My gut feeling is that he was Irish -and that he or his family were possibly from Cork. Can anyone help? Any clue - no matter how tiny would be appreciated. Many thanks Beverly

    1. LESLIE family of Cork - also Falkiner
    2. beverly .
    3. Hi List! I am a new subscriber. I am researching the family of my direct ancestor MATTHEW LESLIE born in 1755 in Cork. He was the son of CHARLES AND ANN LESLIE. Matthew had three brothers, CHARLES HENRY LESLIE, JAMES LESLIE and JOHN LESLIE and three sisters - one of whom married Samuel FALKINER and was the mother of a Sir Riggs Falkiner. I am trying to find out more about Matthew Leslie who died a fabulously wealthy man in India in 1804- having assets in India and Ireland. I wonder if his brother is the CHARLES HENRY LESLIE who founded the Gunpowder mills in Ballincollig. It is said that this Charles Henry Leslie bought out his partner in 1804 - and, by coincidence, that is the year of my Matthew Leslie's death and his will leaves his brother Charles a handsome legacy. Could it be the same Charles? Is anyone researching this family or can anyone tell me more about the family of Charles Henry Leslie of Leslie's Cross, Wilton (founder of the Gunpowder Mills and later Leslie's Bank) so that I might determine whether there is a link between my Matthew Leslie and his brother, Charles HenryLeslie. Thanking you Beverly

    3. > Here is an interesting link of advertisements published > in the Boston Pilot: > > http://infowanted.bc.edu/ If you do not find what you are looking for, it doesn't mean it isn't there. This database is only an index and if you check the pull-down menu that shows what years have been included, you will see there are gaps. This is an ongoing project at BC and some day it will be complete, but in the meantime don't forget this series is available in book form at some public Libraries and available for purchase from the New England Historical and Genealogical Society. Each volume is indexed by names mentioned in each ad, both searcher and searchee, as well as related persons, such as next-of-kin and even lodging keepers where mail can be sent, and also by placenames in Ireland and in countries where people have gone, including Australia, Canada, and elsewhere. See http://tiara.ie/missing.html for more information about the Search for Missing Friends series. -dja

    3. While the card at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~aherns/normanahern.jpg looks like it says "Limerick Lane Cork Ireland" the street index for Cork City at http://www.corkcorp.ie/maps/ doesn't show any such street. I also checked a list of obsolete street names for Cork City and there's no Limerick Lane. -dja

    3. I occurred to me later, Denis, that long before main routes between principal towns and cities were given numbers for identification, such roads would be simply referred to, for example, if one were in Cork, as the Limerick Road, even the part leading out of the city, so might your Draftee's father have given his address as : Limerick Road, Cork, but in transcription the word 'Road' was omitted. I don't know, if there was such a road being part of Cork city. **** Reply to LIST only, please. Thank you. 3. Just back to genealogy from an unavoidable leave of absence... My heart skipped a beat when I started to read this one. I thought my wall had toppled, what a shame! At this point, can someone tell me if there were ever any records keep of whom an indoor servant would have been indentured to, in Limerick or Cork? (My ancestor was native of Cork, indentured as an indoor servant, and tried in Limerick assizes. Thus, I have always assumed he worked in Limerick, erred and caught in Limerick.) Any ideas, anyone?
