    1. RE: " Irish Free State" Meaning
    2. Jack Crowley
    3. IFS is the former name of what now is known as the Republic Of Ireland. This comprises the 26 counties that left the United Kingdom in 1922. In any event it is unlikely that a Fitzgerald would have hailed from the 6 counties of Northern Ireland that remain in the UK. The name is found mostly in the southern counties -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Patricia O'Shea Sent: 18 March 2009 03:40 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: " Irish Free State" Meaning Hi Chris - as far as I understand this was the name for what is now the Republic of Ireland (Southern Ireland.) 3. I think I need to do more research. I wanted a Baptism on one of the girls or a marriage record. I have no idea where they were from in Cork. I was hoping since only 2 David Smith's showed up on Griffiths I might get lucky. This is my biggest brick wall. I so wish all of Cork had a heritage centre like Mallow. Thanks for the help. 3. In addition, if your family WAS from the diocese of Cloyne, there were many parishes where records were not kept as far back as 1825. If there is no marriage for David or for Johanna in the general time frame of 1825, chances are it doesn't exist. If you are not sure they were married in the Diocese of Cloyne, that is another story. If you know in what parish David and Johanna raised their family, you might want to keep in mind that couples were married in the bride's parish so they could have been married in a parish that was different from the one where they raised their family. Good luck! Jan

    3. The USA census had people distinguish between what we now call the Republic of Ireland, which they referred to as the Irish Free State, and northern Ireland. Unfortunately for you, that includes many counties. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chris Evans" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, March 17, 2009 8:35 PM Subject: " Irish Free State" Meaning > Would some kind soul let me know what this means? > > In the 1930 census my great uncle states " Father/ Mother- Irish Free > State- > Not sure if that would help to pin down area or not. > > Thank you all for your past help with my Fitzgerald's. > > > Chris

That's what is now the Republic of Ireland, as opposed to Northern Ireland (UK).

    3. Hi Helen - I would say 'yes' they are, Mallow is part of the IFHF network of Heritage Centres. As you may know, their records do not cover the whole of Co Cork so if your people were outside their coverage area then they won't show up on the Mallow/IFHF search site. Hope this is useful. 3. Dear list, Does anybody know if the pay per view records on the IFHF site are the same records that the Mallow Centre keeps? I am looking for a marriage in Cork -- David Smith, Johanna Dempsey circa 1825. I did not see any years that were the same when I searched for a marriage on the 2 names. I hate to have Mallow do a full blown search if it is the same data. I have very little information on them and did not want to use Eneclann until I can dig up a little more data. Thanks for any help. Helen

    3. Hi Chris - welcome to Irish research! Unfortunately very few Irish census records have survived - only statistical abstracts in some cases and a very few fragments of fuller information. There are no nationwide census records available until 1901 and 1911. Prior to that it is necessary to have a few clues on location and a good helping of Irish luck. There are many helpful websites and lots of helpful people on these lists. I had a quick look at the Irish Family History site but did not see any entries matching these. http://ifhf.brsgenealogy.com/ You can also search the Civil Registrations online at http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/#p=2;t=searchable;c=1408347 Click on Europe then scroll down to Ireland. As some of the children were born after 1864 you may be able to find something there. I checked the BIVR CDs but did not see any matching entries for your folk. I hope this gives you an idea of some of the resources which do exist - there are also a number of useful books on Irish research, including 'Tracing Your Irish Ancestors' by John Grenham. I believe that for US Irish it is a good idea to assemble as much information as possible from documents in America as that often provides the clue you need. Best wishes and keep asking questions!! 3. Hi all, Living in the USA not sure how your census are set up. I belong to Ancestry.com just not the world addition. I was wondering if some kind soul has access to census records in Ireland possibly between 1858 to 1873? My gggrandfather was born in 1868 Joseph Fitzgerald He had a twin Sarah . It is possible they are the children of James and Mary Fitzgerald. I am looking at a passenger list showing the following Sailed April 13, 1873- Queenstown to New York James - Age 45- Laborer Mary- Age 32 James age 15 Abty 1858 Richard age 4 Abt 1869 Mary about 1864 Joseph and Sarah about 1868. So it is possible they may appear on a census some time between 1858 ( Richard was born ) and 1873 when they left Ireland. I am trying to find where in Ireland they came from so I can then begin to close in on getting some information to expand my information on the Fitzgeralds. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Chris Fitzgerald- USA- New Jersey.
