    3. Hi I am helping out a friend with her family tree, we are trying to find a birth for a Richard Percy Best b abt 1882, age based on age at marriage, and his twin brother, Walter they were the sons of Thomas Henry Best and Martha Drummond - . According to family stories they were born in County Cork. Are there any sites I could go to and try and find their birth? Sometime during the early 1900s Richard emigrated to New Zealand where he married. Hoping someone may be able to assist. Veronica

    3. Chris There were a number of ways to get England/ Wales via boat prior to 1871 (your time frame). Have you looked for your GGF in the UK? This may be the key to finding info. The England & Wales Census were taken 51,61 & 71. Any marriage or birth would be recorded there. The UK records are good, Ireland is probably going to be the most difficult. I suggest doing some digging in UK, any info will help. 4 segments of my Irish roots: Cork to Wales(10-20yrs) to Pittsburgh, PA 1871, 1872 & 1874 & 1879 (all traveled from Liverpool to NY with a stop in Queenstown/Cobh. Best of luck. There are many good people on this list that can help you. 3. Hello John, I began with the seanruad.com website and searched County Roscommon for a place called Kilkeevan and found nothing. But I did find a parish "Kilgefin", which is probably the parish you want. I then went to the Griffiths, which took place shortly after 1845 and searched for a Steff in Kilgefin, again, no luck. Similarly, no Steff or Stiff listed anywhere in Roscommon, or in Cork, or indeed anywhere in Ireland, so that seems like a dead end. When I entered Steff into the FamilySearch pilot search, I did find her marriage which was registered in the Castlerea district. Found her husband's name in the IGI, but noted that these 2 sources are from different films, so wonder if you have checked both? The IGI gives #0101267; the pilot source is film #101241, Vol. 3, p. 331, "Digital GS number" (whatever that is) 4195887 and image number 00151. good luck! 3. Hi List, Would SKS on this list have access to the Parish Registers for Co Cork ? I am trying to establish the parents of Mary Anne Steff (could also be spelt STIFF) born in Cork sometime around 1828. The Australian State of Victoria has an 1870 record for the death of Mary Ann , which gives her age as about 40 ish, and also mentions she was born in Cork, but does not indicate the names of her parents. Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated. With best wishes from sunny Queensland ................ John Jackson.

    3. Veronica You can search the Irish civil registration index at the LDS site. http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start This will give references for BMD registrations and copies can then be ordered from www.groireland.ie I had a quick look at Count Cork and did not see any birth record for a Richard or Walter Best but there are records for a Thomas Best. You could also try adjoining counties. Hope this is of use Regards Clare ----- Original Message ----- From: "Veronica" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, March 11, 2009 11:18 AM Subject: Richard Best > Hi > > I am helping out a friend with her family tree, we are trying to find a > birth for a Richard Percy Best b abt 1882, age based on age at marriage, > and his twin brother, Walter they were the sons of Thomas Henry Best and > Martha Drummond - . I don't owned that book, but I just took out the Voices of the Irish Immigrant book from my local library, which is a compilation of ads in the Truth Teller, New York's first Catholic newspaper. It covers years 1825-1844 - same authors as the The Irish-American. If anyone wants me to lookup anything, just let me know. The BC database is at http://infowanted.bc.edu/ but as far as I know it is still a work in progress. There isn't any indication on the website as to what percentage of the ads have been indexed. So, if you search the database and do not find who you are looking for, that doesn't mean they are not in the series. The surest thing is to go and look in the index of each volume in hardbound, or get the CDROM from New England Historic & Genealogical Society.

"From October 1831 through October 1921, the Boston Pilot newspaper printed a "Missing Friends" column with advertisements from people looking for "lost" friends and relatives who had emigrated from Ireland to the United States. This extraordinary collection of 31,711 records is available here as a searchable online database, which contains a text record for each ad that appeared in the Pilot." Betsy
