    1. RE: Cemetery records held by Libraries?

    3. >Bohen is an unusual spelling. I do not recall seeing it before. See http://www.irelandoldnews.com/Cork/1846/MAR.html for a report in the Cork Examiner of 4 March 1846 of the amounts contributed to Daniel O'Connell's Repeal Fund for the year 1845 from the Parish of Mallow, reported, BTW, by my great-great-grandfather, John Ahern. In it you will see that one James Bohen contributed the sum of 3 shillings. As for where to look for burial records your best bet would be the journals of the Cork Historical & Archaeological Society. There you will find transcriptions of tombstones from various County Cork cemeteries. Many of these were done longf ago and the stones may no longer be readable but these transcriptions remain. You can peruse these at the Cork Corporation Library in Grand Parade. Also, I expect, in the County Library. See: http://www.xs4all.nl/~tbreen/Journals/Cork.html Journal of the Cork Historical & Archaeological Society for a partial listing of contents, showing for example, "Henchion, R.: The gravestone inscriptions of Co. Cork - XVI, 124-144" but you must seek elsewhere for a more comprehensive list of contents as many of these go way back.

    3. Hi Judie, Apologies for misspelling your name and sending to the wrong person. Thank you for your input very much appreciated. If I hadn't been in such a hurry I would have also added, to go back to original documents as we cannot rely entirely on transcriptions. We promote this strongly in NZ and if one can't look at the original, then ask for a photo copy of the record as if you just ask for a certificate it can be a transcribed one. We recognise little things on the original document that someone copying may think not important and difficult hand writing is something we can recognise if we have prior knowledge of the person we are seeking. So John, if you read this heed the good advice from us both. 2. Chris, Where in the US did James & Patrick emigrate to? Was it a typo when you stated that they emigrated from Queensland, Australia or did you mean Queenstown. The biggest emigration port 1860/1870 in the world was Liverpool, a lot of ships sailed from Liverpool and stopped off in Queenstown. As a rule of thumb most of the people who emigrated through Queenstown came from the southern counties in Ireland. 3. Hi I am interested in the name Hobart. The late Dr Ted Hobart lived near me. He died sometime in the 1990's. I think he was aged over 90. He was a widower without children. He was the 4th generation of medical men, that I know of, in his family in Cork. The medical line goes back to the 1820's. I have a miniature painting of Dr Sam Hobart dating from about 1830. Ted's mother was Edith Guest Lane. She was a first cousin of Sir Hugh Lane, the famous art collector etc who went down on the Lusitania in 1915. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Judith Sent: 12 March 2009 03:44 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Parish Records for Cork Hi Jenny, This record is actually for John Jackson, to whom I was replying. 3. Bohen is an unusual spelling. I do not recall seeing it before. I assume it a variant of Bowen. This name is long established in Tisaxon near Kinsale. In the 1880's 2 sibling Bowen's married 2 sibling Allen's from near Newcestown. Bohane is another variant. These Bowens seem to me to be of Irish Gaelic origin and not from Wales where the name is commonly found (Ap Owen/Bowen - son of Owen) Somehow I think you may not be able to locate cemetery records. I doubt if they were ever kept in that time. However keep trying -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of John Walton Sent: 12 March 2009 08:28 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Cemetery records held by Libraries? 3. Hi Brendan Thank you for clearing that up for me. When I posted the article I did meant to change that and must of slipped my mine. Sailed- LIverpool- Queenstown, Ireland. Then to New York. Joseph ( born 1868 settled in Camden, NJ area , where my grandfather and eventually father was born. Sad to say all my relatives that may of known something passed on, I have tried to connect with distant cousins with no response, guess they are uncomfortable responding with a stranger. My new thing ( last 10 years or so) when I attend viewings, weddings, funerals, I take a family sheet, with a stamped self addressed envelope, most of them do get returned with the information, that has helped some of my research along. Hopefully now I can narrow my search down to the Southern part, I have a gut feeling and have had that Cork was in my head, not really sure why so yesterday I subscribed to a few list hoping for some help or connections. 3. My relatives also immigrated through Cobh (Queenstown) via Liverpool but came from Kerry - Fitzgerald is very common in Kerry and in Cork. You could use the Griffiths Land Valuation taken in the mid 19th century to narrow the areas but it would probably have too many in both counties. If you know the McLaughlin's parents you might check and see if someone of that name is listed. Have you exhausted other sources i.e. obituaries - which might give you some clues. Don't ignore exploring siblings and other close relatives obits for clues also. Good luck! 2. Microfilm # 101241, is only the index film. Vol 3 tells you the correct film for the year. Each year used to have more than one film. Film # 0101267 is the civil registration for their marriage. The place of residences, ages, father's name is included. According to family stories they were born in County Cork. Are there any sites I could go to and try and find their birth? Sometime during the early 1900s Richard emigrated to New Zealand where he married. Hoping someone may be able to assist. Veronica

There are hundreds of parishes and not all records are extant due to the Four Courts fire in 1922, but there is hope! More soon, Judie, Victoria. P.S We have had some rain! It's wonderful! Hope you are not near the floods.
