Hi Sheila There are a few churches in Heene- I'll find out if there is a Catholic one. Hello Listers, Is anyone researching the surname NIHEN (variety of spellings ... NYHAN)? I have a Daniel NIHEN (c. 1801 - 1871) family who left County Cork for Wales (Aberavon) circa 1850. I can trace him in Wales until his death in 1871. Daniel was married to Nancy (c. 1812 - 1876) or "Ann" (Unknown). Children born to this couple were Cornelius (1833), Johanna (1834), William (1835), Ellen (1837), and John (1843). I would like to learn where in Ireland Daniel and family lived. The spelling of the surname in Wales includes the following: NIGHAN, NIGHEN, NEHEEN, NEIN, NYAN, and NEIHEEN. Any leads would be appreciated. Thanks, Joe Nihen Lansford, PA USA

Yes, Dennis, these 'overlap' registration districts can be a problem - if one finds a 'Joe Doe' in Kilmallock, Co.Limerick registration district, one has no way of knowing at the index information level whether he was born, died, or married in few E.R. Co.Cork townlands covered by Kilmallock registration District; likewise in the case of the Mitchelstown, Co.Cork registration district, one has no way, again, at the index level, if he was born, died or married in Co. Limerick. The solution to these anomalies is, of course, the expense of getting the FULL detail record to find that he was not born. died, or married in Co.Cork, but in Co.Limerick. I see no other solution to it. Fortunately the number of townlands of the other county in such overlapped registration districts is small. **** Reply to the LIST ONLY - Please ***** ***** Thanks for your consideration ***** Pádraig Mór, An Sean Gabhar ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dennis Ahern" <ahern@world.std.com> To: <irl-cork@rootsweb.com> Cc: <CountyCork-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, September 27, 2006 8:19 AM Subject: Re: Nellie SULLIVAN > > padraigogealagain@rogers.com advised: > >>Yes, go to the LDS Family History Centre nearest you, and check the >>records of civil births - Ireland for the years concerned. My search in Leitrim was done by Leitrim Genealogy Centre, Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim. I had the name of my ggrandfathers parents and knew that he was from Leitrim. It did cost me but it was well worth every penny. I also wrote to the Leitrim newspaper in Carrick-on-Shannon looking for info from anyone still alive who knew my family. I was really surprised when I received 3 letters from people who remembered my great uncle and his family. None of his family married and they all died in Ireland. I originally mailed this to CountyCork-D@rootsweb.com. Sorry for the repetition, but I intended it as a reply to the irl-cork@rootsweb.com discussion about the use of 'X' as a signature. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Irish literacy Date: Mon, 25 Sep 2006 17:11:58 -0400 From: David Collins <dfc.jr@earthlink.net> Reply-To: dfc.jr@earthlink.net Organization: self To: CountyCork-D@rootsweb.com When I first started my family history, I was surprised at the number of my Famine ancestors who were illiterate; virtually all of them were. The Irish Censuses from 1841 to, at least, 1901 provide some impressive statistics about the rates of Irish literacy. In 1841, 53% of all Irish people over the age of five could neither read nor write. The illiteracy rate for the Province of Connaught in 1841 was 72%. By 1901, the rate had dropped to 14% for all of Ireland and 21% for Connaught. After the introduction of Civil Registration in 1864, the Irish (English) began to keep track of those who signed marriage registers with an 'X'. The 1871 Census show that 37.5% of men and 45.2% of women used an 'X'. By 1901 those rates were down to 13.2% (men) and 10.7% (women). These numbers coincide fairly closely with the 1871 & 1901 Census figures for literacy. The Penal Laws, which were eventually abolished by the early part of the 19th century, were largely responsible for the illiteracy rates. The Hedge Schools were the Irish answer to the prohibition of 'popish education'. But the hunger for education among even the poorest Irish led to the establishment of the first system of national education in the English-speaking world in the early 1830s.
