine the amount of the check in Euros. Can anyone help? This may sound like a silly request but, through Friends Reunited, etc, I have located someone who is the grand-daughter of my grandfather's brother, so can anyone advise me what our relationship is? We have a massive family reunion planned for May (she's coming to the UK from Florida, where she now lives) and I would love to "blind her with science"! Incidentally, our grandfathers originated from Cork. Thanks for any help. Sheila Bransfield
Hello, Sheila, The granddaughter of your grandfather's brother is your second cousin. If she has children, they are your second cousins once removed . The name is Michael Buttimore living in County Cork, the parish of MacLoneigh, Annahala West. I had a search done by the Mallow Center with no results. Can someone suggest which parish priests I should contact to find a marriage record for a Michael Buttomer (various spellings) and Julia Maloney. It probably took place about 1835, and I have no idea which religion. Also, what would be considered an acceptable donation? Thanks for any thoughts on this. Jean, In the past I've sent personal checks denominated in US dollars and they were cashed. I anticipated that their bank probably skimmed some of the amount as a commission/conversion fee so I added several dollars to the amount. Hello Margaret: I have always offered $25. It's probably the minimum. The Mallow Center covers only a part of County Cork. How I regret that. Regards, David F. O'Keefe Houston, Texas

Hello Brigid: Here's a suggestion. Find out what the parish church name in his place of birth was. Write the church for information about his Baptism. Include an offering of at least $25 for the parish secretary's time. There are various ways of finding out what the parish church in the town is. You can ask the list. There are books about Irish parish churches in large genealogical libraries. Good luck. David O'Keefe Houston, Texas

Any connection to Cain CROWLEY of Cork? According to his gravestone in Calvary Cemetery, Woodside, NY (d. 25 Dec 1894) , he was born abt. 1831 in "Ross Carberry town, County Cork". His wife was Hannah ?VAUGHN. His children were born in the US: Mary E. b. abt 1859, Hannah, b. June 1866, George, b. Jun 1868 and Cain, b. abt 1872. I would love to pick up their trail in Ireland, but I don't know where to start. His death certificate gave no helpful information to add to what is above. Hi Beryl: Thanks for your reply. Along with many other Irish roots searchers, I wish you eventual success. David
Hello, I was interested to read about Patrick O'Keeffe. I am trying to trace any relatives of my gtrandmother, Cecilia Bridget O'Keeffe who married Newman Bailey in Fermoy, Co.Cork in 1896. Her father was Maurice O'Keeffe but I have no details of birth etc. - I don't suppose he is connected with Patrick in any way. Good luck with your researches. Beryl
